- SW-401 Light Flux and SW-402 Dark Flux are mid-range glazes that were developed to be used in combination with other mid-range glazes to produce flowing effects. Designed to fire to cone 5/6, but can be fired to cone 9/10 (movement will be more pronounced at higher temperatures). In this video we deep dive into Flux and how to use it. Find more information here: www.maycocolors.com/color/fir...

Do you have a video of the four finished tiles?
It would be really helpful if in your product info videos if you showed sample tile with light flux under a dark matt, and a light Matt, under a dark crystal and light crystal, under a dark regular stone ware and light sto eware and then all the same but flux overtop instead of under. Having 2 or 3 colours plus a Stoke and coat etc isn't super clear in what I am seeing. Showing some cool multiple combination is nice to see too but I would love to better underand the difference between it over and under on different types.
some of stoneware product color pages have those tiles you are talking about. We are working on making them for all of the colors, but a good amount have them at the moment.
I really liked the reaction you get when you apply the light flux underneath the under glaze colors. My question is how heavily do you apply the flux? I heard you say blobbed on the piece. So do you just touch the pieces lightly or do you brush it on the piece?
Are you referring any of these projects in regard to the underglaze color and flux? There are no underglazed used on this project so we want to be sure you are understanding it correctly! As far as the flux application goes, we fully load the brush and then plop it onto the piece simply by making contact with it. We are not applying it with brush strokes in this particular application.
Do you have any videos where your making the one with raspberry mist, was hoping to see how you applied the Car ibean under glaze and light and dark flux. (I tried this and the top worked as in the pic but the lower part wasn’t smooth had some pirocity (pin holes and used 3 layers of raspberry mist. I’m think too thick because I’m pretty sure the inside of the vase top didn’t have as many. But was curious how you received the long running lines, not sure of the amount of flux or if you brushed it on, or used the the bottled tips to do bead lines etc. I was hoping to find the same for the last on with Macadamian on it. Would be neat to see how they are applied dry. (Tied the link to the instragram and still requires me to have an account etc (FYI thanks for the help, I did find the one you linked on Facebook).
The Raspberry mist can have surface texture if it is applied thick. So that makes sense on the bottom section of the vase. We are always sure to pull the coats out all of the way with that color since we really tend to slap the glaze one. We do have videos of the other 2 and can link the Facebook links for you! Sorry we made those before we had a real system gor creating our UA-cam videos. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156993707722986&id=204801867985

My flux is too thick, almost solid. Can I add water? Thanks.
I have used Light Flux and fired to cone 6 and it was lovely. I want to use it on cone 5 clay. Will it run less at that cone?
Slightly less.
Also how do you use a kiln brick? What kind of kiln brick? The air bricks? Do you put kiln wash on the brick?
We use extra kiln bricks as a barrier between the piece and the shelf on projects that we know will have some movement. So anything that will sit flat, for use that is the brick that you would use to build the inside wall of a kiln where the elements go. You can put kiln wash on them, but it is not necessary. If kiln bricks are not accessible to you, using a tile or some other sacrificial barrier would work. The point is basically to conserve the shelves.
How do Mayco glazes perform on glass, do they need to be capped?
We typically only recommend using our Designer Liners on glass. Most of our glazes need to be fired hotter than glass to mature.
Do you always dry foot with Flux? Can Flux br used with low fire or is the cascade for that?
Typically stoneware items are dry footed. Flux is a stoneware product, but you are correct, Cascades is a similar product for low-fire.
Question: I have a finished porcelain vase with red gold over light shino. I didn't get the effects I wanted and I want to try flux. I'm wondering if I can apply flux over the top, maybe 1/3, and refire (cone 6 oxidation). Thanks for your video! Very helpful!
That shouldn't be a probelm!
Wow interesting!
I had the same problem.
@@MaycoColors I will try to do that also.
Did you use any other glaze with the tea dust and light flux? I thought you said some stroke and coat but not the color. Tried to find it on your you tube channel no luck and I don’t have instragram so any help would be awesome.
Jaded is the Stroke and Coat used on that project! Here is a link to the instagram and Facebook post, which you should be able to view even without an account! Please let us know if there is any other way that we can be of assistance.

Awesome thank you, I did try the tea dust with the light flux and it turned out really neat also. But definitely going to get some of the stroke and coat.
It’s just called jaded correct (where I’m looking there is a bunch of jaded (mix of colors).
SC-9 Jaded is the Stroke and Coat color used on the Tea Dust vase.
i don't see the end result of the tile test on the video, tried to replay several times but no luck, am i doing something wrong?
You can find the light and dark flux results here: www.maycocolors.com/product/sw-173-amber-quartz/
Can you use flux on earthenware...or do you needxa higher temperature for it to run?
Flux is for cone 5 and higher. We suggest using our Pottery Cascades for earthenware. Pottery Cascades is the low fire version of Flux.
How do you know the mobility of all your glazes?
With test tiles!
@@MaycoColors is there a chart that lists the fluidity of each color?
@@Ladonnacontenta Here is a more informative and updated brochure that lists the fluidity and performance of each color. www.maycocolors.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/UsingMaycoStonewareGlazes_2020.pdf
For the vase with macadamia, norse Blue, lavender mist and both fluxes, did you put on the double application of blobs (of the latter 4) first and then apply 2 coats of macadamia? And did you put the second blobs on top of the same colors as the first blobs? Thanks! - Lynn
Here is a video tutorial to see how it was done! The Macadamia was applied first and everything else on top. facebook.com/MaycoPotters/videos/pcb.968225693556103/10156993696712986
Can you use flux with Jungle Gems- what will the result be?
You can but they will run even more than they already would at cone 6. Be aware of movement when applying.
Did you post the results of the flux samples?
Yes, they are on our Facebook (Mayco Mud Room) and Instagram (maycocolors).
@@MaycoColors could you include a link please. There are hundreds of photos on the Mayco Facebook. Next time maybe hold off and put them in your vid or better yet, as a resource on the Mayco website. Many don't participate in Facebook/Instagram. thanks.
@@kennethdante of course, here are the facebook links to the vases and the tiles. We will be sure to add them to the description!

@@MaycoColors super thank you so much.
What colors of stroke n coat did you use on the bowl and the other one you mentioned you used it on?
SC-9 Jaded was on the bowl. There are project instructions for that here: www.maycocolors.com/projects/copper-jade-bowl/
And on the pink vase, we used SC-76 Cara-bein Blue
Thank you!
Can you add to a glaze?
We recommed layering Flux with other glaze, but if you would like to mix it in you will want to do some test tiles!
What cone fire is it
Cone 6-10
Hi, what kind of clay do you use?
These pieces are all cast with a white stoneware body.
@@MaycoColors where can I buy this?
@@MrsKrolik111 most clay companies will have white stoneware bodies available.
@@MaycoColors in Poland you can hardly buy such white clay, we only have porcelain.
What do you mean by “trailer?”
The glaze trailer, like a slip trailer or a bottle with a writer tip used to trail the glaze.
Don’t you sell low fire flux?
We do manufacture a low fire mobility product called Pottery Cascades.
@@MaycoColors Thank you!!
What does mobility mean in this context?
Movement or flow.
Do you have a video of the four finished tiles?
Oh please! Stop being so logical 😂 - isn’t it frustrating that so many videos on glazing don’t show you the fired result, it’s mind boggling really! And even more frustrating when they promise to post the results ‘later’ and then don’t.
