- The Italian actress ,the Late Silvana Mangano ,in one of two very famous songs from the movie (ANNA)of 1951.This song is titled [el negro zumbon] with Spanish lyrics.It was later on,sung by many artists,the most famous are those of Amalia Rodriguez in the 50s and the recent version of Pink Martini.I posted this video in an attempt to repopularize this wonderful film [ANNA] because it has become largely unknown among current generations.I hope that more people after viewing this video would start searching to obtain the complete movie which is a masterpiece of art.
My dad had a 78RPM record of this song on one side and the song 'NON DIMENTICAR' on the other side. It was one of my favorite record and I would have listened to many times when I was growing up now as an old man I have tears in my eyes when I hear this song. I don't understand a word of the song, but I feel the song talking directly to my heart.

I remember an old 78 with this song too... I was a young child at the time....I started thinking about it earlier today but had no clue what the song was...so I asked Google, what's this song, started humming it and voila, this came up. It's the right song...amazing...

I was a very young boy and I had a crush on Silvana Mangano.
I saw the movie and I could never forget the song.
It does bring tears to my eyes.
I heard this as a 13 year old in 1951 on the kitchen radio and loved it . Made up my own rote lyrics which I still sing to this day , not knowing which language she is singing. I thought it was Italian. Interesting she is grandmother to Gia the chef as someone mentioned here. This song became a talisman for me. I was bullied by an older girl in my neighbourhood. Impressed I “knew” the lyrics ..I taught her my rote sounds and we did become soul mates of a kind..over music.

I love this, after I saw the clip in "Cinema Paradiso." I am still having an awful time finding a zone-correct DVD of the movie. I bought a CD of it, and my 8-year-old daughter and I sing and dance to it.

My parents had the 78rpm of the song. My father absolutely loved Iltalian cinema. This is the very first song I ever danced to; Thank you for posting htis, brings back a rush of memories. After frantically trying to work out what this song wes by watching cinema Paradisio, I heard the Pink Martini cover and got the original. But the images are beyond words.

I love this song too. It's supposed to be Brazilian but the lyrics are in Spanish, not Portuguese. Here's my (probly gawdawful) English translation:
Here comes el negro zumbon (like, "the black party guy" or merrymaker)
Happily dancing the baion (Brazil dance)
Banging the zambomba (type of drum)
And calling out to the all the women
Silvana's part (I know, it's not really her, she was dubbed): I have an urge for dancing this new beat
Everybody I pass says:
(chorus sings) "Hey girl, where you going?"
"I'm going to dance, the baion!"
That's it, rinse and repeat. Short but oh so sweet!

@@texfx It's a song written by great composer named Armando Trovajoli, a guy well known to people who like old day italian movies.
Like Ennio Morricone who is also born in Rome he was a superbly productive guy, delivering new movie sound tracks during his long life span, beginning in 1949, Riso amaro (Bitter Rice) , his last contribution was for the movie, concorrenza sleale (Unfair Business Practice)!
The song became very famous in Brasil after the movie Anna (1951) was released !

Silvana Mangano was de mooiste vrouw in de jaren 50. De film ANNA is door miljoenen bekeken waaronder ik. Het verhaal was goed , de muziek El negro zumbon, werd wereld-
beroemd en door andere artiesten vaak gecopieerd. Later werd ze opgevolgd door Gina
Lolobrigida en Sofia Loren. Nu 50 jaar later kijk ik nog regelmatig naar die film en de muziek.

Saw this movie in Cyprus in the 50s when I was a kid, and up to this day I've never forgotten this song, though can't remember the movie itself. Only today I was speaking to my sister who's in London, and she reminded me of this song, so I just had to look it up. Wish I could see the whole movie.

In Quebec where I was born, I was maybe more or less 2 years old (1951--52--53) when that song was playing on the radio and heard it after that occasionally in the 50's and rarely after that...I never forget how I love to hear the music and what sounds even today a playful lyrics although I still do not know the meanings of the words. I love it!
I was about five years old when listened this, (in Finland, west cost, in the city of Seinäjoki) and since then this song and its rythm and acctres it´ts still shivering me. love this so much

I also remember this from "Cinema Paradiso". It's a wonderful song, shot so expertly too. Two questions, though:
1) Did the original film have these awkward, obvious cuts here, where the soundtrack is noticeably out of synch?
2) Is that also Silvana at the start of the scene dressed in a nun's habit? If so, what's the story?? Did she go from being a very sexy nightclub singer to being a nun? (With this scene being a flashback to her previous life...?)

Thanks for this gem! I used to play this song over and over again from my parents record collection. I forget about it completely for 30+ years until I seen Cinema Paradiso.
And I first heard it 30 YEARS AGO watching Cinema Paradiso on the big screen and absolutely loving this scene and wondering about the name of the movie and the actress singing and dancing in it. Fast forward to 2020 when I am thrilled to hear this joyful tune on Netflix’s THE IRISHMAN and to have to power of the Internet, IMDb and UA-cam to finally get some answers. What a wonderful time to live in.
