He also started in 1603 because he already did videos on England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland up to this point.
Yeah, he doesnt like numbering his videos even if it would fit. Did the same with his Ancient Rome series.
Also, it was with the united crown that there really was a "Britain" - though the full union didn't come about until 1707.
You know how MESSED UP the British Empire's history is when you need not one, but 2 videos to make a SUMMARY of it.
@@fandomcake5158 Scotland, Ireland, England, and wales are seperate videos
My overly sarcastic comment as a Welshman would be, I love to see my country greyed out and ignored as if it doesn’t exist.
A request/bit of feedback: I realized I've been watching your reaction videos less often, and it hit me today that it's been an unconscious behavior shift due to the inconvenience of having to turn the volume up and down throughout. If I turn it up enough to understand the presented video, then I have to turn it down when you speak because your voice ends up being so loud. I have some auditory processing issues so I generally keep things within a pretty narrow range because if it's too quiet then I can't parse the words, and if it's too loud I can't integrate the audio very well due to the overstimulation. (I don't remember if this has applied during all of your react videos, but I think among those I've seen it's applied to at least most if not all.)
I really don't know anything about video/audio production so I understand if there are reasons you maybe can't adjust it, but if possible, it would be awesome if you could equalize (idk if that's even the word lol) these videos more evenly so that people like me can listen more consistently without constant volume adjustment, it would be really really helpful!
I second this
@@taelorhill9476 Hey thanks for the support and also for bringing my attention back to this comment, didn't expect it to get so much like-agreement. I'm glad to know it's not just me, often it's hard to tell what sensory experiences of mine are relatively normal or because of my weird brain lol
Oh no you're not the only one here. It is sometimes kinda annoying yeah.
British History starts when queen Elizabeth I died and King James VI of Scotland united the throne of England and Scotland in 1603 to become King James I of England aswell. Anything before is ununified and henceforth history is split into the different countries.
Your explanation on the 7 years war is exactly how I feel. I've always said that there were more than 2 world wars, with the first being the 7 years war, and then the Napoleonic wars as well.
I also love pointing out the fact that the 7 years war bankrupted France, to the point that the Royals were living lavishly while the peasants were well... ya know. And that led to the French revolution, which basically started modern politics (with the left and right divide, etc.)
Napoleonic Wars is not a world war, it was more like European war.
@@АлексейТабаков-ы8в Considering how it spanned over to the Americas with the Lousianna purchase + British and French and Spanish colonies there too + in Africa with their colonies also fighting one another + in Asia in terms of trade, I'd say it was a world war
@@АлексейТабаков-ы8в id say a world war is any war that spans mulitple countries and involves multiple countries, a european war could still be a world war
@@theaces3697 I’d be inclined to disagree, it’s a World War the first and second fought in all of China, northern Australian, Deep into Siberia, All of Europe, up and down Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, and the pacific islands. The only continents not involved is Antarctica and South America, do you have any idea how many wars span multiple countries?? Technically even a normal war has two or more countries so that would just be every war, EVER.
A World War is a war that is fought on several continents, not countries.
@@theaces3697a large portion of europe =/= the world. A world war has to involve multiple parties on multiple continents anything else no matter the severity is a regional conflict.
You need to watch The Pub Landlord videos on all this. Good fun.
Sup Mr Terry, if you want another OSP video to watch i really reccomend blye's video on Ethiopia
Also the series on the Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantium is top notch.
All of OSP's shit is great. The video on Poland from a few months ago is amazing

18:40 Many people don't know this or forget, but the Suez Canal was actually built by a French engineer and businessman, Ferdinand de Lesseps, though the Suez Canal Company ran on Anglo-French capital. Lesseps later tried his hand at building the Panama Canal, but terrain difficulties and epidemics led to the abandonment of the project in favor of the US.
19:10 There was also a similar French project for a trans-Sahara railway, linking North Africa to West Africa. Interesting how similar British and French objectives were during this time.
On an even smaller scale, there was also a sub-Saharan plan the Portuguese had to unite their two colonies of Mozambique and Angola. However, the British forced them to back down and claimed the in-between region for themselves.
The suez canal was dug out and the infrastructure built by a single french guy?! That guy must’ve been super mega jacked!!
"Hey King George, what is the opposite of tea? Yeet!" omg I love it xD even more because in German Tea is Tee, so Yeet is actually tea backwards xD with a Y but who cares xD
Phonetically, the vowel sound in "tea" is a diphthong in English (very subtle, though), so it *does* sound a bit like "teey". That's why the joke works so well.
As the imperator said, if you wanted to see earlier British history from them he has separate videos for those.
Love Overly Sarcastic. Mainly because he’s a millennial and I don’t know a lot of millennial history lovers like myself but also because he doesn’t sugarcoat stuff.

