JJ McCarthy thrived off a strong run game in college. It would be utterly foolish of us not to establish a legit ground and pound run game to help JJ progress.
lol Thrived? he was carried let's be honest. There is nothing wrong with that and it's a huge benefit. Vikings should focus on building dominate trenches because that's what wins in january
McCarthy is also quite fast and mobile, so team that up with a solid back and you'd have a good run game between just those two.
What Qb doesn’t do great with a strong running game!
@@jiordone8563 Christian Ponder.
but KOC won’t…he ain’t that kind of coach…We have 3 years of data that show he is not a run game guy !
Anyone here after the Lions loss 😂so happy
Btw enjoying Phil rip the Lions
i was almost able to quit laughing until i watched campbells post game press conference 😂
I'm more pist off after the lions loss, look what Washington did and what the vikings didn't, that is not good, vikings looked like a high school team
@@fjb1fjb it was literally just Darnold. Go back and look. Vikings had receivers open all over the place
@@Izthefaithful i'm glad to see you have a clue...it's refreshing
@@Izthefaithful it was not just Darnold lmao. Receivers were open but it was also the o line getting their ass kicked and kocs gameplan being garbage in back to back games and never adjusting to how bad Darnold was playing
Three guys walk into a bar. Their names are KOC, Matt LaFleur, and Dan Campbell. They each sit themselves down on the nearest bar stool seats to watch the Playoffs together and drown their sorrows. Who knew that Campbell's prophetic comment, " I'll see you in two weeks ", would come true?
What pisses me off about the last two games this season isn't really the losing, it's how BAD the Vikings looked in the 2nd half of the Lions game, & from the fumble onwards in the Rams game. It just looks like they quit, didn't make adjustments, or improve on ANY-THING. I just watched the Rams fight back and barely lose to the Eagles. *THIS is what fans want! Some fight!!* Not panic followed by collapse, but hanging on even when things aren't going your way. The end of both of those games was EMBARRASSING!
I don't know what else to say!
Isn't that what we pretty much see in all big games from the Purple? It seems no matter how good the defense is in the regular season, it must be smoke and mirrors because in the playoffs they are eventually exposed. . .
@@scottpierce3969 Yes it is. Remember 2017? That was the #1 defense in the NFL.
They played one quarter against Philadelphia and then disappeared in the NFC championship game. Why does this ALWAYS seem to happen??
We need a franchise QB who doesn’t poop his pants in big games.
@@colesmith193 That's one way of putting it yeah!
Well what’s the one thing all these great rushing teams have? A GREAT INTERIOR OLINE!!!
Thank you team for using my submission on this show. JJ is going to need help and getting this offensive line help to help him and the running game will benefit the team even if it’s not cam Robinson moving on the inside
Pay big money for the o-line interior and go all in on moving up (however possible) for Jeanty in the draft.
I would love jeanty but it’ll cost wayyy to much to trade up for jeanty unless he falls to like pick 20, and if we can’t land jeanty kaleb Johnson or Omarion Hampton are great options too
@@UKVike I agree with IOL help but I think we can get a solid RB on day 2. It’s a deep class this year
I say, trade back into the end of round 1 and pick up an extra 3rd and then use one of them for a RB and one for IOL, I think the 1st round pick should be CB because there is a big fall off outside of 5 guys in terms of talent for CB in this draft
Not gonna be able to trade up. Much more likely to trade out of the 1st to acquire more picks to be honest.
We don’t have to move up to get Jeanty. He’s most likely the projected the backside of the first round
@ I haven’t seen him fall past the broncos at 20 in any mock draft so far
Wow all the playoff teams are complete teams that pass and run well as well as play tuff defense up front that's crazy it takes a "team" why didn't we think of that?
