I play with 2000 TaylorMade SuperSteel irons and matching 1,3,5 woods. Bubble shafts. Bought them new. Still in Perfect condition. Hard as hell to control with a crap swing. Not buying new clubs until my game improves. Still loving them!
Clubs of that era force you to have solid fundamentals and to play the whole game of golf because you can't just hit your way over trouble. Great job and so much fun to watch!
Once a year a buddy and I go out and play a 'Vintage Round' with old clubs. I always play persimmon woods and rotate through my '79 Apex Cameo's, '88 Apex Redlines and my newest set that I'll play next time are the original '72 Apex's
I enjoyed this so much, I started golf 6 weeks ago and most of my clubs are about the same age. I have the bubble too and it’s nice to see someone smashing it cause it has a unique sound. It’s so fun to play with old clubs and keep up with all the new tech out there.
LOL, I was alive way before all of those clubs. I started playing with a set of Maxfli blades from 1969, and had a Persimmon driver. You did a good job with them. Next time try a balata ball like we used to play with. Its always great having Kelly along for the conversation.
I started playing in 1982, and clubs like these were regarded as amazing technology. Try playing a round with some balls of the era, they are critical to getting the feel. Wooden headed driver and a balata ball, if you've never heard what that sounds and feels like, you're missing something very special that today's wonderful modern clubs cannot replicate.
"Damn I got some stank on that" Nailed it....too funny. I started playing golf in 1994. I bought my entire golf bag (clubs, golf balls, tees, gloves, ball markers, including shoes for $60.00 at a play it again shop. I had an original set of Sam Snead Irons and woods. I also had an original wilson bullseye putter. I took lessons to learn how to play gold and my instructor said to me "you should not be able to hit your seven iron 155 yards." I said to him,"that is only because I have a good instructor who taught me the right way to swing." Yes, the woods were all woods not metal...the farthest I ever hit the driver was 245 yards...Using these blade type clubs has only helped me later on. I do not get a lot of time to play golf although I hold a USGA index of 15.
How do some of the youngster's say, "That's my Jam". I own 2019 Callaway Apex's. But, I play with irons from 1960 to 1980 vintage, and My driver is a 1964 Wilson Staff 4350 "strata bloc". Some of these clubs are as old or older than me. I am ancient, 60, 😂, at least compared to most of your viewers. I have shot in the mid-seventies at my home course (where I live and work) and at another public course that is pretty nice and moderately challenging with these old sticks...so much fun! Great video, Sir!
I remember getting a Burner Bubble 2 in 1997 or 1998 and feeling like I was driving a Ferrari (I was ~17 years old at the time). I recall a lot was made of the shaft technology and the received wisdom was to "let the shaft do the work" (i.e. don't swing too hard). Well, younger me didn't want to hear that and I never quite got the hang of the club. So I ditched the Burner and used a Big Bertha knock-off with a stiff steel shaft for many years. Incidentally, I uncovered that old beat up Bertha-esque driver and hit it better and further than any of my newer ones. If you can consistently strike a golf ball (as you clearly can), a properly fit club in good working order made in the last 30 years is likely to perform more than adequately for most amateurs. So many good second hand classics to choose from out there.
Andrew, from one of your older videos on the mental side of the game I used the "stay right here" thought in a tournament. I made a triple on the 11th hole and what you said kept me in the tournament. I finished solo 5th (top 6 paid) and only lost by 3. I owe it to that "stay right here" thought.
I still play my old Cleveland Launcher 15 and 22 degrees, the ones with the gold shaft. Can't remember when they came out (over 10 years ago), but I love these clubs. I have tried to use newer ones for the new "tech" but I just hit these so good that I can't take them out of the bag. Especially the 22 degree, from the tee or fairway, that club is so easy to hit
I play a mixed bag, modern woods but 70's and 80's blades and an 80's Ping putter. I missed a few years between then and now but grew up on the old stuff, but I never swung a wooden driver or wood after Taylormade came out with "Pittsburgh Persimmon". I played their Tour Burner (off the deck sometimes) and a TM Spoon (driver length with #2 loft-is how I recall that club) and their 4-wood. A little testing before tee time with those and you might well have scored a shot or two better. Nice putts too with such primitive iron.
Not yet born in 1995?!? Yipes. I started playing 30 years before that! The oldest clubs I ever played was a set of MacGregor woods (1, 3, 4) borrowed from a tour pro who had them made for him in 1960. That was in 1968 or so. Nice clubs. Used to be able to hit that driver off the deck.
