this man creates the most in-depth and truly riveting NASCAR content on this whole platform. the focus on detail and laying it all out for retention is some incredible stuff. you're a legend, Brock. I can always sense the passion you put into everything. thanks, man. hope all who read this have a nice night!
Thank you so much - I really appreciate that. It pleases me that this series in particular has become so popular. Good news is there's more on the way.
Great video Brock remember Larry Gunselman started another cup series team in 2009 the number was 64 and they made 52 starts until 2012 with several drivers including Dave Blaney Todd Bodine and Derrike Cope.
You are incredible, Brock. Amazing storytelling from start to finish, particularly how it all came full circle at the end. Loved the Ashlea Albertson tribute at the end as well.
I always have had a soft spot in my heart for Lucas Oil, and I always will. They sponsored my local sprint car series, the Empire Super Sprints (Central New Yorkers stand up) for decades. They just pulled out finally last year. In fact, they’ve been such a mainstay, the announcer for them has a pot going where every time he refers to them as the Lucas Oil ESS, he adds a dollar to the pot. I think he’s going on 60 or 70 bucks at this point, not sure of the exact number but I think it’s in that ballpark. They’ve always been a sponsor of any kind of great racing almost anywhere
I was at that Auto Club race, flew all the way from Michigan to be there. It was definitely an important piece of NASCAR history, and, I was lucky enough to meet you at the merch stand in the infield. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me and let me grab a picture with you, you're one of my biggest inspirations for NASCAR video essays. Cheers. Great video as always. Auto Club race in 2023 was the track where KFB hoisted his first Cup win in '05, and it becmae the first track for him to win at with three different teams. It was his first win for RCR in his 2nd start, and it broke his and Kurt's tie with Bobby and Donnie Allison to be the winningest brothers in NASCAR history. It was also the track that saw KFB win his 200th national-series race four years prior, and is a track that he's had huge success at throughout his entire career. With it being the last race on the 2 mile configuration and maybe the last race ever at Auto Club, I couldn't think of a better way to put a bow on said history book.
You're very welcome, Aaron - it was a pleasure to see you at Fontana! Glad that race ended up tying so perfectly into this story. Another way to remember all that craziness for sure.
I grew up in Independence where the two missing children on the car, Sam and Lindsey Porter were from. They were found two years later in a shallow grave in the woods a few miles outside town. Very sad.
I just discovered this series and I found it interesting because I've always been fascinated by the guys the racing media doesn't always cover, whether in NASCAR, IndyCar, F1 or whatever. I'm looking forward to further episodes.
This is a great episode! I always like your work because you do a great job. It's very rare that I listen to something that has so much information, I can't compute it all. I have to rewind sometimes. That saying a lot because most UA-camrs need to be played at 1.5x to be half the speed of you. Lots of credit here to the Edwards family and Lucas oil for supporting roles.
This was incredible, and this whole series has been a nostalgia rush for me. I was a kid who loved everything and anything to do with auto racing, but my heart was always with guys like Morgan Shepherd, Todd Bodine, Larry Gunselman, and their brethren. As a kid from a small town removed from the hotbed of racing, their small operations made me believe I could hit the track one day. Even though life didn’t take me that way, I still have that affinity for them all.
BROCK BEARD, an absolute legend!!!! Again, thank you, very much!! We really appeeciate these videos, i learn most of what i know as far as history goes, from you sir..
Maaaannnnn I miss my dad taking me to Tri city raceway when I was a kid. Not sure what happened out why it was cut, crowd was packed every time. Or maybe it died after the golden age of nascar… I should look it up
If you haven't already I don't know how NASCAR hasn't approached you to work with you. The work you're putting in for this sport is astounding. The knowledge I'm learning about backmarkers that never get talked about but quite frankly have a better story than the guys up front.
If you’re curious why Bill Elliott brought his team back, it was due to a sponsorship conflict: Bill has a personal sponsorship with Coke, while Evernham had Mtn Dew (owned by Pepsi) as an associate sponsor. This is also why if you ever see graphics from this time, the “9” is always shown in a different font than the usual style seen on Evernham’s cars.
Hi Brock! I'm currently binging through the Rise of the Field Filler series, and I noticed that Episode 10 is not available? I am from Australia and the youtube playlist for the series skips Episode 10 (so Episode 9 Score Motorsports and Episode 10.5 the Nextel Open are available). Just wanted to make sure I'm not going crazy.
Hi there - thanks for watching! Episode 10 has been postponed indefinitely, pending a follow-up interview to complete the script. I didn't want that wait to hold up the series.
Funny that he ran car #37 early in his career; flash forward to 2011 when he bought the #37 Front Row Motorsports Cup team and ran it instead of the #64...
@@LASTCARonBROCK There is more to that story. In 97 both Cat and John Deere entered the Cup series. All those two sponsors cared about was beating each other. At Sonoma both cars missed the race and I got in. Dirk Stephens who I knew from West Coast racing was team manager for Buzz McCall the owner of the Cat team. Buzz was and still is a big road course racer. They came to me and said they had 250 people in a hospitality suite up on the hill and they had to have a car in the race or they had to give Cat some of their money back. We did the deal as our West Team was struggling for money to stay in business. The only bad thing for me personally was part of the deal was to let David Green drive the car the second half of the race to get some road course experience. I wasn’t very happy about that. I was a pretty good road racer and had moved up into the top 15 by halfway and the car was handling good. They kept telling me on the radio i needed to come in and turn the car over to David. I ran it until the gas and tires were done then came in under caution. I believe I was in around 12th place at the time. We were pitting on Gilligans island so I had to stay in the pit even though I was pretty upset about getting out of a car running that well. David made it about 7 or 8 laps and was coming down into the hairpin right in front of our pit when he missed a shift and then wheel hopped it and blew up the transmission. That ended our day. As it ended up that day would have been my best shot at a top 10 Cup finish.
Good question. After I spoke with Chris Edwards, it was a reference to Travis Carter's No. 98 team, where he worked on the crew after Mach I closed. That info didn't come up until after the video was done.

As I said, it's not the end of Larry's story (nor of his interview). I'm already planning a second part in the future.
Gunselman's career highlight was avoiding the wreck at the 2002 Aarons 312
I still wish the #64 would return to NASCAR scene. Cup, Xfinity, trucks, just wish it would come back.
After all the other episodes inadvertedly involved Brett Bodine, we get one on an owner who had the other two Bodine's on his team
You are incredible, Brock. Amazing storytelling from start to finish, particularly how it all came full circle at the end. Loved the Ashlea Albertson tribute at the end as well.
