The Japanese Imperial Army was not the Samurai. The 1877 incident he mentioned was the Battle of Shiroyama, where 500 samurai took their last stand against the Imperial Army.
Am I the only one that would be terrified of somehow managing to ruin/damage a piece of armor that is not only that old but also was worn by that man's ancestor?
"680 years ago" The man knows his family history up to 680 (maybe more) years ago! Anyone else know all his ancestors and their history back 680 years? I traced mine about 500 years, not through my family but through very long researches. But their history is still a big unknown. Finding your ancestors makes you part of a family. Knowing your history makes you part of a people, of a community! Thanks Mr. May!
Well, being a samouraï means being the equivalent of a small noble in Europe, so for those family, it was very important to prove their rights of birth and heraldry, hence the very detailed informations on their ancestry. If you meet nobleman (yes they still exist) in Europe, you can ask them about their lineage and they should be able to tell you all you need to know about it.
i have good records to 1750 then it gets a bit fuzzy for about 100yrs then back to good records till about the 1400s a bit fuzzy again for about 300some odd years and then a mention of a clan i can date my family to around 1100 then the record ends
Cool :) All information, documents and proper history must be preserved, so that future generations have the right to know and the continuity of preserving the knowledge of their roots 👍
You may mock the use of the bicycle for samurai usage James, but the Japanese took Singapore on bikes and handed us (the British) our worst ever military defeat. Never underestimate a Japanese warrior on a bike...
There’s a guy in Japan that’s 16th in-line from his family that teachers a martial art with a sword you should go see that guy. Very interesting history.
James' pose at 2:58 is actually pretty cool. Too bad it's James May but still. EDIT: The son did the same pose, mostly, at 3:11 but James looked cooler, which feels strange... I think it's cos James is larger and had his sword arm extended, with hand resting on the pommel.
James is bulkier and older, which evokes a sense of wisdom and menace combined with the suit of armor. The heir to the house, while more suited (pardon the pun) to the task is far younger and, at the moment lankier, so he doesn't fill out the armor yet.
As everyone mentioned James is larger and older, but he also casts a larger shadow over himself. This gives him more of an imposing presence in the room combined with his stature and age to make a much more experienced and battle worn look.
I'd like to imagine that if the movie the Last Samurai had mountainbikes instead of horses, the samurai would have been victorious. Also would have been epic.
The reason why he did this is because in the Top Gear Patagonia Special, James was thrown off a horse hurting his back when he tried to mount it. As a result, he hates horses.
Who else wants to be a Samurai warrior for a day?
Me
Me
Who doesn't?
Of course! Is that an offer? 🙂🙏
Me
The armour must feel proud to be worn by such an antique piece of British history
😂
I mean we all know that James is as old as it
james may doesn't born as a baby, he's born as *james may*
we want James in Ghost of Tsushima as DLC playable character
Early English explorer rests at Japanese port. Then he sees on horizon a Mongolian Invasion Fleet approaching. "oh cock"
Shimura: this dishonorable gaijin has no place in tsushima like those mongols!
Jin sakai: ..and you are a slave to honor!
James: bloody nora
I'd pay money for that, though he has to be slow.
I wouldn't ask devs for a DLC, but modders for a head swap
James falls through a portal ends up in early Japan "Clarkson!".
James, Jeremey, and Richard could record themselves knitting a blanket and I’d watch.
Apart, they are entertaining. Together they are Legend.
The Grand Tour Go Knitting

Ah yes, the first face I think about when Samurai Warriors get mentioned.
James May
James "The Appropriator" May
The Japanese Army actually DID use bicycles in WW2; they were highly effective in facilitating the capture of Singapore.
The Japanese Imperial Army was not the Samurai. The 1877 incident he mentioned was the Battle of Shiroyama, where 500 samurai took their last stand against the Imperial Army.
It's a well established fact that all the horses in the world hate James May, and if they are given the option will try to kill or cripple him.
Perhaps Jezza's long term olans as a farmer involve buying and breeding horses. For this purpose
they don't hate James, they just hate the voice he makes when he's riding them
I have to say James. Thats the coolest thing youve done in the last 20 years that ive been following you
ooh I don't know. His flight to the edge of space was pretty up there
@@cosmickittie78 I completely agree.
"What does katana mean?"
"It means Japanese sword."

not gonna lie, it would be an impressive feat to destroy something made to withstand war just by wearing it
@@gamer_eza47you may think so, but after 600 years things may get a little fragile.

We know the history of our family for more than 4000 thousand years :)
Family tree on my end is mapped out to a little before 4th century. So we have a few years covered.

Seriously, James rocks that look. He looks like he could play a foreign samurai in a film
I think he looks good as long as he's sitting down lol

May: Sees horses
Also May: *Falling off from horse in TG Patagonia Special flashbacks intensifies*

Maybe, just maybe james may is Reincarnation of master samurai long - long ago
he looks bigger and wider compared to the son
As everyone mentioned James is larger and older, but he also casts a larger shadow over himself. This gives him more of an imposing presence in the room combined with his stature and age to make a much more experienced and battle worn look.
The indigo dyed pieces matched May's eyes so well , absolutely ace samurai
James is having TG Patagonia Special flashbacks
NO HORSES!
Jeremy,James and Hammond should have a samurai duel on the mountain peaks of japan
I'd like to imagine that if the movie the Last Samurai had mountainbikes instead of horses, the samurai would have been victorious. Also would have been epic.
Samurai with a folding bicycle....
What's next Captain Slow , A Dacia Sandero inside a tortoise shell?
Never underestimate the humble bicycle. Even WWII soldiers cycled to cover long distances on bad roads.
The reason why he did this is because in the Top Gear Patagonia Special, James was thrown off a horse hurting his back when he tried to mount it. As a result, he hates horses.
the armour was well picked it matches well with james may's eyes as seen at 2:38 and again at 2:58 - 3:00

Right, i forgot. I now finally finished Clarksons Farm S1 and while i wait for S2, I'll watch James May in Japan😂

What a Glorious way to end the video... By riding a bicycle to battle!
The Japanese have done that before, actually; bicycles helped them capture Singapore in WW2.
Gaijin Samurai on a bike, now I seen it all.
I see James May, I watch
2:33 side mounted sword and yet he thought the Momotaro statue had a willy sticking out? Yeeeeah
I just wanted him to get one Battle stance and yell his Battle cry! "Clarkson!!!"
