Handlebar mounted displays tend to crack lcd a bit too easily. I like the idea of a $100-$200 rugged (or just old/spare) phone for use as display. But a phone in back pocket is less likely to break because most bike falls are tip overs, and falling on your back is extremely rare. I agree that there is significant appeal to phone UI. It won't save much money if bluetooth+ a fancier button UI (perhaps with small display and USB port) is added to system.
