The High Standard company only made on .45 caliber pistol, and it was an improvement on the Grant Hammond pistol tested by the US military during World War One. After his gun's rejection by the military, it appears that Grant Hammond took the design to his friend "Gus" Swebelius who ran High Standard, to see if they could make it into a viable commercial product. The locking system was changed a bit and this prototype was made, but development and production ended there.

The Nazis turned all of Europe upside down and shook it until everything valuable fell out of its pockets. Cry me a river about American “looting”. If any of these prototype guns were returned to their “rightful owners” they’d most likely be destroyed anyway.

I’m chill. I just think that the relatively small scale of looting by American troops is probably a fair trade for the Allies keeping the cultural heritage of Europe from being displayed in the Fuhrermuseum (what cultural objects were left after all the ones made by the “wrong people” had been burned anyway).

I just noticed the legendary fireplace is completely clean, no soot anywhere. Theory: It's actually a fake fireplace Ian carries around in a suitcase when filming extremely rare pistols.

@@shawnr771 This was intended as a military-style arm, though. Contrary to some of the more overheated WWI propaganda, soldiers on the Western Front were not actually eating each other. :)

The United States was much more rural then.
A higher percentage of persons grew up hunting game daily to eat. They might only have a single shot rifle or shotgun. They miss they might not eat that day.

That said, I doubt the sort of marksmanship tradition you're talking about translated very well to large-frame semiautomatic handguns, which very few of those guys had probably even seen before they got to Basic.
The profile reminds me very much of the AutoMag pistol.

Great video as always! Given the size, I can understand the US govt turning it down. Also, automatic ejection of the empty magasine really does not sound like a military contract friendly feature. Sounds super operator, but the logistics/budget department would have nightmares about fields covered in dropped mags GIs forgot to pick up! :D
The ideal American firearm of the late 19th and early 20th century: Able to bring down a buffalo, by bludgeoning if necessary.

Beautiful gun. I can see Hi Standard must have really liked that grip and overall profile. Their .22's look just like it.
I've read that the similarity of the grip angle to the 1911 was one of the main reasons their .22s were adopted as training pistols. If there's any truth to that, I can understand why they would have wanted to make their .45 with a similar profile. My grandpa's model B doesn't feel much like a 1911 in my hands, but then I haven't handled any other .22s from that time period. They did make beautiful guns. With their bluing, they almost look like they were carved out of some semiprecious stone rather than made of metal.

Edit: I am well aware that the internals are far different then that of a luger; I was speaking purely from a visual standpoint. Although come to think of it, it does share more of a resemblance with a nambu....

@@JippaJ The resemblance is barely skin deep. A real Luger is toggle locked rather than having this tilting / falling locking block.
I see what you mean, Lucas. It has that classic single-hand grip and the long uncovered barrel, but a prominent slide in place of the toggle.

My father had a couple High Standards in his collection; both excellent guns that were reasonably well made and affordable. It was the Hi-Point of its time.
Only two known to exist, so obviously one is at the fireplace collection.
I kinda wish we would have some modern pistol options with exposed barrels and minimal/internal slides. They have a class about them
The looks remind me of that crazy hairdryer-style magazine fed revolver with the triangular rounds.

@@smokeydops no, it's not. If you watch a lot of the "fireplace" videos, you can see the various elements move relative to the camera. If it's a set, it's an actual physical set, not green screen. But I suspect that it's just the fireplace guys den.

Push a pin into the hole under the missing screw and see what it does. My guess is it's an automatic magazine release and its triggered by some little piece of metal in that groove that moves when the last round is shot and the magazine button is all the way up.

This pistol reminds me of the much later .44 AutoMag, which in itself looks like a design High Standard might have developed or influenced.
Ian while you were disassembling the gun my mind flashed back to taking down my old Ruger Mark 1, and I thought I could smell solvent and gun oil! Strange the way the mind works, huh! That or I'm just getting oll! Dave from Kansas
If they’d adopted this instead of the 1911 we’d probably still love it today too. It’s a big impressive old thing. Nice simple mechanism. Pretty sure the rear sight issue would have been dealt with had it been in service. The channel that just keeps on surprising us with these gems!

