I have a question. If you sat down with me and said hey lets jam in B minor. How on earth would i know what chords to play? Is there some trick that I dont understand or would you just have to tell me all the chords you intend to play? Because if you said lets jam b minor and i said ok and started playing a 1-4-5 in b minor it wouldnt work with what youre playing here. So i hope my question makes sense because not understanding how people sit down and jam anything other than pre established patterns is really frustrating me.

I’m no expert, but I’m my novice mind, this is a 1-7-3-6 verse progression. If somebody asks you to jam in B minor, one of you will be rhythm and one will be lead. It’s the rhythms job to come up with the progression. Your job as lead would be to jam over that and if you stay in the key of B minor it should sound okay.

@beck204 I'm not sure you understood my question fully. Let me phrase it differently. This 1736 prog is the jam. Im soloing. How would i know initially what the chord changes are? If i wanted to solo and go through the chords i would have to play general b minor until the progression had looped a time or 2. Right? If i haven't been told prior that its 1736.

@@WickedJester77 I see. I feel like what you’re describing is advanced. I asked a similar question on Reddit and people kept telling me about chord tones: ua-cam.com/video/NmLmJIEXTQo/v-deo.htmlsi=vOxvYqBWaHVyvxHu

Circle of 5ths chart will help you get started in the right direction.

@@TFShaw how does the circle of 5ths help me predict a random jam partners chord progression? They could play 1356. 1267. 1276. The 5ths chart would not tell me which they have chosen in their head. Honestly im certain im not missing anything now. The person would have to be specific. Thats the answer.
