I love the 4th generation Asian-American and adoptee aspects. Very interesting.
Growing up in a White-American family, we seriously ate garlic bread for every dinner. Garlic bread is life.
+djokawari I wish I had garlic bread every dinner..I freaking love it lol but Alas! I ate rice hahaha
Growing up Asian, I was told I can't jiggle my leg while I'm sitting cuz then I'll go broke cuz all the change will jiggle out of my pocket. #gg #fml #cantdothestankyleg
+SimplyYue My mom always told (and still tells me :P) the same thing! She says I'll "shake out all my good luck."
+SimplyYue my mom said it was what sluts did and i was always 'wtf' ing
still do it
SimplyYue I was literally shaking my leg while reading your comment no joke
Somebody in my family said that if you shake your legs that means that you're not happy in life or you're not going to be happy in life.
I've had at least one pimple on my face every single day for the past 7 years. I'm clean and hygienic, I exercise regularly, I don't eat too unhealthy, I change my pillow cases every night, I've been to a dermatologist... So the only answer is that my future significant other must not have eaten her rice. :( and I'm not joking about the 7years.. It sucks :(
+Spazamazz LOL! Not laughing at your pimple, but the fact that now you have an explanation for it :P
Hey at least you know this means you will one day have a significant other! :)
What the hell is meatloaf?!?
I always thought Wong Fu invented ISA TV o:
+Chris Cheng They did but I believe Dan runs the channel and is more of the boss for the interns than Wong Fu only because they have to run their own channels.
+kawaiiafangirl Yup! We started it, but he keeps it going and we're always helping =)
I am half African American and half Japanese. I was raised by my Japanese mom. I can relate to a lot of this. My mom used to tell me that her dad said that a farmer worked very hard to produce every grain of rice so out of respect, you must eat every grain of rice. We were and still are a no shoe household. When going to a Caucasian friend's house, it was strange to keep my shoes on. I also got disciplined. My mom learned from my African American grandma some ways to discipline on top of her own disciplinary actions. I got disciplined with a spatula, belt, shoe, rice paddle, the thing that helps you put on shoes, etc. I also got the soap in the mouth for cursing. And last but not least, I did a few extracurricular activities. I did piano, flute, swimming, after school Japanese language learning classes. I love this segment you guys do! Wong Fu for life!
i leave the "free screen protector" on my new phones too.. now i feel cheap lol
+phil chao it's been like almost a year since i got my iph6 and i still have the "free screen protector" on lmao.............
omg i love dan :D he's so funny. and his documentary about meeting his birth family was so moving ^^
Haha Taylor is awesome! 2:51 冰水 needs to be on infinite loop. (not that I could say it any better)
I don't get why like most non-Asians don't take off their shoes when they go into their house, don't your carpets get all dirty and you got like wash it all the time? Also what about those who jump on their bed, it's not something I've seen just something I've heard.
+Apparatex I feel like a lot of non asians do actually take off their shoes but it isn't something that is enforced into the culture. I feel like many people do it as a form of relaxation after a long day...you know drop bag, remove jacket, shoes, then collapse on the coach..or is that just me? haha
jumping on the bed with shoes on is freaking gross though xP
+VioletIceFire Yeah I got what you're saying, it's that like I've heard people jump on their beds with their shoes on and I wonder how they don't think about how they will get the place where they sleep dirty.
+VioletIceFire That you say it I actually do think that's where I got my question from;p... Although I think most everyone knows that's not the best thing to do, but if you want to it's alright lol
+Apparatex Sometimes staying in hotels my (Asian) parents will tell me to wear my shoes inside, and wow it's so uncomfortable and the floor gets dirty so fast. I don't know how Westerners do it.
Honestly...I have never eaten at Panda Express before lol
+Kayla SSailor WE'LL NEVER ESCAPE FROM THE SATAN BUNNY THAT IS JUNGKOOOOOK
LOLL Dan sounded like Bubba from Forrest Gump. "I love sandwiches. Ham sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches." xD
I totally agree. Being born Chinese, I get mad when people say that they wanna eat Chinese food and it's Panda. Not even one of those legit sit down Chinese restaurants where you eat family style. I do admit I eat Panda, sometimes when I'm at school and idk what I wanna eat, I'll just have it. But some people around this world, maybe just some ignorant white people, don't realize that this is not what we eat everyday. To me Panda is like fast food Chinese American food. We don't eat orange chicken all day, and orange chicken is brown with orange flavor, not orange itself, for example. I remember I was eating Panda somewhere and I overheard a white guy say this was the best Chinese food he ever had. I was so shocked. But idc if people eat it, I just want them to be aware and know that this isn't true to what actual Chinese people eat at home. Like Japanese people don't eat sushi all the time. Sorry it sounds like a rant lol xD
It's quite strange listening to all this when I'm from Singapore. Everything your saying is something so normal for us that we don't notice it. It's really fascinating how certain Asian American culture is so scrutinized and analyzed when it's just "life" for me and how other aspects of your life seems so American to me. 真的很喜欢这个节目!