Here’s my end of season rant: I still definitely think of the Vikings as a finesse team. I have been complaining about this since I discovered SKOR North in 2020. Compare recent versions of this team to the 2009 Vikings. That team was definitely not a finesse team and that team definitely could have won a Super Bowl. This Vikings team was probably very fortunate to even have made the playoffs. (Which seems odd since they won 14 games.) The Vikings faced the weak AFC South this year and got kind of lucky in that some of the teams they faced who were supposed to be good definitely weren’t. Exhibit A would have been the Jets. The Vikings need to seriously bulk up their interior offensive line and control games. They also need a serious anchor in the interior of the defensive line. Plus, the team got very lucky in that they only had a few major injuries over the course of the season. If not their lack of depth would have been seriously exposed. They need to draft far, far better or depth will become a huge problem in the next few years.
You need AT LEAST 2 iol and iDL in free agency. Theres no if ands or buts about it
In 3 out of 4 divisional games the team that had more rushing yards lost. Hot take. The ball moves faster through the air than on the ground. Under KOC Vikes are never gonna be a run heavy team and that’s a good thing. Added benefit is when teams don’t expect it you can have run chunk plays like Akers did who had 7.8 yards per play vs D. Henry 5.2 l
We learned how much more help this team needs to get clos(er), and how deficient the NFC Central remains. And that the playoffs are for men.
Focusing the team around Jefferson is the mistake. A wr didnt control or dominate any of theae playoff games that we saw this weekend. Trenches and run game that includes the qb made the difference.
Can make JJ the focus but not without a good running game. Imagine how good JJ would be if there was a threat of a running game
So we need a good OL and great RB to make our most expensive WR relevant? We need a QB who can be shifty and throw JJ 15 targets a game regardless of the walls are falling around him (like Burrow treats Chase).
That will change once JJ takes the helm. Just leadership skills and aura will shine and ultimately give him control of the team
This last weekend shows in spades that the best performance in the playoffs are the teams with solid, multi dimensional QB’s. Everyone knew that any pressure on Goff and he easily faultered. QB’s with any real weaknesses, gets exposed. That was true of Darnold, and why Cousins could never succeed in real competitive games. And I am absolutely looking forward to watching the Vikes next fall, keeping with KOC’s plan. KOC has given our family the most entertaining Vikings games in season 1 and this past season, 13 and 14 wins!
A lot of the QB issue leans on what JJ McCarthy has between the helmet. They guy is a football fanatic. He's got the entire playbook memorized by now, maybe better than KOC. Come training camp, JMac will be able to concentrate on his pre-snap reads, and his game-motion movements. He should be ready to play at game speed very quickly.
They need to establish the run AND fix their interior pass rush on the dline
You need an offensive line to run the ball.
We need to establish a solid OL
Look at all the playoff teams, generally, they all consist of solid OL that is consistent. We need to sign Trey Smith, and draft another OL in the draft. We need to get a stud RB too and then our offense would be very dynamic.
One thing I will say about the running game hot take I don't know if you guys notice but ever since Dalton Risner took over as the starting guard the running game went down. The running game wasn't as efficient as it was in previous weeks. Before Dalton Risner took over. I know Ed Ingram was so terrible at past protection but he was really good at block running.
Phil rocking the GoodGood
Im really wondering if part of our problem with guards is ALSO our coaching staff.
GIVE OUR FUTURE FRANCHISE QB THE SAME VR TRAINING TREATMENT JD IS GETTING
Definitely need a CB and RB but I think a DT and a G/C are more important. Draft some beef on the cheap. Need to get going on the trenches first. Can find a CB and RB in free agency or late.
The biggest problem with the running game has been the interior line issues that stem back before KOC took the job.
To be fair, you guys still all picked Stafford over Darnold.
I watched JJ's preseason game highlights on UA-cam ...granted its preseason so take it with a grain of salt. After watching Sam's play this year and his passing attack vs what JJ is going to bring in ..the passing game is in for a massive upgrade. Sam throws a great deep ball no doubt but how many times did he really hit a receiver in stride? The receivers and their catches had as much to do with Sam's numbers because a lot of them were making great adjustments on balls that weren't going to hit them in the hands. His short and mid range game his inaccuracy was even more glaring. Just watch that preseason game vs the Raiders and again ...yes its preseason but take note of the ball placement and how he hits receivers in stride. Get a reliable running game and this offense can truly explode next season.
