I love how Prof Bowley explains things.....always with a big smile or a subtle smirk. His passion for physics and science in general just loozes out of him. I would be honored to be one of his past students.
Roger, it's been such a tremendously long time since we've communicated! Good luck on your retirement, and thank you for your collaboration with me when I was a graduate student with Humphrey at Brown. You were a profoundly positive influence, and I like to think I've passed some of that on to my students over my 25+ years as a professor! Say hello to the family, Mike G.
I had to help you Mike --- you rescued us from a blizzard when we arrived in Providence RI. Besides working with Humphrey Maris taught me to be neater in my work. As a result of our work together I got invited to Ecole Normale, and then to Grenoble to work with Philippe Nozieres. So I owe you as well. Roger
I am glad the Professor will continue to share with us. So many educators change our lives for the better and do not get recognition for it. When somebody looks up to a rock star (and makes them rich) and fails to acknowledge the impact that a teacher made on their life, then that is a tragedy. Thank you Brady, and the professors, and the assistants who all make it possible. What you do is so important and so enjoyable that you are all rock stars in my book.
My step-mother was a university lecturer all her life, but published her best books after retirement. She said that, without the distracting students, she could finally get down to some work! Wishing you all the best Professor. This could be the beginning of your career.
Dear Prof, I'm a fan of your work on Sixty Symbols. I love your enthusiasm when explaining difficult concepts to us. I do hope you'll keep contributing to Sixty Symbols, but I understand that the gardening does not do itself! :-) But we'd love to see you back. I hope you enjoy a lovely, long retirement! Thanks!
All the best to him! These video's have been one of the best things I have found on the internet and he's been great at explaining things... I hope he can still do specials!
I just found these videos this past week and have been watching them for several hours each day. I want you to know it isn't your fault when your students don't do well on their tests. It takes some of us awhile to understand. I hope Brady sets you up with your own channel where you can keep sharing your knowledge and your experiments with retirement. Thank you and have fun. I am 65 myself, just earned a lab assistant certificate and have just learned the present is a gift.
I can really relate to Bowley's last comment about thinking you are exposing your ideas in a very clear and understandable way to later learn that a good number of your students just didn't get it. After 40 years of that kind of frustration I completely understand his desire to retire. Good luck Professor!
Best wishes for your retired life. I've only just started watching Bradys videos, but i love them. You've been great to watch, Thank you Prof Bowley. :)
Thank you for all the videos in which you have appeared. Please do not stop making them. Very few people can communicate an idea as well as you do. Have a great retirement! Stay in touch with young people....they keep you young.
Sometimes you think people will always be around...and then they move on. Best wishes to you, Professor Bowley. You were one of my faves and I hope to see you in future videos.
Professor Bowley, after 40 years of teaching you deserve time off to enjoy the other parts of your life which were on the back Bunsen these years. May your life be full of good people with whom you have mutual respect and love, full of good health, and prosperity.
Wow. I am really just starting to study physics, but watching this completely reassured me about pursuing it. From where I come from, people usually can´t wait to finally retire and stop working. Seeing someone talking about how he doesn´t really want to, but just has to, due to whatever reasons, is really inspiring. Professor Bowley, you are still awesome, and I thank you for helping me make it clear for myself, that I have, indeed, made the right choice. Thank you, so much.
@anariaq Professor Bowley is welcome on @sixtysymbols any day... He's promised me he'll keep doing them... Let's just hope he doesn't enjoy the garden too much!
Congratulations on your retirement! I have been watching Brady's videos for a while and I always get excited when there is a new one by Professor Bowley. I like to think of 1000's of kids getting excited about physics and science when they see Professors like Roger Bowley speak passionately. I hope that Professor Bowley does continue to make videos.
Professor: Thank you so very much for teaching me over the internet. You've never met me, but you've contributed to my love of science. Best of luck, and keep passing on your passion!
Dear professor Bowley. I think I'm speaking for many Sixty Symbols viewers when I say that we enjoy your videos A LOT. You're a great explainer (I don't care what your wife says). I hope we can see you on Sixty Symbols for a long time still, you explaining, we watching and learning. I'm sure we'll both be enjoying it a lot. Thanks!
