    I had already gotten the tin of 36 as a sketchbook set and I enjoyed them so much, I bought them a new pallette box. They are fun and bright and I never hesitate to use them up like I do with my Roman Szmals. I dislike having metallics in a set though. Once you get those mica chips in a water pot or a brush, every paint turns metallic. 😂😢😅😊

      Yeah, I give them their own brushes, water, and towel when I use them. They're the untrained puppies of the paint world.

      Nice to hear! Yes - I never really use metallics.

    What a lovely gift! I love Paul Rubens Mei Liang, as well as their professional paints. Some of my favorite supplies. That box set is wonderful.

    What a bright and breezy set 😍. Had to laugh cos I saw that u had painted my coffee jar in ur black sketchbook 👍

    I've liked using metallic and pearlized paints on top of dark, regular paints, even on white paper. The darker under layer of paint bolsters the shimmery paints the way black paper does but provides stronger color. Doing my holiday cards that way.

    I find myself going for my student grade paints like van gough and cotman and others less and less even though am mainly using sketchbooks. So much more enjoyable using professional wc instead of being so precious about them. The joy i get far outweighs the perceived wastage in a sketchbook.

    I just got this very same case earlier this week to use as a stamping platform for clear silicone stamps, & it works perfectly for that after I inserted a small grid cutting mat that I already had. Way cheaper than the stamping platforms out there plus has a storage compartment for stamps & ink pads!

    Even for student grade paints, I would want to know the pigments. These are so inert! That would definitely bother me. I'm sure this would be a fun set for an older child wanting lots of colors, but....a fair number of these look more like dye than pigment based paints which could account for the lack of information.
    If you mentioned this I missed it: was that cellulose paper? Because I guess to be fair, I'd be interested in whether the are more active on 100% cotton paper (as in, is the inertness from the paint? Or the paper?)

      @helencryer  Місяць тому +1

      The papers that came with the set are cotton, but the flower I painted was on cellulose. They're still very nice to work with, so I think they'd be enjoyable for people not too bothered about pigment info, and just want to get nice rich colours down.

    They seem expensive for what they are, I would rather wait for a sale on professional ones personally. Love this video though!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Місяць тому +2

      They work out at just over £1 a paint, which is obviously much cheaper than professional paints if someone was after lots of colours, but I agree with you - as I said in the video, my personal preference would be to buy far fewer professional paints for the same price.

    Question, was Paul Rubens a real person? I googled and Pee Wee Herman showed up since that’s his real name

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Місяць тому +1

      I assumed they are named after Peter Paul Rubens, the famous Flemish artist!

    They keep improving the packaging but the paints are crappy. At least with the new set up you can throw the pans away and use the cute tin.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Місяць тому

      I'm surprised you think so! I genuinely think they're good student grade paints. What don't you like about them?

      @@helencryer mine seem to dry either shiny or chalky, many are opaque and they don't layer nicely. I think there is a lot of binder in them. They don't move very well in water and there seems to be quite a large drying shift. I suppose they are priced accordingly, lots of colours for not very much dollars. I like the parrot on the tin.

    I don’t like metallics. I don’t like bright colors, I lean towards dark & earthy shades. I love granulation. So I won’t be getting these. To each her own.