+Diane Choo Hey I'm from Singapore too!! My parents were always really un-Asian though, they said "I love you" all the time and stuff. And I'd feel super uncomfortable if I didn't eat rice with soup for breakfast and dinner every day.
Im mad i just watched this video hella late...but my favorite part is the meatloaf thing. Im Samoan and pops was in the military so my first time eating meatloaf was when I was in high school for school lunch. I was so fascinated cuz I only seen kids on tv shows complain about it. We did not eat a lot of American food growing up either. Samoan/Polynesian food all the time which, while growing up in Texas was different, but being older now I totally appreciate it.
Love these lunch breaks! Keep going!:)
The best part of experiencing what Wong Fu Productions has to offer is that I don't fall into the Asian portion of their fan base because I am white. It was quite interesting to hear all these stereotypical Asian versus American comparisons. By the way, I watched Everything Before Us a few nights ago and I absolutely loved it. You guys have a talent for pulling out the emotions from the viewers to get the most out of your material. It's was funny to see an article today about a new app coming out soon called Peeple which allows people to rate other people based on different categories. It made me think of how you guys brought a scenario like that to life and how it affected different characters in their lives'.
Never really thought of the moment when Phil got hit by his parents when he was a child haha...but it's just so TRUE LOL!!!
I didn't hear about the rice and pimple thing personally from my parents. But I remember reading about it from The Joy Luck Club--- one of my favorite and must-read books.
You guys are soo cool! It's great learning about the Asian culture from you guys. There aren't many Asians from were I'm from, Colombia, but it's funny to see how different cultures can be very similar. Latinos are also known for keeping the plastic wrap on electronics, sofa, etc. And we also eat lots of rice. At least in Colombia we do. It's not lunch if it doesn't have rice!
Discipline is also pretty much how Christine described it...🙊😂😂
Funniest episode yet, love you guys
This is hilarious because I'm a Korean adoptee too!!! Also, I love Taylor in every Lunch Break vid ^^
You guys are awesome !!
I can relate so much to this!! I've always ate rice during lunch time, and I didn't eat my first peanut butter and jelly sandwich until I was 15!
I think about the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" were as a child the woman wanted to have a sandwich on Wonder Bread, but had Moussacka instead. My mother is filipina and wanted to give me hard boiled eggs, fish something or cold chicken, and carrot sticks. If she made a sandwich it had to have a egg in it. It was a secret from my peers that I loved smoked/dried sardines, or have to urge to eat with my hands. Lol!
this is the episode that i wanted them to keep on comparing their experiences! haha
Great and entertaining video!
What Christine said at 3:07 is exactly what my parents say to me when I don't finish my rice. lol
I love these videos
I LOVE YOUR DANCING TAYLOR YOUR UPTOWN FUNK DANCE WAS THE BEST HAHA B-)
Watching this video was very interesting being from Canada, because of the difference in Canada and America lifestyle. For example in Canada you defiantly take off your shoes when you enter a house, or how the large majority of people don't have the certain foods for certain days (ex taco Tuesdays). Another two and I don't know if these goes for everyone but I have never had meat loaf and my family only eats bread at dinner for special occasions.
You guys should have Korean food for the next Lunch Break! Or....mandu :))) Hehehe and bring back TED!!!! or Chris ^^ Hehe cannot wait for the next episode :) This is one of the videos I look most forward to when I log into UA-cameeeeeee!! OH OH AND YOU GUYS COULD MAYBE TALK TALK TALK about............most embarrassing childhood/college memories
i love dans adoption documentary! watched it a while ago and was so moved
This is Asian parents
Me: Mom I got a A
Mom: Wutttt? No not good👿 Only A+ no A++
Me:.....................Ugh
+Emily Tran I did badly in elementary school, so my parents' expectations were low, so when I brought back A's in HS or college they welcome it with open arms lol
+Emily Tran tbh im asian and my parents dont care about my grades
as long as i try my best and at least attend school xDD
+ISAtv I was literally like going to say I love ISA but.....
Mom: Get off your phone! Go study
Me: Hold on
Mom: No I don't come to America to have stupid baby
Me: 😒
The extracurriculars part is 100% true for Indian parents as well. I was in Kumon, did gymnastics, ran cross country, played volleyball and tennis. Played the violin and piano. Played in chess tournaments. Fuck, it was difficult.
awesome episode!