Watch the JJ McCarthy 2024 "Career Highlights" video that's nearly 25 minutes long. He can make every throw, has pocket awareness, scrambling ability, and has wheels when he takes off.
JJ McCarthy is a giant unknown. if you are taking preseason games seriously youre beyond clueless. Darnold has his flaws but the chances of McCarthy ever putting together a season like Darnold just had is slim to none. McCarthy was carried by a running game in college and has never been asked to carry a team with his arm.
@@All22Jim Jaren Hall had a similar video.
@@califtom Can you tell me you don't know what you're watching without telling me you don't know what you're watching?
@@All22Jim you absolutely don’t know what you’re watching if you’re taking preseason football and highlight videos seriously.
Upgrading the iOL is a priority, Guards are #1 and then Center is #2.
It's not just that they need new guards in a center, it's also the type of player. The Vikings seem to always draft or pick up lineman that are not road graders. They get guys that are light on their feet. This needs to fundamentally change. We need big nasty OL. Enough with this crap. Also need RB and D line as well. Vikings off-season gonna be crazy.
Kwesi needs to establish a way to not draft busts. 😂
Ben Johnson is now new bear heand coach
I think DT in the 1st round and the best RB there after. Try get Montgomery from the Lions and Go all in for atleast 2 HIGHLY PAID IOL.
Montgomery isn't worth trading for.
Lions aren't trading Montgomery to a division rival thats absurd.
The Vikes need to find an O-Line Coach like the Eagles Jeff Stoutland. His best example of developing a O-Line left tackle from plain cloth is Jordan Mailata. Never played football (rugby was his game) but Stoutland and their front office saw that Mailata had the required athletic skills and equally, the drive to learn the game. And now the Eagles are set at LT for 10 years.
I've been saying this. You need an O-Line coach that knows what the hell they're doing
Draft a center, get a road grader right guard and try to get Cam to move to guard.
Curious...of the 4 teams left in the playoffs we have (2) Defensive HC's and (1) Ex O Line coach HC so why are we so hell bent on having an offensive master minded HC that calls plays?
TRENCHES! that’s it 💪🏻😂
And CB 😂
KOC probably did not feel compelled to go for it much this season considering that theVikings were playing with the lead so much of the time. He was not chasing points. He also probably felt more confident in the defense getting the ball back than he did in his offensive line converting. Sad but true.
They don't need to run the ball as much as pass they just need to be ABLE to run the ball when they need too and they need to be able to make adjustments game to game and in game. The issue with this team is they don't make adjustments and it's not because they don't want to it's because they can't. Get better from the inside out that's the key. But Vikings fan's have known this for years every year it's the same complaints about the O Line and D Line this isn't new it's getting comical
Going for it on 4th down is definitely a situational issue and its nerve wraccing i don't want to push towards this more
Daniels' has a better interior O-line as well.
Hire Boone to help out with the Viking O-Line.
The Vikings can not ignore our secondary. Not a lot of depth there and we have some DBs close to end of careers (Harrison, Gilmore).
"Congrats dude, you called doubled reverses" LOL
I dont agree about the 4th downs with you Phil. I dont think we had that many 4th down chances because we got so many 1st downs on downhills. Remember, we went 14-3. Get us the right stats. Think we were ok on 4th downs, although I wish we can go for it on 4th everytime we are 4th & 4 and under. Think we were ok.
I don't know if it is the front office or the coaching, but the Vikings spent 7 picks in the 1st three rounds between 2017 and 2022 on the OL And only 2 of them have panned out (Darrisaw and O'Neill). Elflien, Bradbury, Davis, Ingram, and Cleveland all ended up either being busts or not living up to their draft spot. And that doesn't count the multiple day 3 picks from 2015 to 2024 who never did anything good for the Vikings.
The best we can do in North Central Mo is Quick Trip. They are pretty good.
My Hot Take, Dan Campbell's tenure with the Lions will end very similar to the way Mike Zimmer's ended with the Vikings.