Could have mentioned Britain's role in ending slavery.
yeah that was a pretty big thing to miss out

Except...slavery hasn't ended yet. It's still exists.

In New York you can still see some traces of the Dutch. For example, 'Harlem' is named after the Dutch town Haarlem and 'Wall street' was 'Wallstraat', a common Dutch streetname in ports.
From Eddie Izzard:
After the 2nd World War, the world went:
"Alright, now give all these countries back."
"Right."
"Brittain, what is that behind your back?"
"Oh, just India and a number of other countries..."
BRITISH history starts when James takes the crown. England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, etc had their own histories from ????-1602
England should return to being separate kingdoms again so I can raise an army and reclaim northumbria in the name of Odin/Woden/Wotan
Do you mean Britain should become separate Kingdoms again?
@@valeskatkda well the Republic of Ireland are already separated from the United Kingdom, but yes Northern Ireland and Scotland should also have their independence, Wales I couldnt care less about tbh
@@BlackNRedBiker why don’t you care about Wales?
@@valeskatkda aside from the Welsh being nice people the countries quite irrelevant
Nah mate, Northumbria is St. Bede the Venerable's country pal, North Tyne, Unconquered (Surprisingly for a very Christian area). If you say Northumbria to the average brit, they'll think of Northumberland, which by today's borders wasn't touched by the Vikings outside of coastal raids at Lindisfarne and a couple surprise victories over raiders at Bebbanburg (Bamburgh now)
The number of European colonies that *didn't* dissolve into civil war following independence can be easily counted on one hand. I can only think of Australia, New Zealand and Canada, myself, and the circumstances were rather different in those cases. Even America, though their civil war didn't stem from independence. And took what? 75 years after independence?
Not only because of borders, but often because, before colonisation, there was already civil war. Both sides come together to fight the common enemy, but as soon as they're gone, the old grievances flare up.
Even in fiction. Look at the Bajorans from Star Trek DS9. As soon as the Cardassians left Bajor, all the old factions started fighting again, almost immediately.

even old new york was once new amsterdam....
Why they changed it, I can't say...
@@OrochiSaffron That's nobody's business but the Yanks...?
@@OrochiSaffron It was changed when the British took it from the Dutch in 1664.
@@SRosenberg203 but why did they change the name? And why name it "New York" after a very insignificant city of "York" ? Why not "New London" like how the Dutch named it after their capital city?
@@lobstered_blue-lobster Lmao, York is not an "insignificant city". It's one of the most important cities in England, and an archdiocese by itself.
King Lebron James I did indeed dunk on those Irish.

Love a bit of history. Was probably my favourite subject in school. Although, didn’t know too much of the American/ Dutch side of things within the British Empire such as New York originally being New Amsterdam. Guess my English History classes didn’t focus too much on American history. Although I did knowabout Triangular Trades and a bit W the very basics of the War of Independence.
In my school district, they did teach us that New York started out as a Dutch colony as part of our state history. But only in grade school in like 2nd or 3rd grade, after that history focused on the US as a whole in almost every grade after.
Yes, not talking about the early Britons because he's talking about Britain, as in Great Britain, not Britannia.
The show/book series Outlander talks about the pro Stuart Jacobite uprisings for the first three books as their main plot line/source material it’s a historical fantasy romance about a royal army nurse from ww2 who travels back in time from a stone circle similar to stone henge in a remote village in Scotland.
Investing in crypto now should be in every wise individuals list. In some months time you'll be ecstatic with the decision you made today.
The reality of the rich and the poor is this: the rich invest their money and spend what is left. The poor spend their money and invest what is left
Interesting, most people don't understand the market moves and tend to be mislead in facts like this and always depend on Money in the Bank very bad idea
It's nice to hear people discuss about investment, because investment always beat cash

Wonder why they used John Johnson instead of Guy Fawkes?
John Johnson was Guy Fawkes's alias. Ever since their video on failed assassinations (the first video where Fawkes was mentioned), they've been using John Johnson to make fun of how dumb of an alias it was.
@@gguy3600 oh, I see. Yes, I rather thought so too. I did know it was his alias - that's why I asked - but it looks like an inside joke, so no wonder I was confused.
This video could get people confused with you mentioning Henry VIII as he reigned in the first half of the 1500's and the video starts in the 1600's...

