  • Mock-up of leg prosthesis. This includes a Socket, Knee, and Foot. The knee broke while testing because I used wood. Final Knee Prototype will be out of HTPE and will not break like this.
(Disclaimer: This was a class assignment for Industrial Design. Not intended for actual use. The purpose was to come up with ideas of potential low-cost solutions for leg prosthetics)

Interesting concept. To simplify the foot and ankle, you could get away with a Solid Ankle Cushioned-Heel type of design where the ankle doesn't move and the heel is cushioned. Better yet, curving the foot slightly could also help with foot rollover during stance phase.

AT LEAST ADD DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. You've got a great idea. Heres a tip, the weight load of a foot is actually higher when it impacts. A man who weighs 150 lbs hits on about 175lbs give or take when the heel lands the weight is then transfers to the toe. So the pressure peaks at 175 briefly and then returns to 150. But also just for a laugh I dare you to first count off the # of steps you take in an avg day. The answer will shock you (Because you have 2 legs and normally there's no logical reason for it) but for an amputee life span of the foot is the most important. The amount you walk puts a lot wear and tear and even w/ today's tech they still last an avg of 3-10 years it your really lucky and don't run on it or any thing like that. These things are what you think about when materials are selected. You've got a great mechanical aptitude and I want to see you try again with the same
knowledge and advice that the "pro's" have. And with an amputee to help, you'll have the same advantages. You will no doubt grasp all of this and I don't think I need to give you the dumb down version. I cant wait to see what you could build next. The truth is most of the real materials aren't very expensive here in the states and the high price is mark up. F**ked up health care and we really need them so $ = opportunism. You can be the prosthetist of the future, putting health of patient before profit!
The tried and true materials are
aluminum_steel_titanium_ "" Nitride_carbon fiber_fiberglass_plastics(high order space age). Some of these are affordable.
Im a 20 year below the knee r leg amputee, and I hope to see what you'll do next (preferably with out 1 arm behind your back)