Enjoy your retirement, and it'd be great if you could drop by once in a while, because you're my favourite lecturer on these videos. Don't get me wrong, I like all of the nottingham crew, it's just that Roger is my favourite. Thanks for your contributions, and the manner in which you've contributed, and hopefully we'll see you around.
I think one has to have some large bit of courage to admit and explain your life in the way he does. Thank you Mister Haran and Professor Bowley to share this with us.
Good luck Professor and thank you for all your contributions. May you continue to thrive in your respective field of expertise, regardless of your 'retirement'. Maybe you could do a 'Physics Garden' show, or something along those lines. Enjoy your new-found freedom!
I subscribed to this channel very recently, haven't watched that many videos, but I still got really sad when I saw he was going to leave. I hope you enjoy your retirement professor.
I very much enjoyed his last answer regarding things he won't miss... "...It's like showing a mirror up to you and saying, actually you're not so good as you think you are" quite humbling, thanks for really caring.
This was sad! I'm happy that you'll keep making videos though! Hope your retirement will free up more capacity for brilliant videos! I enjoy the way you teach and your voice comes across clearly in a soft manner. Enjoy your freetime and stay healthy, sir.
Well Prof. Roger Bowley, you have brought smiles, great research and genius explanations for the marvelous world we live in. - "Live long and prosper" - \\ // -
I wish you a long, happy and productive retirement. Alas I cannot comment on all of your work, but at least I can say: "Thank you so very much for the videos!"
I wish you a good time with your family, wife, and all the best! we will miss you on the videos! we can feel the emotion in your voice professor! we will miss you! enjoy your free time as best as you can!
I really admire passionate lecturers like him, although the truth is that the young lecturers are needed as well. Someone has made a place for him to become a lecturer, now someone will take his place. It is not demeaning or wrong in any way, everyone needs a rest. 40 years of work and thousands of his lectures benefitients are impressing! Anyway, I wish prof. Bowley a lot fun during the retirement. Also, I'd love to see more of his videos on sixty symbols!
The best character on sixty symbols, and it's not a vane compliment. I hope he will continue doing videos and share his knowledge. With all my sympathy...
Damn, that's unfortunate because he's not gonna be so frequently on these videos but I'm glad that he has had such a great career. All the best, Professor Bowley.
I have learned a lot from you in the short time i've been watching your lectures, and just wanted to thank you for re-igniting my interest in science. Good luck on your retirement, and come back once in awhile to do a vid or two :) Happy trails old man!
Brady, I hope you let Prof. Bowley know how much we'll all miss him, and how much we enjoyed his work on Sixty Symbols! I always enjoyed his interviews, I sincerely hope he enjoys the hell out of his retirement.
Interesting point about teaching and then marking the exams. One thing I think older people (like me) forget is that when you are bombarded by new information every day for 15 years it is hard to bring it all back on demand. You get to understand it when it is first explained and you can quickly remember it again if you are reminded of the details but in an exam there is no one to nudge you in the right direction.
Please carry on doing youtube videos even if they are not SixtySymbols - you explain science in a very easy to understand and interesting way Professor Bowley :)
There is a video on TestTube (one of Bradys channels) which came out two days ago on my role in the design of coils for MRI. It is under the heading of TimeCapsule. I have not retired: research goes faster without teaching. Roger Bowley
Roger, thank you for many entertaining and instructive contributions to these videos. I always liked that you would show simple experiments on a desktop scale, the kind of thing that I can make and do myself. Now you leave us at the mercy of a particle physicist and an astrophysicist, both very worthy, wise, witty gentlemen of course, but you will be conspicuous by your absence. Enjoy your retirement sir. The garden beckons.
Very nice video. Edited two years later, this guy is a heavy dude, involved in gradient coil shielding design for Peter Mansfield's MRI (Nobel Prize) work. I had no idea when I commented on this 2 years ago. Impressive career, Dr. Bowley.
It would be nice to have a video on what Prof. Bowley is up to nowadays. :-) I love his videos on Sixty Symbols. The nice "magical" little experiments he does are so much fun and remind me why I love Physics despite the fact that I never had a good teacher in school.
I love how Prof Bowley explains things.....always with a big smile or a subtle smirk. His passion for physics and science in general just loozes out of him. I would be honored to be one of his past students.