My grandfather has a .22 targer pistol from them, still trying to find ammo it can cycle consistantly. We can only really get Augila and some federal to work.
@@grugg3108 after 40 years, my favorite starting jamming a lot.... I spent hours trying to figure out what went wrong with it when I finally noticed the magazine was packed full of gunpowder residue. Once I took the mags apart and cleaned them up, back to flawless functioning.... Now I clean mags once in a while also.😁 Not that I'm saying that's your problem, but it's worth checking....
that one is a Supermatic with barrel weights and beautiful engraving over all of it.

And... I am pretty sure that one of the “parts” that is missing is a “screw/bolt,” given the hole is countersunk.

Kind of reminds me of the lewis short recoil pistol Ian reviewed years ago at least in the raising locking block that secures the end of the bolt.
I bet that missing piece is part of the auto mag eject mechanism. When the last round is chambered, that button on the follower interacts with whatever piece is missing to drop the mag when the slide goes back again.
*_Last shot mag eject_* also tells the bad guy that you are out! Not sure I like that except at a range when no one is firing back... ;-P
It would be so cool if automatic magazine ejection and dropping of the slide upon insertion of a loaded magazine were still features in modern pistols
That missing piece looks like it could be a magazine safety or disconnect. Or possibly a last round hold open It seems that it would have pushed down the mag follower and prevented the rounds from getting to the feed lips. Or the follower tab could have hit a piece to hold open the bolt

Yeah, that thing looks big even just sitting on the table. ;-) Very much in the top end of practical service pistol, much bigger, just add a stock and be done with it...
For some reason, I think the cut away isn't actually a slide release, but rather assists in automatically ejecting the magazine (using the loading button on the magazine push it slightly out of mag well). Then, somehow, one can toggle that ability for automatically releasing the magazine but pushing the missing component in and out of that slot

Ian, could you display black guns on a lighter background? It is hard to see black against black.
If something was to catch on the magazine button at the top of the follower's travel that could push the magazine out. At least it looks that way to me.
And it would make more sense if the magazine drop mechanism was incorporated into the slide lock as well. I don't think many would like the magazine falling out as the last round is chambered like a Mannlicher en-bloc charger.
I wish I standard had made their 22 pistol that easy to disassemble and reassemble.
I wouldn't trust that rear sight to hold in the bolt. Not in .45 , anyway.

Looking at that cut-out, I wonder if there's a reason for the extra-large button on the magazine follower - perhaps the missing parts on the receiver interacted with that button? Maybe whatever automatic hold open/magazine ejection/coffee maker functionality was triggered by the follower button reaching the top?

I've always wondered why more magazines besides .22 don't have the knobs along the sides to assist with loading...the knob(s) could also be used, as I assume it was on this gun, to auto-eject the magazine when the follower reaches the top.
At 7:50 there's a pretty good view of the slot and mounting space for whatever it was that might have been mounted on the right hand side. It looks an awful lot like it may have been a lever, fixed at the front with a screw and floating in the rear, for engaging the magazine button while it was in the pistol. WHY anyone would want to do that is beyond my comprehension.
Edit: ffs, if that *is* what it was, that would make the damn thing a magazine cut-off lever, disengaging the follower so it could only fire the round in the chamber and wouldn't automatically load the next cartridge.

This thing is cool. One of those guns I'd like to see modernized with a double stack.
To be precise, the Navy accepted the M53 in 1918. They were negotiating for production, but instead chose to give Remington a contract for the 1911. The M53 had lower recoil, fewer parts, and was more reliable. It was also cool looking, if that matters.

I'll bet the missing component was actuated by the magazine slider button and was probably an "empty magazine" hold open.

It looks like the magazine button would push up on the missing piece when the magazine is empty, which does seem to indicate the missing piece is a slide stop
I am a great fan of Hi-Standard "Style" It's a pity that they didn't scale that pistol down a little and produce it in 9X19 !
I believe that this firearm did have an "empty magazine drop" mechanism. The follower appears to have protruded through when empty, thus tripping some sort of lever that kind of slots in where that part is missing. This would contradict your opinion that it was merely a slide release, but we may never know lol.
That would make an excellent Star Wars prop...

That missing peace looks like it did something after the magazine was empty. The big button on the side looks like it would have actuated the missing peice after you had fired your last shot, maybe it was meant to be some kind of slide lock?