It's really cute how Dan hops a little when he gets excited.
my parents used to tell me that if I didn't eat all the rice on my plate all the food would represent my face in the future
I'm very proud to be a 10 year old 1st generation Vietnamese Asian American!!!!!!🇻🇳🇻🇳🇺🇸🇺🇸
I'm half Asian. I've heard the acne rice thing lol. Also did Kumon, competitive swimming, instruments, the whole deal. Great episode. Don't hit your kids.
Love your dancing, Tay! Dont worry!
Ps: Luv also videos on your channel
this was fun! most Asian Americans in Hawaii are actually 3rd or 4th generation. right there with ya Taylor
as a half English half French Canadian my entire family takes off their shoes in the house... (sometimes have shoes to just wear inside or slippers) unless just going to grab something quickly and you have absolutely zero mud or dirt on them. also we have potatoes with practically every meal, unless we are having pasta (which we then also have bread on the side) or rice!
When Dan talked about selling sandwiches my mind went immediately went to the sandwich-obsessed alien from "Lilo and Stitch" haha.
When Phil said you don't want to end up dancing like Taylor I was like "but wait, he was the second best in the Uptown Funk video!"
Also, I feel like my friends and I have had the "who's more Asian" argument lol
im here for you tay, i defend your dancing skillz
This episode is great! Totally can relate cause I am an Asian too!
*watches this while eating a bowl of rice, rousong and pickled cucumber slices*
ps.: my grandma told us that every grain of rice left is a year in purgatory. she's intense.
+pwangs haha rest assured my plate's always hella clean. Can't take any chances.
Wah Christine! my parents told me the same thing about the acne and the rice thing!!!!
5:30-5:50 Yo Phil! I get you, that's exactly what I said when I got my new phone!!! lol And as a proud African Canadian, I keep the plastic on some things like my tv and my laptop. My grandparents kept the plastic on the couches! lol
Yes another Wong fu video
anw, nice to see you again Taylor :D
Christine your hair is gorgeous ^-^ teach us please! =D
lol I never got the logic of why u wouldn't take off your shoes in the house!!! Phil made all great points regarding this haha
I'm from Taiwan. Somehow excited to see you guys speaking Chinese :)
i can relate to all the chinese immigrant parent things so much it makes me laugh; especially mom and dad telling me to finish all my rice haha!
Love your music videos DAN also i Love Panda express
Wong Fu makes me laugh all the time
Christine, i love your hair and earrings today! you look gorgeous and i like your accent in mandarin, haha!
Christine looks gorgeous in this week's Lunch Break! :D
Now this video is something that I can relate too.
OMG YES CHRISTINE! My parents always said the same thing about leftover rice.
Reminds me of my childhood! But only first generation for me, but growing up in Hungary while attending the American school! It gets a bit complicated ;)
Watching this reminded me when my parents put me in a asian tutoring center, it was hell. Every kid was stuck in that tutoring center for 4-6 hours just doing work because everything had to be correct and written neatly. If you had ONE mistake or your hand writing was sloppy we would get yelled at and told to fix all mistakes :| Was in there for 4 years and I manage to see 10 small kids cry.. So sad! D:
i love taylors dancing so much
I never realized people didn't take off their shoes in the house !!! 😱 you learn smth new every day lol. Also during lunch my mom would pack me cuttlefish and when I opened it the white kids used to gag. So embarrassing. -.- lol loved this video btw. I can relate to so many of these points
I'm adopted too, but my mother is the white tiger mom. She lived in Taiwan for about two years and brought the culture back with her. We eat a lot of Americanised Asian foods and she tried to get me speaking Mandarin. Key word, tired. She's definitely not a Chinese mother but she's as close as a white mom could get.
Lol Phil I kept the screen film for my phone too 😂
This was such an interesting perspective because I've never gotten an adoptee or generational Asian's persepctive before!
My mum used to say that about leaving rice on the plate too!!! 😂😂😂
half asian but my sister and i lived with our dad (white)... yet we went to sylvan (like kumon), math tutoring, ballet, tae kwon do, gymnastics, cello, and violin for me, and the flute for her. then he also tried to get us to learn piano on the side. and i don't remember a thing from it all.... @-@ well, okay, maybe one violin song....
it's funny bc you mention the taking off the shoes thing, and i was about to retort "oh, i took off my shoes but it was at my dad's place" and then i just realized whenever i went to my grandparents on my dad's side no one ever had to take off their shoes. we also stored plastic bags from shopping and other things. guess my mum actually did rub off on my dad a bit, haha.
LOOOL. I did Kumon, swimming, aikido & piano... x)
I can soooo relate to this video! Totally gone through those stages. Haha.
In the Philippines... My grandparents used to tell me to finish my rice because there are a lot of kids that are starving and do not have the privilege of having meals.
+Hannah Reyes (thisisSHE) Lmao. That's very logical and pragmatic actually. My old-world believing aunt (I'm Filipino btw) would tell me that my soul would leave my body and go around the kitchen to look for food if I skipped a meal.
