    The crucial bit missing here that I discovered later when looking at the Haynes manual was measuring the amount of preload and torque required to remove the pinion nut.

      Yeah correct - to tighten the pinion nut in increments - was why I initially took off the break calipers, following the manual.

    Thanks for this, job for me tomorrow. Why did you remove the brake callipers, surely just letting the handbrake off would of done no?

      I followed the Haynes manual that details a preload set up on the differential nut.
      . In order to do that the differential had to be able to turn freely. I in the end just tightened the nut to its original position.

      think it was 26mm
