Big Oil Is Coming For Your EV - And It's Using Politicians To Do So

  • As we barrel toward the end of the first half of this year, we've already seen plenty of very important, pivotal elections take place around the world. In the second half of the year, even more will take place.
But while we've discussed the importance of being a politically active citizen before, this year's election cycles are shaping up to be ever darker, thanks to the influence the oil industry seemingly has over governments and candidates.
Thanks to excellent journalism and on-the-record statements from candidates, we're now seeing just how far the oil and gas industry wants to take us back - and that could influence the EVs you buy - and just how much public funds is sent to continue the status quo of pollution.
    Strap in.

whether or not you want to be involved in politics, politics will be involved in your life. Especially at the local level, where the individual decisions more directly impact your everyday life where they are deciding zoning laws (for affordable, more dense housing), funding allocation (for if that new bike lane gets a hard barrier for protection or just some paint), and other regulations (like if EVs and hybrids will cost more for their annual registrations).

Australian democracy does a few things right. 1: compulsory voting, 2: ranked choice voting 3: polls open for around 2 weeks before the big day on a Saturday + postal voting + employers must give reasonable time for employees to vote 4: “democracy sausages” most polling stations are local schools. They often have bake sales and barbecues cooking sausages to raise money for the school or local organisation. Voting here feels like a nice community event.

      Absolutely, you nailed it.
Many thanks also to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) an independent body that does a wonderful job of ensuring Australian elections are free and fair.
AEC goes to a lot of trouble to ensure the voter rolls are accurately maintained, and the electoral boundaries are based on fair distributions.
It efficiently manages postal and pre-polling and on polling day it ensures the voting stations are well managed. On election night the count is conducted quickly and efficiently. Thankfully there are no arguments over voting machines, because there aren't any. In Australia voting is strictly low tech. Ballots are on paper and marked with an AEC issued pencil ✏️ which you have to return. Close results are always subject to a recount.
As a result, in Australia election day is a celebration, a fantastic demonstration of democracy in action. While wannabe autocrats and dictators might hate the system, I love it and hope it remains ever so.

Sounds like you guys are doing it right!
@@jimgraham6722 Regarding paper ballots, funnily enough, something like 95% of voting in the US is done on paper as well. We don't have special pencils, but it sounds like our process is similar beyond that (in my area, we're given a freshly-printed ballot with the candidates' names, etc. on it and we use a black marker to fill-in the oval next to who/what we want to vote for).
The bickering we have about "voting machines" here is about machines used to tally the paper ballots, a process that can easily be (and is, routinely) audited with hand recounts. It's a strange hill to die on.

Democracy starts with a free press, that have to be truthful.
One of the reason why Norway are the number one democracy 7 years in a row, is that the press has it's own governing body.
If what the news organization says are an obvious lie, they can get fined.
And, if they attack private citizens unnecessarily, the same can happen.

In Colorado we have universal vote by mail. It's awesome.
I'm unaffiliated so I get both primary ballots sent to me and I decide which to return; problem is all the candidates suck or are running unopposed.
It won't be much better in the general. I have the choice between a pro-business anti-worker conservative running with a D next to their name, and a bonkers fishist candidate with an R next to theirs. Yeah, the D is better for most humans, still sucks how they put their --owners-- I mean donors above us people.
Need money out of politics, ranked choice voting, and universal vote by mail with incentives to get more people voting. Say $20 when you return a properly filled out ballot.
Getting rid of the electoral college would also be nice, it doesn't help small states, only gives undue power to a handful of swing states, but that's a problem that'll solve itself as soon as Texas goes blue once or twice. Red team will drop it as soon as it stops helping them win, and most of blue team is already against it.

    - what is your position on fuel subsidies?
    - Where do you stand on energy security, and do you have a policy which will help use renewable such as solar and wind to bolster our national energy security
    - how will you help further support charging standards for electric vehicles, as well as maintenance standards equivalent to those already in place for gas fueling stations to ensure that electric charging stations are functional
    - space do you support right to repair? What will you do to ensure that products we buy, including computer devices and electric vehicles, can be repaired by the mechanic or repair company of the buyers choice?
    - what changes will you put in place to ensure that electric vehicle mileage ratings are more reflective of real world usage?
    - How will you encourage vehicle manufacturers to train sufficient repair technicians so that they can handle repair and replacement of parts in electric vehicles?

The American Oil and to a lager extent the whole American fossil fuel industry is in a fight for its life as America's control of technology, geopolitics and wealth is slipping.
Don't kid yourself, global oil consumption is still growing and even though some of that is getting covered by the biofuels sector the country needs to stay competitive on the global supply otherwise its at the mercy of the Foreign markets and the possibility of trade sanctions.
Asia, the middle east and African nations have grown very tight with china and to a extent Russia.
American geopolitics has essentially made Europe dependent on imports so they can no longer bail America out.