You guys should do the spicy noodle challenge :D
i think i've seen dan's twin brother a few times around my university in australia, i always do a double take and there's been so many times where i've contemplated asking but didn't out of manners :o
Omg what. I didn't know he went to uni here. Which uni may I ask. Not to sound like a stalker, just being curious.
+ISAtv maybe i will! haha :) :) i've seen him working! maybe i'll ask him then
I like Taylor's dancing. #taylorsbigfan oh and here's an "amen" to the plastic wrapped remote. I LOLed.
YAASSS PANDA EXPRESS 🙈 being Chinese I feel ashamed but I love it!
I was put in lots of sports and was taught piano. But despite all that, I was hit but clothes hangers and my parents would go to Home Depot and buy thin and thick sticks to punish me. Oh being Chinese, but you really do get disciplined. I feel you Phil and Christine
Philip and Christine's childhood was just like mine haha!
the lunch break is a great series. before I make my comment, I want to say how much I love wongfu. Phil and I are about the same age and I started watching their videos since 2007 which was the year that I graduated from college. so I am big fan. however, I wish there were a variety of asian people. a lot of the asian people that you do have are mostly east asians. southeast Asians definitely have more different experiences. I never knew about kumon, or played an instrument also most of the asian kids that I knew had brown skin (like myself). I get it when you are trying to say who is the most asian and I know what you mean, but different regions asian have different experiences from each other. for example, east asians (Chinese, Koreans and Japanese) tend to be assimilated than Southeast Asians (Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, Lu-Mienh). Or that Filipinos also have different cultural experiences as some of their traditions tend to have similarities as people from Spanish speaking backgrounds. I guess my point is that I wish to see more Southeast Asians and South Asians in your videos.i hope my comment could help add some additional value to the types of video you show. still a big fan and subscribed to UA-cam red because of you series! 😃😃😃
I have 3 adopted cousins. . . But due to some sad situations my parents pretty much took over the parent roles for them so we are like siblings. . . Sometimes we forget, I'll say things like, "you need to be careful, because you know grandpa and dad have high cholesterol... Ah, wait... Well, you know regardless, you need to take care and eat right, ok!?" My family is a melting pot of ethnicities and none of us really look alike but we share the same humor and family mannerism. I took Spanish because that's all that was offered in school but I grew up hanging around a lot Asians so I had people trying to teach me Japanese and Chinese as a kid, and now I am learning Korean. I found Dan's story fascinating. None of my adopted family were interested in finding their birth parents for a long time, but one recently started looking for his birth mom.
I just realized I've never had meatloaf either! I've also never had Panda Express because lately I've been having not so great experiences with Chinese American food, and my partner had a terrible experience with it that caused him to be sick for a week! Eck! Anyways, it was interesting just to see how we pretty much have all the same experiences in the 'more Asian' side and the perspectives of Taylor and Dan is well appreciated. Now I'm curious on how Angelina and Brad's child is going to grow up.
Watching this and eating lunch
awesome episode! And informative, answered many questions I had.But a lil annoying with the video cuts. It's like the video had an unnatural flow. Still great episode ^.^
When I was in the 5th grade, I brought an igloo cooler too! I had gogurt, congee, and Mac and cheese because I just got braces at the time! I was the weird one at lunch for two whole weeks.
OMG! I grandma used to tell me about the rice myth...growing up, I never left a grain of rice in my plate or bowl, lol! Until this day, my friends still remember how I always ate all my food when eating out with them.
I like taylor..he's funny..can't have lunch break without him too
I still wonder where my mum ever got the bamboosticks lol they were just .. there o.O 😂
I totally heard the rice story before! LOL
Dan's voice is really nice to listen to LOL
it always boggles my mind when people wear their shoes inside the house! You have your outside shoes and your inside slippers. I'm not even asian but it gets me every time xD
thinking back on it now, I don't think I ever got hit by anything than a slipper or a heavy hand. I feel blessed about that fact.
Lol I would run away crying from my mum whenever she took out the bamboo cane. And for running away she would hit me an extra time. I used to try to hide the canes just so when I made her mad she wouldn't be able to find the canes. XD
Phil is so dedicated :)
I'm a 4th generation Asian-American too! I would say for the most part, my family still follows a lot of asian traditions. But at the same time its kinda weird because I actually know more Japanese than my parents lol.
Let's just all take a moment to appreciate how pretty Christine looks today.
+Jaydon Tobler That hairdo!
Omg much blushing ☺️ thank you for being so kind 💖💛💚
peachiechristine I'm in love. LOL
+peachiechristine you do look really nice today Christine I'm loving the updo :)))
+Jaydon Tobler She was always pretty!!
