The other thing that nobody talks about as to why movies are in trouble is tvs. Before 2016, nobody had a big tv screen. Now you can have a 60 inch tv that has great sound quality for $400 and it will feel like you are watching a movie at a theater in your home and it would’ve costed you hundreds of dollars less depending on how many movies you watch. I’ve seen it happen with my own parents.

I agree with all the points made here but another one that’s personally affected me, as someone who has always loved to go to the movies, is the behaviour of general audiences these days - I can’t go to many movies without someone in the audience talking or being generally annoying in some way. It puts me off going as I know it will ruin the experience and would be better off waiting to watch it at home

Internet and YT is killing it because if you don't go on opening week you'll get spoiled by "reviewers", memes, twitter, sites headlines. They even upload bts before movie release. this is such a great video, not only for pointing out the facts, but for representing the passion and frustration that all of the movie fans have been feeling as of late.
that being said, you guys could probably go on for hours and hours if you really wanted to dive deep into all of the factors that are killing the theaters and movies as a whole. i think the overarching point of it all comes down to our lousy house of cards we call an economy where everything is just supposed to go up and up and up with no real plan for when things start to go down. do these movie studios really think that they’re just gonna get bigger and bigger budgets and see bigger profits when people simply do not have the money to spend? it’s all just so incredibly unsustainable. maybe a movie market crash will be a good thing and people will figure out how to create on smaller budgets or something, but that’s wishful thinking. it’s just the age we live in where people don’t have the money to go out and spend on experiences and don’t want to go out because they have the internet. clearly these mega budgets aren’t translating to better products either. a lot of these movies are just lame and repetitive and nonsensical, and leave you wondering why they spent an inconceivable amount of money to make it. can they course correct? maybe. but will they?

@@Dakr2000 If the purchasing value of the dollar is lower, and the prices everywhere are higher, you need to decide where does your money go. When in 2018, you could pay your rent, food, etc with X amount of money, and still be able to go to the movies with little to no trouble, in 2024 you can only pay rent and food with the same amount (just an example). So, a night out in the movies is a luxury for many people today.

I think as fans we can be disconnected from the bigger picture 1. after covid people don't want to sit indoors when you can enjoy outside. 2. Pricing is much higher, people not willing to gamble on if a movie is good or not. 3. I would agree time. At home you watch just the movie. You're not sitting through 40 minutes of trailers and ads you've already seen online.

I think that studios need to do a better (and cheaper) job at marketing their movies. Not only do they not do a good enough job marketing them in general, but pretty much every studio has their own social media platforms and UA-cam channels now where they can post trailers, clips, posters etc. for LITERALLY NOTHING! It costs 0 dollars and 0 cents to post stuff to social media to try and get peoples attention. Hell, make some memes or shit and post those to get attention to the film.

  • @ibezzant
    @ibezzant 4 місяці тому +5

COVID and everything it created socially and economically killed the theater industry and drastically altered movie watching habits. Disney and Warner both put A/B tier theatrical releases that cost massive amounts of money to make on $10-15 streaming platforms. Sony theatrical releases go straight to Netflix after a short theatrical run. Everyone got conditioned to getting those kind of titles while spending very little money. The convenience factor conditioned people that those titles will and should be watched at home.
I think the other issues are small contributing factors but clearly the 2019 and prior box office numbers cement this theory because ticket prices/concessions, film budgets were all very similar pre-pandemic. The 20% increase in things like live sports has largely been unaffected, where if economics/inflation were a factor they'd be suffering to a similar degree. NBA attendance for instance is going up despite rising costs.

My opinion as an Argentine cinephile: It's not just the ever increasing cost of movie tickets. Going to the movies used to be one of my favourite activities, but the combination of dim projections (hard to see anything in night scenes and everything looks muted otherwise), teens with smartphones and the new very luminous EXIT signs have soured all my recent experiences. I'll still go 3 or 4 times a year, to support a film I'm very interested in, like Dune or Furiosa, but everything else I'm watching at home.

