  • Soft gas pedal? A stretched out throttle cable in a Ford or Mazda can cause that.Take a look at your throttle cable. See if the pedal moves up and down and has "slack". If so, your throttle might not be opening all of the way so you are not getting full power. If you floor the car the throttle might only be open 80%.
    Watch the video to see how a few wire ties can restore this lost power!

    Haha, someone told me to close my eyes and just listen to some of the things I say hahaha... It did not increase fuel economy by anything noticeable, but it did improve performance (acceleration specifically). The spring is not weakened, the metal throttle cable that opens up the intake is stretched. That spring helps account for some of the stretching, but after enough stretching over time, you need more than the spring.

    Yea, Ive heard about this before but never paid much attention until recently when we were helping my dad move and was pulling a trailer with my '03 4.0 Ranger (currently 69k miles) loaded with stuff and furniture. Really had to press the pedal hard to get into any power and to downshift when climbing a hill. Mind had quite a bit of slack once I looked at it and a couple zip ties made a world of difference. Very worthwhile simple mod once you twist yourself into a pretzel to reach up under there......lol

      I have loss of power in my 2005 ford explorer. the mechanic said that we're going to start with the egr valve and intake manifold gasket. my uncle replaced the egr valve. we also cleaned the throttle body (which is electronic. it doesn't have a manual pulley system like the one in this video) I also cleaned the MAF sensor. the car ran better for 2 days. did it run better because of one of the items I cleaned and I should replace either the MAF sensor or throttle body? or should I continue to replacing the intake manifold gasket. it seemed like my mechanic was guessing when they said "we're going to start from there"

    • @xenonmorphcoleman4298
      @xenonmorphcoleman4298 Рік тому +2

      I know on newer ford's the throttle bodies are horrible, I am replacing them daily. I would suggest to start with that. However if you are doing this on a budget I would suggest to start with the cheapest thing the mechanic said.

  • @sharedknowledge6640
    @sharedknowledge6640 8 років тому +1

    Great idea. My truck had the same issue. Not only are you missing some power due to more restricted airflow but, if it's bad enough, the ECU won't ever go into Wide Open Throttle mode where it optimizes the air fuel ratio for maximum power and also can do things like shut off the A/C compressor. Most any scan tool will show live TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) values and mine was only going to 80% with the gas pedal on the floor. Ford sadly decided to make the entire throttle cable/linkage non-adjustable, the cable stretches over time, and I don't think mine was even opening all the way when it was brand new. It's a bad design.

    1992 Mazda E2000 SD series truck motor home. I switched to BP and changed the fuel filter. Originally built with a non pressure petrol cap I replaced the pressurised one which was causing fuel to get into the charcoal canister. (three times and mechanics could not work out why this happened} Research by me indicated I needed to get a petrol cap that breathed and not cause pressure build up inside the tank. Goes as good as new now and pulls like a champion.

    Chris, I have done this repair before, and had an issue with the zip tir getting snagged up as the cable tries to pull thru the spring. Could possibly cause throttle sticking issues? I replaced the zip ties with some medium sized squeeze on sinkers. The round kind made of I think lead that you use pliers to squeeze onto fishing line. Worked great!

    • @chrisfix

    I had my back on the floor, feet out the door... Went in head first. Seat all the way back. Hmmm... It was tight but once you are in, it's doable.

      Yeah! I am 68 in less than a week and squeaked in on a small 96 2.3l. Wow, at first thought I would have to call a yungun, but kept going under and got it done. Very nice difference(!!), and I pull a trailer sometimes and this will be of immense help when starting uphill. Thanks, ChrisFix!

    Nice vid. One look at trying to put on a cable tie in the cab I looked at the bracket at the throttle body and just bent it back a bit. 30sec no contortion under dash moves.

    cables or any metal string stretches over time in use.... So take up the slack in the cable... usually near the throttle body with 2 nuts that move together to loosen or snug the throttle cable. SNUG to take the slack mostly out.... not tight.

    I have a 2011 ranger, 4.0 and I went out to see if I was having this issue and lo and behold I do, im gonna add my zip ties tomorrow, I can tell the truck is kinda not accelerating like how a 4.0 should, especially since my truck doesn't have a spring. So much I have to look into, I thought I had a perfect stock truck, the previous owner left me a mess im barely finding

    Raced my grand marquis against my buddy's v6 accord and lost by at least 7 car lengths I knew his car was faster but no way in hell it was that fast. I did this to my throttle cable and I still lost but this time only by 2 car lengths

    I believe you can adjust the the throttle pedal Cable free play. Its done on the throttle body side. Seen Ericthecarguy do it on older Acura

      umm maybe in the backwoods but you adjust the throttle cable on almost all vehicles. That's the reason it's a cable and not a rod, that and engine movement. Many V6 cars have an adjustment plate inside the engine bay.

    • @PvtMajor00
      @PvtMajor00 6 років тому +39

      this is his mazda, its basically a '01 Ford Ranger and Ford decided with this specific throttle cable assembly to not include an adjustment module. I have one and I looked for almost 15 minutes just to realize it didnt exist lmao.

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun 6 років тому +13

      the ford ranger is a really simple and basic truck, l am pretty sure there is nothing more to that cable than just the wire which means it can't be tightened.
