- Hay hay and more hay. Timothy, Orchard, Alfalfa, Fescue. What kind to buy? As we come into spring here's what I have and why I have leftovers. My personal opinion of the quality of my hay.

I too watch Graeme’s channel as he also loves to teach and share with his viewers what he knows. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It’s very disappointing to find out after the fact that some of your hay is crappy. Had that happen to me as the distributor ran out and got half the load from someone else. Once it was all loaded in my barn I never noticed until I got to it and by then was winter and hard to find hay as there weren’t many farmers around my location who had hay to spare. Hard lesson to learn.
Moreen, thats what happened with the crappy hay. Lesson learned. Buy early and get it tested first.
thanks!
Should i feed the horses Timothy hay or alfalfa hay?
It’s completely up to you, you and your horses activity level. Some horses become “hot” if given alfalfa, like Jack our old TWH, my boys, not so much, but they need the anti-inflammatory of the alfalfa and the extra protein. Timmothy is great hay but is expensive and won’t make your horses “hot” Have you looked into Teff? It’s a great alternative to Timmothy and super low in Sugar and Starch. Perfect for a Draft, or one with Cushings, PSSM or an IR horse.
Summerfield Farm and Draft Horses, thanks so much! I will defiantly look into Teff hay! Thanks for the suggestion
good news! I found some Teff hay near me! Ill make sure to buy some when my barn is finished being built!
