Great video
Thank you for the helpful help with my 1st crop of Zucchini this year, my wife n her sister love zucchini so here goes. 73+ 🍁Manitoba hunter Yorkshire expat
Thank you for the video. I have had sprawling zucchini success but need to try the vertical method. I will try this year and let you know how it goes!
Helpful and informative video, they take up so much room in garden, can confidently grow vertically now 👌 thanks mate
Very informative and quick to the point. I get so annoyed by videos of people who have to go through their whole life story before getting to the point 😁😂 I love his voice too, its calm and relaxing. Puts me in zen mode :)
Thank you Mary! I’m glad you found this video valuable! It’s means a lot! Based on some feedback in a previous video I purchased a new microphone so glad you found the audio calming! :) I have some new videos in the works I’m editing I’m hoping to release soon.
@@OrganicBackyardGardening awesome, cant wait! Im getting ready to redo my whole backyard with a large garden and I need all the pertinant information I can get :)
Mary Mary agreed. It wastes much time.
LOL Have you watched any of Johns videos over at ua-cam.com/users/growingyourgreens
Life story in every video. I think he might be the worst at this.
I agree that getting to the point is sooo important and avoiding using a phony ' vocal fry' voice. Croaking voice is annoying
So helpful, thank you. And timely. This is exactly what I am going to do in my square foot garden. I did allot two square feet to the zucchini, but it would be nice to have room at the base to plant other things. I just did something similar with my tomato plant, except I used twine and clips instead of a stake, clipping the main tomato stem to the twine, and attaching the string to the top of my hoop cage that is over my raised bed. It's a little late to go to ag college at the age of 73, so I'm going to UA-cam University instead. I learn so much. I appreciate you.
I started my courgette plant yesterday growing up a stake. Mulched it with dead leaves and deep watered it. Checked it this morning and there are 8 flowers and 2 courgettes! Yesterday there was 1 flower. Amazing!
Ive been doing this for years thats exactly what my plants look like
Hi Annie! Great to know you have been using this method too! Happy growing!
Short and sweet, clear and calm. Gotta love it! Natural born teacher. Thank-you.
Hi Jenny - Thank you so much for the kind words - I love helping so this is wonderful to hear!

Oh man. I planted the whole package of seeds. I now have like 30 zucchini plants. I'm going to be buried in zucchini.
Oh dear! My God have mercy on your soul
If they are not huge go ask people in your neighborhood if they would like to adopt a needy little zuke.
Sell them! 5 bucks a plant
last summer TWO PLANTS provided more than our entire family need! lol
Two words....zucchini bread
Exactly the information I was looking for, presented clearly and without endless fluff about great gran’s garden or the latest doings of the cat. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow I must admit I'm trying this one
I'm going to try this... in a container... on my balcony in San Diego.
Hi Franchesca, Yes, this should work well!
Just subscribed. Like everyone else, I appreciate your concise non rambling presentation and clear camera work!
Welcome aboard!
It would have been nice to see a full picture of the plant to see just how much space you save. The photos were all closeups albeit nice photos.
I would guess it's 1 square foot so you save a lot of space 😊
Yes!
Yes, that was very helpful. I was in a debate as to whether I could grow zucchini in my square foot garden, and the answer is -- yes!
Glad I could help! :)
Never seen this before. Awesome idea. The up close camera work is great.
appreciate so much your concise information which is spot on to real garden issues. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback Joe!
I'm growing mine in 5 gallon buckets and was planning on using tomato cages so this video is cool to see
Wow well that solves an issue I have been struggling with for years now. Vertical zukes who knew such a thing was possible many thanks for the info my friend!
Thank you for this informative video. I am often having issues with squash bugs and was looking to get my squashes off the ground. I will be wrapping aluminum foil around the base of the plant about 10 inches with about 2 inches of it burried in the dirt. This way I can keep them from sucking on the stalk. I am going to row cover the plant while young until it has grown enough that the bottom leaves are no longer touching the ground. This also will help me get 20 plants into my 20 foot space instead of only 10. With food costs to go up this next year I am wanting to grow a years worth of food. So thanks for this video as most square foot gardening information shows you 2 feet of space while you showed me it can be done on 1 foot.
I battle mildew on my zucchini and I am going to try this because I suspect it will help that! Thank you!
Awesome video! Very informative! I have read elsewhere that you should ideally prune the lower leaves close to the main stalk so there is not those big holes sticking out which might harbor pests/disease.
Fascinating idea👍This may also help prevent powdery mildew from forming as there will be more air flow 🙌
This is awesome, lucky I found this channel very happy, great idea.
Thanks for the wonderful comment, happy growing! Cheers, Tim
i love the footage of the bee
Thanks! :)
Yes very helpful, thank you. I just ripped out my yellow squash plant that had like 6 baby squashes on it because i was looking at the beginning of the stem 5 feet away on the ground thinking it was not the same plant.. Those things are huge!!
Just the information I was looking for. I was trying to figure out how to grow zucchini without it taking over my back yard.
Glad I could help!
Just planted a few seedlings from a garden center and will be trying this method. First timer here!
Hey Frank! Good luck! Keep us posted!
Will definitely try this vertical planting since I’m tired of overgrown leaves which take up so much land space and zucchini with bad sides from sitting on the ground. . It will also allow me to plant more than just one plant. I’m so glad I found your video.
Best of luck!
This is my first time growing courgettes and I don't have a lot of room either, so this is ideal.thank you.

