    I looked at that middle row not moving as a feature that allowed me to store a different product on the middle shelf. 2:1 Stewed tomatoes to Rotel

    I am actually a Shelf Reliance Independent Consultant and was browsing videos on the Cansolidator when I found this review. Great job. I completely agree with the deal breaker on the FIFO - as soon as you showed it, I wondered about that issue. Without know where you bought your Cansolidator from, I wanted to recommend checking out the website of an Independent Consultant because you can get them for less than other sites (abt $20 for the Cansolidator Pantry).

    I got the mini can tracker from The ready store. It only has a bottom and feeds from the top, no middle row. However if you have noticed, it takes up more room than placing the cans sitting on end side by side. So it takes up more room on a shelf than you can place different cans of food side side.

    I just bought the Panty Plus and am promptly returning it. The snaps didn't snap, the thing was falling apart. Once you put in a snap, it is not easy to disassemble. I loved the idea. It would have worked great, but I don't have the confidence it would hold up. It is a total pain to assemble and the size ends up being odd.

    We are HUGE fans of Shelf Reliance. We have 4 of their 72' racks in our basement. Each of them allows us to store/rotate cans as small as tuna/chicken up to #10 cans. We're going to order one of the Pantry Plus Cansolidators for our kitchen pantry.

    Always thought it was ironic that the FIFO brand, which stands for First In First Out, is the can rotator that doesn’t follow first in first out.

    Just put a piece of cardboard in the bottom of the top run to block the cans on top going down first!! Then when the middle run is empty just pull out the cardboard a little to allow the top row of cans to roll down!!

    I have the cansolidators, both the small and the larger ones. I love them. The only thing I dont care for is the steep price but, you get what you pay for. It's easier to put together with a rubber mallet to tap the pieces together.

    Actually I'm not sure. I know they have multiple size connector rods to accommodate at least 2 sizes. They may make them for the longer cans too.
    You are right, that is a big deal, since many bean, soup, etc cans are the larger size. That's why I mentioned the customize-ability of the shelf-reliance model.

    I just purchased a fifo mini can rack. It is only 2 rows high so it rotates. I wish fifo would sell the spacers separate, I would like a little more flexibility and use shorter size cans.

    A simple solution on the one that the middle level doesn't rotate through until last, would be to only restock when that second level is empty, then both upper levels have the same expiration date.

    Dents are a problem because they can cause tiny breaks in the airtight seal, where bacteria and oxygen can get it and ruin the food.
    as far as 'poison' the only thing I have heard is that some cans have some kind of plastic of polymer material lining the inside that may contain BPEs.

    why don't you just used the "middle storage" space (4 cans?) for storing items that are completely different? if they mix later in time you can just move it back to the middle. There are some things that you don't store by the dozen right? Fifo should build a little insert that fits into the middle row and has a stopper and a way to pull out the 4 cans for easy rotation of those 4 cans. I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to makes something to do this job though. If anyone has figured out a way to do this or has any tips please comment here with the link or info so I will be notified. Thanks in advance.

    But even if put in cabin space, no more need to reach in back BS...

    @theeastwatch
    Yes if you are planning on taking canned foods with you in a 'bug out' or evacuation scenario, then these types of can rotators are not ideal. They can't really be moved while full, unless you move the entire shelf.
    Personally I am including much if any canned food as part of a bug-out plan. It is too heavy and difficult to transport. I am sticking with dry goods, MREs, etc if I have to leave quickly.

  • @MrsDocWho

    Love the info you provide. One part you left out (????) that was the deal breaker for me (unless I am missing something.) I just bought the FIFO Can Tracker system and it doesn't seem to fit the larger soup cans, Progresso, Chunkey, etc. which is what I have a LOT of and was looking to consolidate. If I had realized that I would have went with the other brand......unless you know of a way I can make those fit in the FIFO??

    Thanks for the video on these. I bought 3 of the large consolidators based on this. I did have one question though. Were you ever able to get 6 rows for normal sized cans as they show in their marketing? I can only get 5 rows for normal sized cans, and a 6th smaller row for small cans, like tomato paste, or tuna cans if i make that last row even smaller.

    Nice video. Thanks for the comparison. Very useful. But what I am really curious to know is what in the world is a can of boiled peanuts used for? Is it for cooking? I am being serious. We don't have anything like that in Wyoming. I have never heard of boiled peanuts before. And I am originally from the south east (though it has been 35 years now.) Are they wet inside or are they dry? What can or do you do with them? Is it a snack food? It is fun running into something I have never heard of before.

    I considered getting can rotators initially, but then I started paying attention to best-by dates on items that I repetitively purchased on different months. As it turns out, can rotators do not truly rotate your food by best by date, but only purchase date which is completely valueless when true food rotation is the goal. Your food supply is too important to be playing around with semantics. Instead of calling them "can rotators", for the value they provide and the function they perform, they should correctly be called "can holders". Some people that promote can rotator use are knowingly selling you a product that sounds really neat in theory, but in reality, all they do is hold cans in a disorganized and functionless fashion. The purchase date doesn't mean a thing when doing true rotation to achieve the longest shelf life of your food supply. That's important. I have found time and time again, at different stores, that you can buy a can of beans one month and it will have the best by date shown. However, you can go to that store and buy the same can of beans a month or two later, but the best by date will expire many months BEFORE the date on the first can you purchased, thereby negating the value of using can rotators. Check it out. You'll see. Many products are like that. I do my food storage rotation based on best by date spreadsheets. That's how I discovered that can rotators are only eye-appealing "stuff" that cost a lot of money and don't truly rotate your canned foods.
    In addition, I believe that stores that sell you products with best by dates scenarios such as this situation, are getting product from stores that can't sell it and are putting it on their shelves to sell to us. No one can tell how long it sat in a truck in the summer heat waiting to be transferred to another store.

      *****
      From things I've heard people say, I don't think that everyone is aware of it. We use cans from our storage on a regular basis, almost daily. Maybe that's why I do it the way I do and it suits me so well. Ultimately, the most important thing is that people build some kind of food storage regardless of what they store it on or in. I wish everyone would find a way that suits them and builds up their food supply. That's what I'd really like to see! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @RidiculouslyRandy
      @RidiculouslyRandy 5 років тому +1

      Bob, the storage/rotation problem your addressing has little to do with the unit itself. People simply need to pay attention to the dates on the cans when they purchase them. If one stores a great number of cans then comparing new entries to existing storage dates will put the oldest cans first. On a different note, although some canned food does eat better earlier in its canned life, canned food won't expire. I only say this for the purpose of long term storage. Many people rotate out their "expired" cans however you'd be wise to simply move them into deep storage where they may keep someone alive should the shf (as many preppers are storing for). Mushy peas are better than no peas.