23:35 And we still see the effects of this today. Drawing nonsense lines that have nothing to do with ethnicity is probably a main cause of the neverending strife in Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Heck, even within China.
Enjoying your videos. I would love to see you react to some Drunk History.
It's always a bit deceptive to paint Australia in 1921 as part of the British empire. We gained independence in 1901 although we kept fairly close ties to the UK.
I assume the the same for South Africa and Canada and New Zealand
This isn’t quite accurate. The separate colonies federated into the commonwealth of Australia in 1901, but for all intents and purposes the commonwealth was still under British control. Britain held the ability to dictate foreign policy and create laws in Australia well after federation. Australia gained functional independence during WWII, however Britain held the right to create laws for Australia all the way until the Australia Act was passed in 1986 (though they hadn’t done this in decades and likely couldn’t without Australia declaring immediate independence, so it was more of a formality). Important to note that self-government =/= independence at this point and that in 1921 Australia was still very much a part of the empire
@@michaelhibbard654 Canada was 1982
@@lobstered_blue-lobster was that actual independence or nominal independence.
@@michaelhibbard654 the actual independence because than they had like full control of Canada with the laws and policies that were made and passed no longer required the permission/consent from the British.
To be fair to the European decolonization, there were very few areas large enough to be a country that were controlled solely by one ethnic group. Humans lived in Africa longer than anywhere else and there were ethnic groups all over the place. The Europeans didn't find nation-states for the most part, but rather empires. The only natural nation in Africa that I could think of is Egypt and they were generally part of other empires for the last 2,000 years.
Part of all of Ethiopia have been an independent country for centuries, but Ethiopia is an unstable empire. There is a low-scale Civil War going on in Ethiopia right now.
Modern India's a mess even if some call it one 'ethnic' group. In reality it's an empire of different languages and cultures. It was left with a democratic system but the caste system and religious hatred have never gone away. Trying to deal with this is hard with any government. You can't depend on politics which just resorts to bigotism and blaming history instead of addressing problems.
@@starrynight1657 They also introduced affirmative action for the lower castes which also messed things up.
Hi mr terry
Hi mr terry
Bob hale did a great report on this
I’d love to see extra history’s 100 years war if you want to do more on England
its crazy that our country used to be so heavy on religon, nowadays here in England a lot of churches are closing and relgion is finally starting to die out a bit
More mosques are opening thought
@@zainmudassir2964 yeah the british people are leaving religon and those lot are putting mosques up in there place, some citites have been fully taken over like birmingham, the UK is loosing its culture to the middle east now
Since "Britishness" is no longer linked to Protestantism and Empire, then you have to redefine what it means and what the UK stands for today. The Empire is long gone and Protestantism is a private hobby as opposed to what it meant in the days of Rule Britannia. The UK could stand for shared cultures, tolerance and a remebrance of it's history, both of England and the British Isles respectively, whatever problems people might have with that history and cultural cringes.
Some kind of "Great Replacement" is not happening but the UK now is very diverse and multicultural which has been a gradual process out of historical developments and also the fault of Western powers meddling in the Middle East causing disruptions which resulted in migration westwards. The West actually has no right to complain. Principally those who have been great Colonial Empires.
But i wouldn't go so far as to say the UK is losing it's culture, just becoming more diverse. A lof of foreginers coming to the UK actually feel happy to celebrate "Britishness" whatever it means for them.
It could be that there is some sort of clash between "Englishness" and "Britishness" today because "Englishness" is that older, more parochial and national identity while "Britishness" has a more cosmopolitan and modern flavor.
Churchgoing in the West has declined but the world in 2021 is, let's put it, alarmingly religious.
(Just thoughts from a random Finnish guy)