I wouldn't say that the Vikings absolutely NEED to adopt a more runcentric offense however it is very clear to me after watching these latest games that the Vikings are not physical enough up front and in general to be taken seriously in the playoffs
Jedric Wills from the Browns could be a buy low/big reward type. Could move him inside to guard and he could be insurance for Darrisaw if he's not ready week 1
Kevin O'Connell looked like he wants to keep Darnold in his press conference. This is why people are skeptical of his thought process.
Hey guys, here's what we learned over the weekend!
The Vikings scored 9 points against the Lions and the Rams for a combined 18 points, just awful!
The Commanders and Eagles scored 45 and 28 for a combined total of 73.
Really! WTH! 😳
If the Vikings are going to turn this around next season it starts with the HC and the QB!
Then they must address the other elephants in the room.
They are in this order . Center, Guard, Nose Tackle and CB!
This team can no longer put up with Bradbury at Center and the ongoing left or right guard situation.
They also need a big run stuffing interior DL who can plug the gap and then they need a guy who can actually cover man to man and shut it down!
The other thing we learned was just how bad our coaches were out schemed and out smarted.
This can't happen again, for goodness sake. 😮
I once heard Bill Belichick say that the Super Bowl against the Rams, was all about two words: Marshall Faulk.
I have a semi-interesting question that I would love to see explored.... there's this whole narrative right now around KOC's contract that he wants more control over personnel going into his next contract... fair... but how illuminating is the Engram/Resiner debate a part of this? On this show and others, there was a discussion about swapping the two weeks before it happened. I don't remember where I saw it, but I heard something in the grapevine that KOC wanted to make that change earlier, but something... IDK if it's KAM and his staff, the OL coaches, or Wes Phillips, and the O staff who held out that decision. Could this be an example of where this smoke is coming from?
Hey Macky you just proved why KOC is not a top coach in the NFL. Atleast Ben Johnson adjust and tried to move the ball when his Qb was off. What would KOC do oh yeah nothing absolutely nothing he would grimace on the side line as his Qb gets pummeled. KOC game calling the Wr are still running 15-20yds down the field. Great coaches adapt KOC and Judd exact words KOC is who he is he doesnt change which in game is exactly what he does and when your play calling is not working and you need an adjustment KOC is not your man. Exactly as Judd stated some guys are head coaches and some are coordinators. I think KOC in order to better the team needs to find an Offensive Coordinator. KOC cost us those last two games more then anyone. This weekend shows what happens when a coach has his players prepared and a game plan that works. The Offense especially against the Lions looked like crap not prepared and couldnt even get a TD. Jayden Daniel's wasnt sacked 9 times Macky and he wasnt running for his life. The Vikings Offense Sucked against the Lions and the Rams exploited it. KOC got out coached twice its 2022 all over again one and done. KOC didnt adjust or even try to adjust when his game plan has been figured out. Detroit had KOC offense figured out the defensive coordinator was sitting on the bench relaxing during the game and the Rams exploited it. I'm not saying to fire KOC but if I'm the Wilfs I'd be taking notes.
EVERY PLAYOFF WINNER RAN THE BALL 🏈 RAN THE BALL 🏈 and RAN THE BALL SOME MORE
Was on andrews not only did he drop that pass he had a fumble buffalo turned into points the previous drive
Context matters, weather has a factor and OB and oline matters
I agree with you 100% JUDD. Dan Cambell will never win a SB because he is all or nothing. He is NO X's and O's guy and the fact that both their Coordinators are gone, will make them the same old Lions. Especially after 2025 when their STUDD's price go up.
It will be nice when their fans go back into hibernation for a few more decades!
Yes Sam was awful but people focusing on just the QB are missing the forest through the trees. This team hasn’t had an effective running game in years. We’re not going deep in the playoffs until we do. Regardless who the QB is.
