i remember one time i sang this on stage at a karaoke night in Albuquerque with my brother. good times. i'm so proud of him for getting into the mail room
I just tried to imagine myself in her shoes singing this to her husband whom she was divorcing at the time and just imagining all of the emotions and heartbreak as well as the regrets and hurts that she must’ve been feeling. I made myself cry. My parents have actually been divorced for most of my life so I know very well the heartbreak and hurt as well as the confusion and all of the emotions that come with divorce. But even a single teenage girl can sing this song imagining herself divorcing her husband and start crying. This song is just so real and heartbreaking
It had already grown old in the mid 80s because the productions were very zeitgeist to the late 70s. So it's anything but timeless. But a masterpiece for sure.
This song means a lot to me because it was my father's favorite song from ABBA before he passed away. I know he was a flawed man, who sometimes his feelings would get the better of him, but he also was that father who would do anything to his kids. He always showed me great songs from his century and one of them was ABBA. Thank you dad... I miss you.
Arguably the crown jewel in an album that already lives up to its title "gold". An absolutely timeless masterpiece from a band whose sound can only be imitated, never truly duplicated.
As a swedish abba fan, I have not listened to many of their songs, but I've been rendeeming myself lately with their songs, and all I gotta say is that they are really good! :) how was I not born in the 80s....awh.
Agnetha, you are a class apart. Love you a lot. I have been listening to your music since childhood. I am almost 50 now. Music knows no boundaries, no caste or creed, high or low, black or white. Thank you for the music.
My wife and I have done this song many times during our karaoke nights, so you wouldn't believe how thrilled I was when we saw this on Better Call Saul this weekend!
I will always love you Penny Lynne Nichols. Just didn’t realize how much I did until it was over. I don’t know about you but there was no winner in my book. I pray you find a man who can be everything I wasn’t. Just know that you’ll always be in my heart as the only lady I ever loved. I’m sorry and I’d take it all back in an instant.
I dont know if this is an indirect allusion to your life, but if not and you wrote an actual book please give the name!! if anything is inspired by abba it must be good
I have heard a lot of sad songs in my life but none of them feel like this. This song is just filled with real, true, regret and heartbreak. The lyrics are honest and meaningful. They are real they convey real emotions that real people (including these singers) feel. The pain and heartbreak that comes from breaking up or divorcing is perfectly displayed in this song. The tragedy and heartbreak of that situation is all around this song. And her absolute heartbroken and regretful voice is so real. You can hear and feel the pain she’s singing about. This is probably their biggest accomplishment song wise. It’s not even my absolute favorite but as far as masterpieces go this one is theirs.
This is such a big song. It is so powerful. And it touches me every single time. Every time when I let somebody win it all. It is not about winning. It's about life. Sometimes there are no words left. Just an empty space. I love this song.
ABBA member Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote this after separating from wife and fellow band member, Agnetha Fältskog. It's about a divorce where one person doesn't want to separate and clings desperately to the marriage. It put Agnetha in the strange spot of being asked to sing a breakup song written by her ex-husband. Ulvaeus didn't intend it this way. He explained: "I sang a demo of it myself which a lot of people liked and said, you have to sing that. But I saw the sensible thing of course, it had to go to Agnetha. I remember coming to the studio with it and everyone said, Oh this is great, wonderful It was strange hearing her singing it. It was more like an actress doing something when she sang it, but deeply moving. Afterwards there were a few tears as well."

Music of that era will never come back, they are diamonds buried deeper and deeper in time with each passing year. So much is lost from those years, i remember it all too well. Yes, the ‘80s were a goldmine of wonder, and undoubtedly the best decade for a child to grow up in. Ever.

I don't want to talk
About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play
The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny
I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules
The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain
But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed
The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all
I don't want to talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all
So the winner takes it all
And the the loser has to fall
Throw a dice, cold as ice
Way down here, someone dear
Takes it all, has to fall
It seems plain to me