I love short videos.
Me too! Thank you!
this is a good idea. My 3 zucchini plants crawl all over the place and as I trim the leaves, springtails got inside broken branches and laid eggs. It's so moist inside.... Gotta get in line for another trip to Home depot
NICE!
I have been using a cage of 6”x6” concrete wire reinforcing. Work great, no ties..
Sounds great!
I use extra tall tomato cages. Works great for me. Also when I prune i use a prune sealer to prevent rot which occurs sometimes when you prune.
Is the prune sealer safe for consumption? Idk if I'd want that in my food
Great tip about putting steaks in on the south side of the plant. This was my first year growing climbing courgettes with some success, however I noticed all the plants were growing in a southerly direction. Looking forward to 2024 season to improve the climbing capability, increase the yield, reduce infection and reduce the footprint. Great video. Thanks.
Thanks so much for the feedback!
Brilliant idea. You just get to the point - definitely recommend your videos, especially for those who are new to gardening. 😊😊😊
So nice of you! Thanks!
Thanks. Im going to try this right now. I was on my way out to the garden to plant more seed, we're trying the three sisters also this year. Thanks a lot for a new good idea. Blessings.
I would never thought of ties, thank you.
This would probably work for yellow squash as well. Thinking square foot I could get one of each in a large tote as containers are all I can handle physically.
@Derek Bartlett yes. Thank you.
Wow!! This is wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing this!! We love zucchini, but it can take up quite a bit of space. I cannot wait to try this!
I will be doing this method this year
Excelente idea, para los que tenemos poco espacio
sí, perfecto para espacios pequeños!
This is great info to have. I just planted my Zucchini today. I will try this! They do take a lot of space. I like to make Zucchini boats with the larger fruits. The smaller ones get fried - yum.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, I may have to try that next year because I think it would help with my Vine borer problem. I can put a thick layer of Diatomaceous Earth on the ground around the stem if I create it vertically
Did it help??? I’m having horrible luck with vine borers and squash bugs.
@@lifeonmockingbirdhill I didn't try it but I have found a solution ...I am growing a squash called tromboncino. The vine is more like a cucumber so the vine borers don't mess with it. I have seeds from last year if you are in the US I can try mailing some. I showed the vine in some of my garden tours last year...and I might have some videos in a play list too. Let me know if you can't find it.
Excellent video! I'm trying square gardening & want some that veggies that need more space. This is a great method & am hopefully that I will not have to eliminate my zucchini plant!
Good Luck!
Very helpful video, I think I'm going to do exactly this with my 2 zucchini plants. They are sprouting inside now and I've been wondering where I'll put them!
Last year I saved the stalks from a few giant sunflowers and stashed them in the garage to dry out. If they look good and study I'll grow the zukes up 2 of those.
So glad you found this helpful! Happy growing this year! :)

