Yo Virge, glad to see you really leaning into the UA-cam tutorials. Each and every one has been top-notch. It's absolutely some of the best coaching content on YT. Keep it up man.
You're so underrated! I try to share with all my lower ranked friends because you Express the thoughts of a player with such good wording; "range of possibilities" is something I always have trouble explaining to them but you do it with 3 words
Virge, you knock it out of the park again! Your insights and understanding of these tactics is masterful. Thanks for the good work and your contributions.
Dude I watched and still watch every month every single one of your tutorials and now I can recommend them to a friend that just started RL, just wanna send much love. Could you make a video on ceiling / backboard ? These are spaces that give a hard time to everyone below GC & I 'm sure GCs as well, how to save from there, how to counterattack ect... much love
I enjoy every bit of these vids and take it to heart. You're honestly a pretty cool dude to be giving out these tips for free especially at this level. So personally I want to thank you I feel like I've improved quite a bit since watching all the tips and coaching videos
Wow, this is really cool. For my whole RL lifetime, i’ve been defending by sitting at the goal like an idiot, and trying to save shots like that. I’m going to try this way of defending, since it seems much more efficient. Thank you.
@Virge I truly look forward to every video you post. There is something about the calmness of your voice that makes me feel like I can do it. Keep up the content man.
Awesome vid as always! Love that you went through the training pack a bit to give a better idea on how to defend. I hate trying them and then not knowing if I'm missing something on it
I took a few months break from RL because I didn't have a controller to play with. I went back and platinum became diamond and gold became platinum. Everyone's getting so good at this game, I kinda want some free to play fresh meat to balance things out.
Big brain gang! Super helpful vid, I've been working a bunch on shadowing and hadn't considered a few of your points (esp challenging). Have fun at RLCS!
Hey virge, thank you! Just got gc in the same day i watched this video and "how to challenge". Also i watched GarrettG's videos trying to pay atention in his rotation. *I got the reward btw
Really dig your videos, Virge! This one is definitely helpful, but it's also pretty conceptual and high level. One thing that would help make this video more practical/applicable for me would be if you went through a few different real-world examples for each concept you explained. This is especially important for the ones where you've noted that it's hard to explain and takes a lot of real-world practice to get good at it. An example would be when you introduced "range" at 0:47. In order for us to better understand what range is and how it works, it'd be great to see you then go through 2-3 examples of a player correctly assessing their opponent's range and how that helped them make the save, and then 2-3 examples of them misjudging the range and what happens as a result.
A big brain observation from Musty (or was it Kevpert?) with taking the exact same line: if you're in the same line as the ball, you have zero power to clear it left or right. Keep your corner-clear option open by staying to the side. Nice high density vid, thanks!
Hi Virge, because of your tutorials I managed to break out of silver and finally got into Gold. I hope to continue learning from your tutorials to progress rank wise, because you explain things very clear cut. Thanks!
Yeah honestly I agree mostly, but shadowing gets more complex the higher rank you get, so i wouldn't limit shadowing down to ''only 1 way to do it'' because, the higher rank you get there'll be WAY more things that your opponent can do to outplay you based on how you shadow. So just basic shadowing like that isn't the best strat for the GC 1s players :P But I would still say this is the basic grounds of how to shadow, and is an amazing guideline for majority of the playerbase :D
Yeah I don’t think many guides out there will cater to the higher level GC’s. Most of my content will be targeted at the majority of players who need the help to begin with :)
Also note that shadowing is used to buy time for your teammates, when you shadow in 2s/3s (only when your teammate is out of position, otherwise just challenge) your teammate will challenge as they get back, if you challenged instead of shadowing they might not be ready for whatever came out of that challenge.
Papa Virge I and I think a lot of other people would love a video talking about your progression through the rl ranks, maybe a chart showing rank over time and talking about how it was progressing. I’m currently champ 1- Champ 2 and I got C1 for the first time in August, so I feel like I’m stuck so it would be really nice to have someone to compare my progression too plus no one else has done it really
This video was so helpful, as I've improved the basic understanding of shadow defense I had became pretty beatable so it's nice to have a reminder and know how to improve #bigbraingang all the way
I feel like there could be a video on 12 routes? More in depth than the natural 3 but some of the more advanced routes that you barely get to see, 336 boost in 12s. Idk no one covers that and i feel its super important.
I really want a video on recovery , I know you can't really spell it out all , u got a coaching career but I really would appreciate a video from you on it 😘😘
*QUESTION* In all the replays here, The opponent flicks very early, giving an easy save. What if the opponent has full control of the ball, and will flick the moment you turn to challenge. If you don't challenge, they keep driving with the ball on their car, until you are past your own goal line (even tho you are still in the sweet spot, they are just really close to the goal) and then once your inside you're past the goal line, if you go to challenge they will flick it over you, and even if you somehow beat them on the high side, they can low 50 to score. Please explain how to defend this.
You should make a shadow defending 2, these are average speed shots to get an idea of how to save while shadowing but for higher level players there can be some banger close range flicks and some really good chips left or right at high speed along the ground. I'm not sure how to create these training packs but it's just an idea id like to see so I can get better at c3 level 1s.
I'm surprised you didn't cover what to do if the opponent is closer to your goal. In all your visual examples, the opponent is flicking from like 50-75% away from the goal. I rarely see this happen. What happens when they're right by your net? What do you do when you've run out of room to shadow safely? I need "Big Brain" answers and I need them fasttttt!
i’m 5 months late, but i’m hoping you still see this because i’m still not sure about it. In 2s and 3s, do you need to (or rather SHOULD you) shadow when you have teammates behind you in goal? In 3s it doesn’t matter as much because people rarely get a chance to dribble let alone defend a dribble, but in 2s dribbles are definitely a thing.
You should try and force the ball to your teammate whenever you have one behind you. Challenge low if it’s a dribble, challenge high if it’s an aerial. That forces the ball to your teammate in the safer and easier option, while you cut off the more threatening play
What’s should I do if they are in the “no shot zone” on my half of the field? Should I guide them to the corner? Should I go to goal? Should I get to the wall/curve to shadow from there?

Hi Virge, because of your tutorials I managed to break out of silver and finally got into Gold. I hope to continue learning from your tutorials to progress rank wise, because you explain things very clear cut. Thanks!

You can’t shadow in front of your net! If they are close you have to challenge or try to read their shot
