This is the second version of the bass, the 54. The first bass in 51 was like this with no contours, just a slab body.

The Precision was made to be a bass-version of the Telecaster. Leo Fender elongated the upper horn for balance, thus creating a design that he made a guitar-version of. That guitar is the Stratocaster. So the Strat is a guitar-adaptation of the Precision-bass.