The stupid part is that we could have given the oil industry a soft landing. In 1997 we had about 50 years to phase out fossil fuels. That gives you time to replace things like furnaces and cars as they reach the end of their useful life with electric versions (modern heat pumps are amazing). 50 years was enough time to roll out nuclear power to develop synfuels for industries that can not easily stop burning hydrocarbons: such as long-haul aviation and shipping.
But instead we got over 25 years of delay. The "carbon budget" has not changed in the mean-time, so now we have an extra 25 years of fossil carbon emissions in the atmosphere. We no longer have 50 years to phase out fossil fuels in order to avoid catastrophe. We now have 6 years (2030 deadline instead of 2050). This means that we will need to throw out a new gas water heater in 7 years, before is it likely to break on it's own. I DID have enough pull to get our 40 year old electrical panel upgraded to 125A (from 100A) when it was replaced recently (we got lucky: #0 Al was used instead of #2 Cu for the buried line due to a Cu shortage in the 70s).

The thing that makes me sad is that in the United States, conservatism and the right used to be a somewhat dependable and valid check on unlimited progress. It is, in essence at least, the function of those who are resistant to change.
If the conservative parties have been doing their job over the last 30 years, we wouldn't have the unchecked power of meta, Google, Amazon, etc. Right to repair would have gained more traction. And yes, some things might have been slowed down, but the conversations would've been more meaningful.
There is nothing essentially wrong with somebody asking the question "why do we need to change things?" thing that is wrong is when people either don't want to have the conversation and want to stop change for the sake of stopping change, or even worse, what we have now, which is incumbents in power who want to do whatever they think is necessary to maintain and expand that power.

The USA doesn't have a single Presidential Election. It has 56 separate Presidential Elections. That's because the USA is really a single country. It's 56 smaller countries (i.e. political "states") bound together. Think European Union if the EU Parliament had much, much more say in the laws of the different member states of the EU. It's right there in the name United STATES of America. So the politics that involve both the overarching Federal government and the individual State governments gets really, really messy.

Every year we delay advances the deadline to phase out fossil fuels by 2 years.

You are likely lucky to be someone whose life wouldn't be severely impacted if "the wrong candidate won." I have family members who had to move out of the state they lived in because their state made parts of their life illegal.
I may not like all of the candidates I vote for, but I know there are certain candidates I _absolutely_ do not want to win. I will "hold my nose" and vote for someone I really dislike, because it's a far FAR better choice than the other candidate winning.
At the same time, I voted for my locale's "ranked choice voting" that will take effect this next election (for local elections only, sadly.) And I promote changing *ALL* elections to that, so that there isn't a "spoiler" and you can vote for who you **really** want, without risking someone who wants you dead being elected instead.

If you want to electrify everything, you will need tons of copper for all of the additional electrical power production plants, tons more copper for all of the wiring in-between, tons more copper for all of the sub-station transformers to step that up/down or do AC-DC-AC/DC-AC-DC conversions, even more copper for storage systems to fill in the gaps between generation and consumption, all of the electric motors everywhere, all of that additional wiring, etc. 22MT/year may not be enough to keep up once you add all of the non-electrical stuff that also requires copper.

If the grid can handle the peak supper hour load: it can handle vehicle charging overnight (assuming they don't charge during the peak demand time).
The only caveat is that residential distribution transformers tend to be under-sized on the assumption that they will have time to cool off overnight.
Average commute distance in the US: 42 daily miles
Driving to/from work represents 30% of vehicle miles driven, so we can bump up the daily distance to (1/0.3)(42)= 140 Miles
      225.308km
Assuming 20kWh/100km (typical of a larger EV): (20kWh)(2.25308)=45kWh/night.
      45kWh/8hours=5.6kW
      Typical L2 chargers in NA are 7.7kw (240V, 32A (40A derated 20%)):
      (45kWh)(1000W/kW)/240V/32A=5.859 hours of charge time.
That means that one can plug in their car, wait for peak electrical demand to subside around midnight (this is automated), and still be fully charged by 6AM.

@@jamesphillips2285 I should have phrased that slightly differently: "decarbonify everything."
If you want to replace all carbon-based power generation, you will need 3-5X as much renewable power generation capacity to ensure you at least break even on average, always have enough power generation and transport capacity to refill storage in a timely manner, have spare transport capacity to shift GWs of power from areas with excess energy to areas with deficits, etc.
If you deploy 100s of GWs of solar and wind, that is 100s of GWs that can ebb and swell at the drop of a hat or need to get fanned out across a much larger area to even things out. You need a lot of extra infrastructure to stabilize the grid against that.
