    Yay! Cake mascara!
    Also, chemical names are much easier to say when sung to the tune of The Irish Washerwoman. That tip actually came from a famous scientist (can remember the book, not the name alas), so I can't take credit, but it really helps!

    I'm a zero waste believer so I love this idea of making your own mascara. BTW, I actually discovered that if you let those mascara boo boos completely dry, then use a dry Q-Tip to flake it off, no mess no smear or having to reapply makeup. 😀

    There is a soviet cake mascara (still being sold nowadays) that contains soap as an ingridient and now I know why! It also has soot as a pigment

      It was famous for causing severe irritation if you got it into your eyes. "I'm not crying, I've got mascara in my eyes" wasn't an uncommon phrase during times it used to be popular.

    Such fun the way you present all the historical info as well as your "cake mascara journey"! I sure hope there's more coming. ☺️
    As for pronouncing the long form of TEA, my grandma taught me long ago if there's a long and difficult word, it helps to break it down into smaller chunks. So, "tri(like the word 'try')-etha-nola-mine" (with the heaviest stress on "nola"!
    And isn't it curious that at 9:32 the historical cake mascara recipe is immediately followed by...advice on "Purchasing a Business"?! 😅Historical stuff can be so interesting and unpredictable.
    Oh, speaking of adding preservatives to the mascara to prevent eye infections... I've read that some women would spit (!) on their cake mascara to create the paste instead of adding water. Not.recommended!

    • @motherof3pearls
      @motherof3pearls 8 місяців тому

      Yes, I remember people use to do that back in the day, I though that they spit on the wand because it was the best way to rewet mascara when it started to dry out. Perhaps spit was better than adding water! 🤷🏾‍♀️🙂

    I think women back in the day wore those large brimmed hats to hide any beautifying measures they tried to take. Mascara is hard to make! My mother used to use the cake type when she was young. ( Or maybe they only had that kind back then) Interesting video.

    I just found you! I’m excited too try this cake mascara. Where did you get the tins, and brushes? Do you wash out the brush after every use to keep the mascara from becoming contaminated?

    I didn't know the FDA regulated in Canada too .

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  2 роки тому +4

      I probably phrased that poorly. I meant it's banned in the US by the FDA, however many of the Canadian guidelines on cosmetics are very similar to those in the States. Often if it's banned by the FDA you can't get it in Canada either.

    • @deltaflute03
      @deltaflute03 2 роки тому +4

      Canada and the US share a strong relationship. Even though Canada has its own safety regulator (Health Canada), because of NAFTA and other trade relations, the FDA and Health Canada tend to work together. This happens quite a bit across multiple governmental agencies. The USDA has a strong relationship with its Canadian counterpart, and products with a USDA organic certification are accepted in the Canadian market. NASA also works alongside CSA. It's a bit wild to realize that the US and Canada work close together. So if it's not FDA approved, it's highly unlikely that it's not Health Canada approved. Though there are exceptions to regulations between the two countries being identical. Kinder Eggs is a very famous one.

    I am SOOO excited to have discovered your channel! Subbed immediately, of course! I do have a question for you, if I may; How shelf stable are the liquid components (other than the preservative, duh -lol). I don't imagine I would need to use the individual products too often. Should they be kept in the fridge/freezer? If so, for how long? Thank you so much!

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  Рік тому +1

      It will vary but most of these supplies should last 1-2 years without issue (and longer for the powders). Distilled water is quite shelf stable and should be fine without refrigeration. If I remember correctly the only other liquid in here is the jojoba oil, which should also last quite a while and won't need refrigeration. Sometimes you see jojoba oil with added vitamin E oil, which will have an even longer shelf as the vitamin E oil helps delay the oil becoming rancid. Hope that helps!

    My go-to is letting the mascara spots dry down completely and then take the dry swab, place it perpendicular and spin it or rub it. The least messy method.

    May I ask what would be the shelf life of the cake mascara?
    I use only cake mascaras and would love to make my own 😊

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! 😊
      It's difficult to give an exact shelf-life as so many factors can affect shelf-life (including climate, the age of the ingredients, cleanliness of your containers, etc). What I can say is that if cake mascara is allowed to dry out properly between uses, due to it's lower water content, it typically has a shelf-life longer than "regular" mascaras. I've been using the same batch for over a year without issues, but someone who uses it more regularly may have it "go off" more quickly due to the extra water.

    So great thanks! I followed this recipe and my mascara was gloopy and didn't set. Perhaps too much water?

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  2 роки тому +1

      Hmmm.. is it still gloopy 24 hours later? Sometimes it takes a while to set and you do want to leave the lid off while it cools to prevent any condensation. If it's gloopy but of an even consistency, it sounds like too much water. In that case, often leaving the lid off for a couple days will dry it out to a better "cake" texture. If it's gloopy but lumpy and separated, than it sounds like it didn't emulsify properly. Sometimes remelting will help or it may be an issue with the emulsifying wax used.

    When I was young I used to trim my lower lashes because I thought they were too long. Silly me. I want them back! This was the early 80s btw. We were ignorant 😂

      I actually used to do that too! (circa 2012ish), but I used nail clippers so I would poke my eye out accidentally. I actually still stand by that choice, it looked good and kept them from spinning around and poking me in the eye.

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper

      It might but you would have to play around with the ratios as it typically affects the thickness of products differently than BTMS-50.

    People today still think that cutting or shaving your hair makes it grow back faster (it doesn't) so I think that's why they suggested trimming it.

      The first commercial mascara was made around that time, but there were people using their own concoctions to create a mascara-like effect slightly earlier than that.

      I wasn't throwing shade. Kohl products are often contaminated with lead, hence why they are illegal to sell in some countries.