No way Jarrof Goff is that much above EVEN Darnold. I think JJ McCarthy is going to STUN the NFL community like Jaden Daniels, but Darnold isnt that much worse than Goff. He is a selfsabbotaging qb.
there's a reason the rams traded goof and then won a sb without him right away....goof is a post season pumpkin
Pretty happy lions are stuck with Goff for the foreseeable future. He’s going to regress next guarantee
bETTER establish some GUARDS and a CENTER, before we worry about the running back!!!
Expectations for KOC cook up a running game is insanely ignorant. Especially with Kwesi drafting and signing players. Sure it might look great against the Vikings defense and in the pre season. However expect it to fail when they get to the regular season. Spoiler alert bet huge on the Vikings win under next season . It's free money with the Vikings guaranteed to finish near the bottom of the NFL .
@electriccontrol7680 if we can draft an amazing running back we can still get guards and center in FA
@@seluciusPtolemyyayyy. You can see into the future!! Looks good on you.
@@1230cjones it is not so much a true talent, my friend . Rather it is a willingness to read road signs and not ignore the facts . Most of the Vikings media has convinced Vikings fans to stand behind a cow and expect a nice medium rare steak to fall out the back. Whilst the Vikings fans in reality are getting hit by B*ll Sh*t day after day and year after year . Funny how the Vikings media loves to give Kwesi credit for the 13-4 season in 2022 , where he inherited most of the players, whilst they constantly make excuses for his 2022 draft busts, now that we see how terrible they are. Now I have heard Vikings media calling JJ McCarthy a top 10 NFL QB after he played in part of his first pre season game and was removed from the active roster for the rest of the year. For the record let's look at the stats for Kwesi first round draft busts in the Vikings last playoff lose .
1. Lewis Cine - not seen on the field as even Kwesi gave up on this failure.
2. Jordan Addison - 3 catches for 29 yards while receiving the most targets on the Vikings team. Good for a WR4, but not worth a first round draft pick, and this was with the Rams trying to stop Justin Jefferson.
3. Dallas Turner - he assisted with 1 tackle.
4. JJ McCarthy - physically unable to perform QB activity.
Now if you want to go deeper into Kwesi drafts, you will only find more failure. The funny thing is that people committed to worshipping Kwesi always comment back what about Ivan Pace ? To which I reply, Yes what about him ? Clearly Kwesi didn't think he was worth a 7th round draft pick .
Becton seems like a good option but his injury history is concerning. That is partly why the jets cut him.
I hate to say it but yes i do want KOC replaced. Do i have an idea if who should replace him? Yes! The true offensive and defensive guru of football. Phil Mackey!
Vikings 5 - 10 last 25 years postseason. Need to learn to show up.
It’s so hard to take average run yards a game seriously. If your passing game is what helps you win, then who cares how many rushing yards you get? Obviously, you want to be able to run, but that stat alone doesn’t really mean anything. Kind of like defensive total yards against. Literally, the only stat that matters for the defense is how many points you let up per game.
Ravens, Eagles, and Commanders are the top 3 running teams in the NFL. Bucs, Packers, Lions, and Bills are top 10.
@@hunniebe6they all also have true top 10 QBs, aside from Packers.
Is this a hot take? Packers will never win a SB with Love.
@@SeekJesus27 That's not a hot take at all. At this point our fans would just be happy with us winning the division with Love.
That equals regular season wins, zero post season win. I guess if that’s your bar enjoy!
The theme of the offseason should be "trenches"
Running backs are deep in the draft this year, go get a good one, SKOL
Snow won that game for the Eagles.
Philly picked up Cine and he gonna be awesome for them next year
Defense was great all season, how many games were they ahead by a lot, just saying “go for it” is silly.
Do you guys forget that the Vikings Had AP and Delvin in their prime and still couldn’t do Shit. Our GM has put this franchise behind with his draft picks. They have to take a look at their front office. They a man who is going to be a great head coach for years. Listen to him! He needs offensive lineman and a solid nose tackle. Anyone can see that.
Not to mention the Titans with the best running back on the planet and couldn't make it work. Always need balance...good running backs should complement the passing game, not the other way around.
