I'm on a mission to learn this song and play it perfectly, so thank you for this! It really shows off your prowess but more importantly it highlights just how freaking brilliant Opeth is. The guitars on this are SO creative and unique. Akerfeldt is a music genius. No, no; he's a god.
Interestingly, if you listen to the isolated tracks from the surround mix of Watershed, one of the guitar tracks plays an E (b5)maj7 instead of just E(b5). To put it in tablature, one guitar plays 0-1-2-x-x-x- and the other plays 0-1-1-x-x-x. I always wondered why I couldn't make it sound quite as dissonant as the recording, but now I know it's because I need another guitarist to play the major seventh!
Thanks, Dave! I’m a guitar teacher as well as the frontman for Turrigenous, and I’m constantly doing my own transcriptions for students (trying to be as accurate as possible, no matter what). Ghost of Perdition coming tomorrow! -Greg
Greg was a teacher of mine when was younger, he's great at what he does. I also got a used Turrigenous CD from a record store in Binghamton without even realizing at first haha
It would be amazing if you could continue this series. Best opeth lessons and tabs that I've seen, really helped with my learning. Would be happy with any opeth track of your choosing.
Greg, you are my hero. I have stumbled upon your channel after having used tons of really shitty tabs. Your tab and thorough explanation is absolutely heroic. Many thanks from the Netherlands, subbed for life.
Thank you so much for making this!! If you happen to have time and energy, it would be awesome if you made more of these! Subscribed and heading to buy some Turrigenous's merch!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. I will have some more heavy music lessons soon, and eventually more Opeth. Hope you enjoy our originals as well!
DUDE! You're a total boss, thanks so much! I just started picking through this song the other day and this video and tab are incredibly helpful! I love this song and it's wayyy out of my comfort zone. I'm stoked to play these riffs eh!
My fav song by them!! Well Forest of October is my number one but this is up there lol thanks for this! I don’t even play guitar sadly but I really enjoyed this ^.^ your play through omg ! *drools*
Probably the part I’m calling the “clean break”. By itself it’s an ok riff, but in the context of the song it’s totally brilliant. The E7 riff is definitely a close contender, though.
Thanks! Believe it or not, the PRS is a huge amount of the tone. While I have a Black Star Ht1 for listening as I play, you’re hearing the Ampire plugin included with the Studio One DAW. It’s pretty basic in terms of features, but the sounds are solid.
@@TurrigenousOfficial I use Ableton myself. So it's good to know I might be able to save on physical pedals. I guess I'll just have to buy that PRS I have my eye on :)
@@TurrigenousOfficialJust watching this again and I can't believe I didn't notice you're wearing a t-shirt from the Quays Bar in Galway, Ireland. I'm from Galway! Great video dude!
While I'm not a huge fan of EMGs, you can usually get closer to the mark just by lowering the distortion on whatever amp you're going into. I find plugins a little more touchy, though, so that may be tougher.
No one teaches Opeth. Thank you so much, subscribed!
There actually is an older video of Mikael and Fredrik going through the song, but not in this much detail
There's another dude on here called "eezerian" who gives a few tab-lessons. Bad audio quality, but good instructions

He perfected the art of progressive death metal
now 7 months later you perfected it?
Did you learn it
51:43 me watching how to play Opeth and not being a guitarist. I don't know what I'm doing here, but man, THAT'S TERRIFIC
wig went flying

Fishbone Mash nice! I never would’ve caught that
Great tutorial! Just realised I'm a bassist, so the fact I'm here says something.
Great video! One of the heaviest songs in Standard tuning
Amazing lesson, very accurate, they should hire you to tab their stuff for an official book or something...

I love your delivery and pace. thank you for this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent breakdown on this song. Thanks for putting this up!
You are the chilly dude teacher that’s accurate as hell and funny as well!
Great 👍🏼 subscribed
Thanks! I’m trying to be accurate as possible. Not trying to be funny, though...

This is awesome man thank you
Thank you very much sir! Hope you breakdown more Opeth songs, like the lotus eater!!!
As soon as we're done with guitars on our album and out of the studio, you got it!
Willian souza; I’ll second that!!
TurringenousOfficial, a video covering The Lotus Eater would be much appreciated.
Or Ghost of Perdition maybe...?

This is SICK you deserve more views
Your guitar tone is perfect, whats your setup? Also, thanks for the great tutorial
To listen back I was using the little Blackstar, but just using my DAW's amp plugin for the video mix. Of course, using a PRS never hurts ;-)
thank you mate! It´s beautiful to finally be able to play this
As someone already wrote...,no one teaches Opeth,,,thanks man, would like some more in future ,Opeth of course, and little slowler for us beginners lol🤗
You're welcome!
Classic Opeth is still on my radar, although we have some lessons coming from other bands...
Been messing around with the riff and song. Just great. Though doing it on a 509. Cheers.
There is so much wisdom in this lesson i can write a book
Thanks for this! Please do post more opeth tutorials. Really appreciate it :)
Great lesson, thanks a ton! I'm sure this takes some work on your part but more Opeth would be greatly appreciated.
Michael Sinclair sure! Any particular favorites? I have a few in mind, but please let me know!
TurrigenousOfficial well for me serenity painted death is one of my favorite songs ever but I’ll be cool with anything to be honest!
That PRS is so epic
this is amazing thanks
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thank you so much for this man
Ghost of Perdition Lensso please!
Agreed! That would be amazing. One of my favourite Opeth tracks!
It’s coming tomorrow. Sorry for the wait 😁
Great job brother 👌
Standard tuning can't be heavy.
Opeth: Hold my beer
Amazing job!
one part is played differently but its such a good lesson thanks man.
38:07 E7 riff is amazing. what is your favorite part of this song ?
Probably the part I’m calling the “clean break”. By itself it’s an ok riff, but in the context of the song it’s totally brilliant. The E7 riff is definitely a close contender, though.
More Opeth please!
liked and subscribed man
You've got the tone spot on! Any explanation on what your setup is (other than the lovely PRS) :) Pedals, EQing, etc...

Great video dude!
Please do a tutorial on lotus eater also
great guitar and great tone! cant really play this song with my emgs, sounds over produced and not as organic as passive pickups
While I'm not a huge fan of EMGs, you can usually get closer to the mark just by lowering the distortion on whatever amp you're going into. I find plugins a little more touchy, though, so that may be tougher.
still can't nail that fast passage in the solo haha.
You got this! Slow down, metronome, and speed it up 🤘🏻
What's your go-to pick and string gauge combination?
In standard tuning I use tens. For electric guitar I use Jazz III XL. They’re essentially the perfect shape; not too rounded, not too pointy
idk why am I watching this when I don't have any guitar
🤣 Hope you enjoyed it!
I dont know why im watching this i have to idea how to play guitar lmao
🤣
pls teach ghost of perdition?
Check back tomorrow. Sorry for the wait 😁
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Standard tuning?
Yes it is ...it sounds like d but it’s e 😅
How can someone compose this...inhuman writing
Tabs or it didn't happen. Also, first.
Also, for real, your tone is so freaking spot on its stupid.
standard tuning?
Yes
