This song is sounds much sadder than the original... but upon seeing the music video, I feel like a better interpretation of it is that this is someone who is still hurting but is getting over it. These friends are all together, they're happy and smiling. The feelings that one of them felt for a girl are fading away, melting away somberly, bitterly... And so the tempo is lowered to reflect the degrading state of these feelings...
Well that's what I'd like it to be anyways..
I feel like this version of the song is kinda the perspective of the jailbird who murdered his gf; but this video is about them having fun and making something again, but was also originally intended to be like a tribute to their band and a goodbye

I went to the store one day on the hunt for a honey scented candle that was long and thin like a stick. I lit it up and blew it out in a dramatic way in front of my roommate and said "my honey stick went out like a light." she looked up paused for a second closed her eyes and let our her quiet little laugh. Now whenever our honey candle runs out she goes to get more.

This song makes me think about back when I lived at my childhood home. We had this older couple that lived next door. The kind of honest hard workin folks that kept their yard perfectly manicured, that had been there since the neighborhood was first built in the late 80s. They'd watched the family that grew up in the house I did before we were there and they'd watched me grow up. From the time I was 5 I'd go over there and sit with Susanne out on the front wrap around porch in the late afternoon and just listen to her talkin about the people she'd know. I went over there for the first time in years a few weeks ago and there she was out there on the porch as though not a day had passed. Her husband is gone now but she still just carries on her old routine as best she can.