I think another factor which plays into the whole release window point, is how streaming has ended up with a load of poorly educated “casual” watchers of movies that have learned the wrong lessons and habits.
The amount of times I hear people say “I’ll wait until it’s on Netflix” or “no point going to see it, it will be on Netflix soon” as if every single film goes straight to Netflix after a short run at the cinema…
I think there’s a large portion of people that genuinely don’t grasp distribution rights and think they get most releases on Netflix, unfortunately I know an awful lot of people like this and even see it on the comments sections online for things, it’s as if people just let Netflix spoon feed them.
I’ve even heard people say they’ll “wait until it’s on Netflix” about movies made by Disney owned studios or from Apple and Amazon distributed releases 🤦🏻‍♂️
With this in mind there’s some really big releases people are just completely missing because they’re assuming that they’ll get it on Netflix. It’s crazy.
It does my head in when I see articles about really crap films hitting number one on Netflix, or films that have been out years that never got the warranted attention in a proper cinema environment are suddenly only just being discovered because it just reminds me how many people are part of the problem. It really does make me fear for the future of movie releases when I’m hearing Madame Web is number one on Netflix and it’s most likely not just because people want to see how bad it is but because it’s fairly new and is being spoonfed to people that couldn’t care less

Lol, the A-List subscription is cheaper than the ticket he bought. The subscriptions are an incredible value for a single person. The problem with the subscriptions are they don't work for families. For instance, instead of 3 movies a week for $20/month, A-List could be 1 movie per week for 3 people. They won't do that because they know almost no one sees 3 movies a week. At my peak before the pandemic, I would do a double feature on Friday night; so I was seeing 8 movies a month for $20.

Granted it's incomparable to a high quality theater but it's still very good and much more convenient. Also, streaming is now different from VHS and DVDs in that it's available almost immediately. It's much easier and faster to post high-quality pirate copies online than a physical medium like DVDs. I doubt there's a way to close that Pandora's Box.

I live in the suburbs outside Philly - just the basic 2D that I saw the releases in the 90's of at least Empire Strikes Back, Titanic, the Prequel trilogy, etc costs about 20 bucks unless you go at the 'off' times where it's closer to 17. And they've been cutting back how many showings are even in that format - If I went right now to see Furiosa for some insane reason - there is 1 actual traditional showing, all the rest are with recliners (which costs more), Screen X, RPX, IMAX, and 4DX - all of which cost even more. The last time I actually though about going to a theatre, over the course of an entire weekend, they had maybe 2 showings in standard old format with standard damn seating. 70+ dollars to take a date to the movies, I could take them to a nicer restaurant or any number of other things at that point over a movie that in 3 months I could rent from the library - for free - or buy for 20 bucks and get us whatever snacks to then sit and watch in the comfort of one of our homes with no interruptions that'll have us miss things and all.

It's not really "profit" though. They have to give a substantial portion of ticket sales back to studios. They're also paying for the stock of the food and the cups, buckets, etc.
Also, think about the fixed costs of running a movie theater. 6-20 movie screens running all day, regardless of whether there are 0 people or 300 people in attendance. Thousands of lights. Projectors, Sound systems for every theater. A dozen registers for ticket and concession sales. Several restrooms. Employees every which way. Security, both in terms of personnel and for the building. Advertising. High powered HVAC systems have to work overtime to keep those places cool when you have that many things producing heat. Plus additional costs like sponsoring local events or organizations. Running those establishments is NOT cheap at all.

As long as it's all selling the same treats with the same brand name labels on it, there will always be equal or better alternatives than a shop that offers nothing beyond the expensive candy. @davidjames579 your comment doesn't make any sense.
It's pretty well documented that concessions are the primary source of a theater's revenue.
You said that I proved It's easier to buy candy from an outside source and bring it in, therefore theaters are lying about how they make their profits. But you skipped the entire middle portion of the argument where, you know... this needs to happen, to be proven. Yes, some people sneak in their snacks, but go to any movie theater on the weekends, especially for major releases, and concession lines are still filled.

@davidjames579 it doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense. The fact of the matter is that people do it.
Besides, where/how are you going to smuggle warm, fresh(ish) popcorn into a movie theater? What about your beverage? You might be able to bring a single refreshment in, but you won't be getting refills.
Again, it's the convenience factor. If you want that cheaper candy, that's an extra trip to Walgreens you gotta make on your way to the theaters. People are lazy, they don't want to do that.

