It would be great to see the program notes VASILIEV wrote about this fascinating take on the famous Ballet. Only by watching the full production, we could get the re-interpretation of VASILIEV.
From what I see here, all of which is absolutely fascinating staging in excerpts form, adorned by wicked extravagant choreography, is the story of a human KING/Sorcerer, I will name, JULIUS Von ROTHBART living a royal life during the day who becomes a witch Sorcerer at midnight in Swan form.
This Ballet is not Swan Lake, it's "The King of Swan Lake."
And, no-one better than Tsiskaridze for the dual role of father, King Julius Von ROTHBART and tortured Sorcerer Swan Nikolay.
If this King is competing with his son Siegfried for Odette, I don't see any solid evidence of it. But, let's keep in mind that this footage is all about The SORCERER dancing and we are not prevy to the full production which probably has mime scenes galore!!!
This role front 👏 and center, is even more demanding than Spartakus and Tsiskaridze takes the luxury to the great extremes his dancing always defined him.
In this version the Sorcerer Swan is not killed by son Siegfried, but commits suicide so Odette can become a woman and marry his son. This King father becomes a hero in death for his son's life and happiness.
Tsiskaridze is fantastic and Volodia knew what to choreograph for his God given gifts.
Odette here is a supporting player, Siegfried's role up to the point seen here, is a complete mystery.
I would LOVE a full recording of this magnificent production 😍. Great Post BB!!! WOW!!!!

Thank you for this most insightful comment! It is a shame that only this Swan King version and Pique Dame were choreographed specifically for Tsiskaridze! Pique Dame in my humble opinion did not do justice to his lyricism, while it did show up his versatile and masculine dramatic gifts. Personally, I would say that Vladimir Vasiliev is the only one who truly understood and utilized Tsiskaridze's unique combination of elegant stature, dramatic genius with his lyrical grace and flowing arm lines. He stands out above the whirling activity around him as a true King and simultaneous dark sorcerer-swan. I also wish I could see the entire performance!

Thank you for this most astute comment. I think you have summed up Vasiliev's story perfectly. I agree that this ballet is more demanding for the lead male dancer, (Tsiskaridze) than is Spartacus. And Tsiskaridze performs it like no other ever could! It is a shame that there is not a crystal clear filming of the complete ballet that we could treasure forever. Thanks again for your comments!

This is a rare and not complete good story about swan-lake by Vassiliev. It starts very nice and very lifefull! But sthe story dont work becouse the Odette suddenly appeared as the hungarian bride. There is no "black doughter" of the King/Rothbart in the ballett any more. Ziskaridse was very unhappy with his part: He has to sit a long time on his throne - next his beautiful young wife -? and than has to dance a realy difficult part: So he was not unhppy the direction cancelled the whole rather soon.

It is good to see Tsiskaridze the baddie for once. I know this is a very condensed version, but the fraught dancing and strenuous choreography made quite stressful watching. Such an interesting take on the traditional story. Thank you for posting it.

It seems this ballet is choreographed to honor Nikolai and everybody else is a throw back.
He has a lot to dance here and somo beautiful moments. His arm flaps are better than most
female Oddette they can learn from that.
    Very interesting.

I'm not entirely taken - - with Vladimir Vasiliev's "unusual" Swan Lake choreography - - but his skills as a dancer - - in Spartacus - - is quite impressive. He has powerful leaps and turns - - and his splendid "Spartacus Lifts" of his partners - - are worth remembering. Nikolai Tsiskaridze is regal as a king - - with great musicality - - and he knows how to charm - - his audience well. The whole troupe - - gave an enjoyable performance - - including Sergei Filin - - and Elena Andrienko. Than you @ Bundu Ballerina - - for sharing.

Inaspettato e bellissimo.

Where do you find this stuff? Really interesting, and Tsiskaridze's arms are so fluid, he would make a more convincing Odette than some Odettes I've seen lols! Can you explain any more about the narrative? Is it meant to be a little Freudian/Oedipal? Thanks for posting!

You're welcome! This video features excerpts from one of the ballets in my collection. I don't know much about the narrative of this unusual version myself and would be delighted if a commenter could tell us more. All I know is that Siegfried and the King, his father are both in love with the same Swan-Princess. Clearly, the King has some evil powers, but the love of Siegfried and Odette is too strong and ultimately kills him. You could be right that there are additional psychological threads to this story.

I would like to add that it may be incorrect to deduce that the king is the prince's father. One can observe, in the early scene shown in this uploaded video, that the prince is upset by the arrival of this dark king, & he appeals to his mother, but she calms the prince's misgivings. As I understand it, the king is a black Swan King who dearly loves and is desperate to possess the love of Odette. He is also a sorcerer with power to subdue or agitate the swans and others around him. However, despite all his efforts and sorcery, they have not the power to conquer the love between Odette and her Prince and he, the broken-hearted Swan King, dies powerless.

@@TheBunduBallerina I think there is a father son conflict in the story, becouse the King is married with a young nice girl and he wants the swanmaid too. And the King is very cruel against his son.

Actually, he wasn't very nasty, he was actually very miserable and guilt ridden. He loved the Princess (she wasn't really Odette (there was no Odile in this production) and suffered and that suffering was portrayed beautifully by Tsiskaridze. He at the end chose happiness of his son instead of his own.