Someone should ask Mackey if he's Okay after HIS Lions were one and done
I think the lions played harder against us and were more concerned about their game with us. I think they thought the Rams were going to be an easy win. They also got too much rest! Who knows where each of us would be if we got the bye and they didn’t. Would we both still be one and done, or no? P..S. it almost seemed like the OC and DC in Detroit were thinking of their future HC gigs/💰more than the play-off game!
Im not in the kevin o connell firing camp. But phil, you're asking who would replace him? It's flores. DUH. the vikings have 2 good head coaches employed RIGHT NOW. If they got rid of kevin, there wouldn't be a search, brian flores would be the next head coach
Trey Smith was drafted in the 6th round too. Wild!
Because he had/has blood clots in his lungs. Teams were afraid to draft him.
Mackie - "I don't know that they will do(change) all three(new Gx2 & C)".
If that's the case, then they are not serious about winning in the playoffs.
We need to protect our QB a little more, we need to get a great run game going, and we need to use short quick inside passes on short third down conversions. There were so many times that we could have thrown a quick pass over the middle to gain the first down but we decide to throw a weird out route. Now it worked quite a bit but KOCs play calling is weird at times and doesnt make sense.
It’s not the running game it’s the calls not to run the ball and try to throw the ball after a couple of runs don’t work. You have to keep the run game going. SKOL VIKINGS
No matter what the CAN learn, they WILL not learn, as always.
How many drives were extended by great QB scrambles? The defense was otherwise great, but they lost contain of the QB?
because they have mahomes, kelce, andy reid, a good defense, or and these striped shirt fellas spotting them 10-14 points every single effin game.
I’ve been saying that all god damn year.
Interior O line ...
You could clearly see the commanders outcoached the lions by a landslide. The Vikings got outcoached by the lions. There’s levels to this shit dude. The gameplan for Daniel’s made it impossible for him to mess it up. Helps he’s a generational qb but the amount of little drops over the middle of the field when we never saw that from the Vikings say something
Darnold had plenty of open receivers against the Lions. KOC schemed up plenty of TDs in the redzone. The QB would either miss or not throw it. It could have easily been a win if Darnold made the throws.
Go out and sign Ty Johnson or Justice Hill both are young and have juice and won’t break the bank ! Come up big in playoffs. What more could you want. Thanks Aaron Jones and Cam Akers but time to move on. Both have no more tread on the tires!
Trade down, Grab a RB in RD 2 a G in Rd 3 ( should have a comp), and then CB and others. Try and resign Shaq and Murphy. Then fill gaps in FA this year.
In one of Colin Cowherd’s weekend podcasts on UA-cam he held up the pages of HAND NOTES that he says he always takes
Best Gatorade flavors snake draft
What about this??? The Vikings run with JJ McCarthy as QB1 in 25, letting Sand Darnold & Daniel Jones walk and sign either Teddy Bridgewater or Joe Flacco as his backup
Ben Johnson of the Chicago Bears just got a huge contract. Tell me what the hell are the Vikings waiting for to sign. If they don't sign a sign him in the next couple of weeks of before the Super Bowl, he will leave Minneasota and then Minnesota will be screwed like usual
Rams RT Guard opened the door on Two straight plays that killed Stafford to finish the game.....
Koc should give up play calling and just coach
If Spielman was still the GM, Jurgens and Rouse would be the starting guards in 2025 and trade back and draft a tight end😂😂
How is it that the refs don't get accounted for against KC's salary cap is ridiculous.
Y'all can be excited about McCarthy but anyone thinking he'll approach Daniels' level of play, especially as a 1st year starter, is delusional.
Watching Boone tell us what's wrong with guard techniques why can't our coaches fix that?
You think Lamar Jackson is a franchise QB? He can't win in the playoffs. Most overrated QB in the league.
You know the difference between us and the lions that kid hit receivers that Sam didn't
Wasn’t wanting to establish the run one of the things Zimmer got fired for? I know he was a jerk but he was right about needing to run. We have to overhaul this OL and team them to be more physical. The current group gets their asses handed to them way too often ( looking at you Bradbury)
Watching hear playoff games make me realize how weak our playbook is