What a great video, one that will come in handy to anyone with a limited amount of space, but still wants to grow their own foods. Thanks and yes, I am going to subscribe as this is a good place to learn.
Thanks Sharon!
We only got male blossoms 2 years ago when we tried, so really hoping we'll actually get zucchini this year! 🤞
Totally normal at the start of the plant - give it time! :)
I’ll defo give this a go, makes a lot of sense
Hey Ben, Glad it helped - let me know how it goes!
Mind. Blown.
Super helpful, thank you for the quick to the point information.
You're welcome!
I actually have to make another bed for my squash and zucchini because they take up so much room. Going to try this and see if I can fit a few more plants in 😀
Keep us posted! :)
I like the idea and I'm going to try even if my garden is not small.
Yes! Good luck! :)
I have been growing mine this way for several years now. They can get tall enough to have the silhouette of a palm tree which is very interesting. This method gets the plant up off the ground, clear of the lawn mower and also makes it so much easier to check for squash bugs. Try it and you will probably wonder how you did without this method.
@Derek Bartlett ...they do not actually live in the soil but rather they like to hide under items on the ground like boards, mulch, etc.
I will definitely give it a try in spring. Thanks so much
Hi Inna! Thanks for watching, awesome. Let me know how it goes!
This helped me so much! I was worried about space as I only made a 12 foot by 3 foot garden box plus another 2 foot by 2 foot box, my grandma was telling me squash would take up half of thatm
Thanks for the comment! If you were growing it the traditional way, your grandma is right!
I grew ten zucchini plants this year, and all are decent sized at this point. I will carefully try to stake with one plant to build up my skill to do it correctly for next season. I have regular twine, so that'll have to do for now
Let us know how to goes David! Good luck!
Fab. Simple and effective. Easy to understand and copy. Thankyou.
Glad it was helpful!

Great! Love zucchini!
Interesting! We have the most viscous squash bugs that are impossible to kill in Albuquerque. They hide at the bottom of the plant but this method may make it easier to keep them under control. I will try it! Thank you for sharing!
I have grown my zucchini this way for years in Albuquerque's North Valley...this makes it so much easier to spot the bugs without having to lean way over or get down on the ground....the very young look like almost like little spiders and a spray bottle of soapy water will do them in nicely...for the mature bugs spray with the soapy water to force them out where it slows them down enough for you to pick them off and drop into a container of soapy water... any patches of little beady eggs can be carefully cut out from a leaf with a sharp knife and dropped into the soapy water also...and a leaf with a hole in it will survive just fine....
You just got another subscriber I love the simple straight forward approach.

OMG! Genius!!!
Thank you for the great video. I do wonder, though, if this method could lead to a borer making quicker work of ruining the entire plant. I'm only posing the possibility because I don't have a lot of experience and welcome feedback. I would prefer this method as I am using mason ladder as a trellis arch for my tomatoes and thought routing the zucchini towards it with a stake would help give it more sun.
Excited to try this this year💚

Hi Lea, glad I could help! Happy growing!
Thank you, I put up a huge tent cause of the hail in Colorado, so now with your tip of staked zucchini , my tent can be smaller for 3 plants of zucchini, hooray.
I didn't realize that - wow, that adds another complexity to gardening! Would love to see a photo of that - if your on instagram I'd love for you to share it! instagram.com/organicbackyardgardening/

Thank you!!! 😊
This is just what I needed! Thank you!
No Problem! Glad I could help! :)
I see several feet of cut off pieces from base upwards. Do you do that to encourage it to grow longer vertically or is that from harvesting and it keeps adding length to grow more zucchini?
Put them inside a garden cage when planting. As they grow, pull them inside cage. Works 4 me.
I am definitely trying this. Genius
Thank you for sharing