Man I love going to movies since I was 7 in 1984. From then on I scratched up Pennie’s to pay that 2.50 at the time to see great 80;s movies. Then in 90’s waited outside in lines for Star Wars ep 1. Oh and the hype for batman, Indiana jones shit even crocodile Dundeee 2. Lost world had a line around the theatre to get in. Godzilla 98 we had beach balls going hella hyped for it then everyone shut up when it started. Transformers the movie being my Mecca, saw it 3 times. Nowadays still love going and getting my son to go now but yeah movies have no variety like before. Where’s the firm, fatal attraction, indecent proposal type movies with the blockbusters. Comparing worldwide prices, in the UK and for an Odeon IMAX evening viewing = it's at least £22 ($28) each, before food, travel, extras or whatever. For a family or a group of friends, you're looking at £100 just to watch a movie. We can go to Amsterdam or Paris for that price. I say IMAX upfront because we are literally banking on a winning movie (for this reason), so want to experience it in its best form, but surely that is what the directors and bosses want?? That's what they say, but the studios will have to suffer for the other movies due to pricing. I'd rather go every week and watch a 3.5/5 for few £ as it's sociable and fun, like in the 80s/90s. Every viewing was packed. So it's 2-3 cinema movies a year for us, that's all I can stomach financially. We don't buy it but a medium popcorn, as a measure of a cinema's rip-off percentage.... £5-6 = almost $7-8 per tub each x 4 = $30. People are sick of it so it's more of a quiet boycotting, but not everyone will tell you that.

I agree with your insight of the evaporating release window. I would also point out that there are movies that are going straight to streaming when they could have had a theatrical release, which could benefit the studios and theaters (which are essentials marekters for the studio's products) I would say the movie 'Roadhouse' is a good example of that, in my opinion. I'm not in the industry but think that this sudden change with day and date release, straight to streaming, and so on is hurting going to the theater.

This list was made by a movie nerd. The true reason movies are dying is because the younger generation has almost no interest in movies. The movie industry was supported on the backs of the young going out on dates and spending the money at the theaters. The young generation has almost no interest in movies anymore. Just look at the stats. The older generations always slow going to the movies because they have lives and are too busy with life to go and just don’t want to shell out the money for the theater experience.
I honestly think that theaters will consolidate into a few big ones that will screen the big “experience” films like Marvel, Avatar and Star Wars, but the smaller films will more and more go to streaming and that will be what it will be. The movie industry as it was has ended and those last strikes gave the participants their last big contract. The budgets for most of these films will implode.

    • @christopherbrown5023
      @christopherbrown5023 3 місяці тому +3

That's not really true though. Super Mario Bros, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Dune Pt 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You. Young people DID go to the movies, and they likely did so multiple times given the enormous success of these films. And that's just recently. Let's not forget 2019 saw a record number of films exceed $1 Billion. Young people clearly ARE interested in movies. But when movies are no longer afforded proper theatrical windows, and are now routinely rushed to PVOD and streaming ... that has sadly inflicted severe harm on the movie business. These misguided practices by the studios have done all this damage. It's not a lack of interest, on the part of young people or moviegoers in general.

@@christopherbrown5023 Event movies attract a bigger audience. However.....the number of tickets sold is down by 33% since the early 2000's. The reason box office grosses look the same is because of higher ticket prices and the rise of premium screens. Teenagers and people in their 20's are a lot les likely to choose the movies as a date night than previous generations. Even children's animation movies by and large are seeing a huge drop on average than before. And sure you can pull exceptions, but the overall marketplace for children's movies are way down. Disney, Dreamworks, Illumination used churn out $100-$200 million dollar grossing movies as the minimum. Not anymore, and it is not a pandemic thing. Almost all the kids I know will watch UA-cam over any Disney movie or streaming show any day of the week. I almost have to beg my kids to watch movies with me. They say it is too long and boring. However if I ask them to watch Urban Rescue Ranch or Snake Discoveries they are totally down. I am not saying I am happy about people losing interest in movies, but I am saying it is a real thing.

If I was more into low distribustion/indie movies, it'd end up being the price of going to the retired twilight screenings back in the 80s. Adjusted for inflation, the movies aren't expensive. Just freakin get dinner out beforehand and have real food before the screening. The popcorn and drink argument is pretty tired at that point. I haven't done the concessions since I was a teenager cuz it was always more than the price of the tickets.

They don't give a shit about creative storytelling or the art of filmmaking.

So all the money made by the films should be handed over to the money men & mega corporations instead of the artists who made them?

@@SharpCinemadude that's not the point The point we're making is artists actors and athletes keep asking for more money and it's driving up prices and they make more money in one movie or game then we'll make it in a lifetime

I dont think there's a future for the industry at all, just look at the bootleg movie and offbrand bad animation industry, it's gonna be like that in a few years, it doesn't even matter, let people make their own movies instead of those soulless corporate oligopolies, they're not fit to make anything anymore
