    I really appreciate your reviews of the nonfiction! A few were already on my TBR and it’s good to know more about what to expect

    Ugh it’s rough when the second half of a book doesn’t hold up to the first half. Loved hearing your thought on Disappearing Earth. Very excited about Bear by Julia Phillips too!

    I totally get what you mean when books are depressing in a draining way that offers no relief or emotional redemption. Shuggie Bain was like that for me. Loved the Open Up talk. I read Thomas Morris's last short story collection so wanted to know more about his latest one. The seahorse one doesn't sound convincing at all haha.

    I read Stolen in 2022, and it was one of my favourites of the year. But I didn't know there was going to be a series. I paused the video and went straight to the national library webpage where I found that the Norwegian translation has just been released. So I ordered a copy to my local library from the national depot library. Will hopefully get the book next week. Thank you!

    My first 5 star of the year was Poor Deer by Claire Oshetsky. It’s about a young girl, and I bet you would love it.

    I wonder if 15 Decembers mentioned the Irish connections of the Brontës. Their father came from Co.Down and Charolette? married and moved to just outside Dublin. There’s a great documentary about the Brontes on BBC iPlayer presented by the daughter of Ciaran Hinds.

    Currently reading the Swedish version of Stolen and it’s taking me long because the font size is so tiny 😭 also, I agree that there are complex topics about the Sami people that the author doesn’t go deep into, but I do think that one of the reasons is that the book is aimed to Swedish people who are more familiar with the whole story, I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes in the second part. Also fun fact: Frozen 2 is based on a real story, a confrontation between the Sami people and the Norwegian state in the late 20th century (they even thank them in the credits). I remember watching the film and thinking that I already knew the story

      Sorry if I didn't explain myself very well but what I meant was that the issues were over explained so if anything I thought they were made too simple for non Swedish readers. I didn't know that about Frozen - that is interesting!

    So many good books! I think I liked 15 wild Decembers a bit more. I said 'there's little new in it that we've not seen in news articles like from the guardian'. Then I heard your comment about non-fic and fiction and I thought- or I could have said something closer to that, much clearer. The thing is, i didn't know that's what i was trying to say till you said it, 😂.
    Hadn't heard of Stolen or the series, or Disappearing Earth 😮
    Definitely picking up In Limbo, it's been a while since I read a graphic novel.

    Not books, but I keep seeing similar reviews of that Emily Bronte book, so.....The film Emily is a great fictionalised telling of Bronte's life, and specifically the creation of Wuthering Heights. Or for a more grounded telling of the sister's lives, To Walk Invisible, written and directed by Sally Wainwright, is very good and way more rooted in facts.

    Your description of Disappearing Earth reminded me of Reservoir 13, are there any similarities because I loved that one?

    • @MercysBookishMusings
      @MercysBookishMusings  4 місяці тому

      Yes, definitely. Reservoir 13 is much more focused on nature writing though whereas Disappearing Earth is more focused on the characters.

    I’ve added lots of these to my wish list. I didn’t get on with three hours, firstly I couldn’t believe it was an English boarding school or all the snow, and I didn’t like those stereotypical characters she played with.

    Learned by Heart prompted such an intense discussion between my partner and I. Bc I enjoyed the book, but I think it was by accident lol. I read it as a study in class and race, why Anne was able to prosperously live life as a lesbian, and why Eliza was institutionalized instead. I don’t know if this was Emma Donoghue’s intentions, her essay that follows the story is filled with adoration for Anne Lister, leaving me to assume that she was less sympathetic to Eliza’s societal trappings. Was Donoghue unconsciously biased toward Anne? Did she intend to frame Eliza’s struggles this way? Who knows lol. I don’t think I’d recommend the book but I do intend to purchase it for my own library just for the meta conversation it inspired.

    I think that policing book would have left me confused and unsettled with the contrast in commentary 🤔