Really enjoyed the video, brought back old times. I'm 65, don't do Instagram and bought most of those clubs when they were new. I remember when TaylorMade introduced Hi-TECH, HOLLOW, FOAM filled BLADES (the set you got from Kelly's dad had hollow 1-4 irons) and NOBODY (but me) WANTED THEM! They then tried HOLLOW, FOAM FILLED CAVITY BACKS before caving and selling BORING 1 piece cast cavity backs to an uneducated public (like everyone else).
OMG I remember that Burner Bubble.... we all wanted one, it was so high tech back then. Dont remember those irons as I rocked the Top Flite Magna’s. Great vid team...
My dad gave me his old Spalding Ultimate set of irons from the 70's a few months ago. They are in mint condition and I'm planning to play a round with them next year. I still have a few old real "woods" too. My son is pretty stoked about trying them. I love these videos as they prove that a good swing is more important than the clubs. Sure club technology helps but you have to have a good consistent swing to score well. Forgot to mention, I think you found your new putter - lol.
Personally golf with a set a lot like this, a garage sale find with a myriad of makes in it with an old leather bag that weighs a ton. Still, the old things shoot straight and play well, so I'm happy and intend to keep 'em. Would like to get a set of hickory clubs though, go even more old-school.
Oldest club I've hit that is still in my collection would have to be the mid 1980's Power Pod Driver. My daily set for like 10 years was a set of Adams Ties Lies irons from 2002, 2 Callaway Steelhead III woods from 2002, and the square Nike Sumo SQ from 2007. Just swapped that set out 2 years ago.
I used to use a driver from the 1940s a few years back . It had the imitation wood look steel shaft. I stripped the wooden head back and gave it a clear gloss finish. I could out drive all my playing partners with it. It cost me $5.00 from a thrift store.
I had the Tour Spoon in my bag in the 80s during my junior golf days in Ontario ha! We had a good crew of juniors back then -- Morland, Weir and Little (who was on the bag for Gary Woodland at the US Open this year) -- also Marty Chuck -- and then Sean Foley a couple years back of us all - they've all done ok I think! Nice vid you two!
I simplify shit when i use old or crappy clubs. I remember hitting like 12/14 fairways one round with my buddy's hickory driver and was mashing that thing about the distance of my regular 3 wood all day. Good work sir
I actually still use some of my old golf clubs the oldest golf clubs I have is 1995 Tayormade bubble Burner and Cleveland vas I really enjoy using them I enjoy all of my golf clubs great job on under 1 on golf today
Heyyy I need your help!! My aunt gave me her mizuno silver cup ladies full set and how much should I sell it? Or should we just keep it and try golfing lol or keep it for display? It’s good as new (used 1-3 times) and it’s woods clubs are really made of wood lol (persimmon I think)
I assume before watching the clubs will be less forgiving but I am sure you'll be able to handle it!! I think you will get it around par!! I was definitely alive when those clubs were made but I first started playing golf around '90 when 15!!
Great video. So is your conclusion that those clubs hit a little shorter in how far they fly (they are physically shorter) & more importantly, much less forgiving?
If you play blades today, it shouldn’t be that much different. That said, modern clubs have their lofts and lies tweaked. At the end of the day, it’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian.
Just take whatever driver you use rn. Throw it out. And grab a Callaway big Bertha because it will add at least 10 yards to your drive no matter what driver you're using now 😂
Why does everyone think older clubs that are not made of plastic, glue and Chinese metal are hard to hit. I am playing now with 1955 Mac Gregor Colokrom Tourney iron and 1950s Persimmon Eye o Matic woods. The 8 iron has a 44 degree loft, about the same a modern pitching wedge. That is why you need so many wedges with a modern set. The lofts are so low you get that warm and fuzzy feeling you hit a 5 iron 200 yards when it is really a 3 iron.
Just goes to show....if you're a player you can play with anything. I have the original Odyssey White Hot putter my wife bought me when we were dating 22 years ago. She couldn't believe it was so expensive.😀
I play with a 1974 Walter Hagen 305 set of irons. I will switch it up with a 1973 Mcgreger Tourney irons. Some times I will drive with Wilson persimmons. I really like The Knight KJS driver or the Knight Devistator 425 Driver. I am 47 yo.

try a set of second hand 1978 Wilson Staff tour blades before you purchase new clubs.
Those babies were solid..
And this, boys and girls, is why Jack is still the GOAT!
Why exactly? I dont understand your comment
So is it technology or genuine skill that makes one successful?
Why does your ball keep showing up on the edge of a fresh divot?