I got a little misty eyed watching this.
I'd miss him if he stops making videos with you.
still learning from you in 2017., thank you!
What you do is so important and so enjoyable that you are all rock stars in my book.
oh man. so many feels. i had no idea he was retiring. i guess this was 4 years ago. i really appreciate this guy.
I only have 80 million things to say to you and I only know you from the few sixty symbol vids I have seen. The one is, you are wonderful.
Life extension research can keep beautiful people like this around.
I love Prof. Bowley. My fav presenter on SixtySymbols. Sad to see him retire, but I'm sure we'll see more of him. Best of luck, Roger!

After 40 years of that kind of frustration I completely understand his desire to retire. Good luck Professor!
Thank you Professor Bowley for always being awesome :)
Wonderful man, I think. I so much enjoy listening to him. Thank you Prof. Roger B, and thank you Brady!
Best wishes for your retired life. I've only just started watching Bradys videos, but i love them. You've been great to watch,
Thank you Prof Bowley. :)
can hear the sadness in his voice. its really emotional.

Thanks a lot Professor Bowley for the excellent demonstrations on current and magnets. Really enjoyed them!! Best of luck and enjoy your retirement!!
Best of luck and hope to see you in future segments of Sixty Symbols. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos.
Best wishes, professor Bowley. Hope you continue doing these videos, now with renowed energy.
Professor, enjoy your retirement and we'll miss you! Please keep doing Sixty Symbols videos because you are one of my favorite professor!

It's a shame he will not be a part of my course next year. It was a real pleasure to be lectured by him and to speak to him one on one.
Thank you for your charm and insight..and you will hardly be an OAP!!!
Please keep us entertained via UA-cam
Best luck in the future, professor, your contributions will be missed!
It has been an honour to watch your videos, please continue to make videos.
Enjoy your retirement

Prof. Bowley is one of this bunch of extraordinarily talented, charismatic physicists at Nottingham. What a good place.
Thank you Professor Bowley, You're one of my favorites of Brady's associates, you remind me of my grandfather.
Godspeed Professor Bowley! Thank you for your many years and interesting videos!
I think I'm gonna cry. Love this guy so much.

bowley taught me statistical mechanics. absolute legend. have a happy retirement!
Sad to hear this, but glad to hear you will still be making sixty symbols videos!
Thanks for the kind message.

Wow....I don't know you and I'm sad at seeing you retire. PLEASE tell us you're going to keep making these sciences accessible to the rest of us....
Thank you for all that you have shared with us. I truly enjoyed learning from you.
I wish some of my lecturers were this enthusiastic and passionate. Best of luck in your retirement :)
Possibly my favorite contributor to this channel. Thanks Prof!
Please carry on doing youtube videos even if they are not SixtySymbols - you explain science in a very easy to understand and interesting way Professor Bowley :)

Im sure that everyone there is gonna miss him....i know i would. He is awesome
I wish all the best. And thank you for the interesting and entertaining presentations.
I appreciate his continuing the sixty symbols videos.

Beautiful
So sad. :(
I have appreciated your videos a lot and i hope you have a splendid retirement.
Enjoy your retirement, Prof. Thank you for your contributions, they've been great.
Professor Bowley, you will be missed on sixtysymbols/nottinghamscience. All the best for life as a retiree!
Thanks for the lectures you gave through sixty symbols, i've enjoyed them. Good luck with your retirement.
Sad, but I hope Roger keeps active with what he loves. Enjoy your retirement Prof!

It's a shame he's retiring, I was really hoping he would give me a lecture when I went to university in a years time.
I'm glad you'll still be part of Sixty Symbols.
Very passionate about physics, and explained things very well. Great guy.
goodbye professor i really am going to miss you now, because the sixty symbols vids won't be the same without you
Such a shame he's going! One of the best sixtysymbols contributors. Hope you might still ask him the odd question now and again.)
Yes.. absolutely one of my Favourite.. I especially liked the Episodes when he thrown himselves into action.. I guess it was angular momentum..
We'll miss you Professor Bowley
It would be nice to have a video on what Prof. Bowley is up to nowadays. :-) I love his videos on Sixty Symbols. The nice "magical" little experiments he does are so much fun and remind me why I love Physics despite the fact that I never had a good teacher in school.
I appreciate your modesty at the end of the video there!
Well I'm not: I'm now 66. And still an awesome teacher because I frighten the students into a state of awe.
Please continue doing the Videos !!
he was my fav :( good bye professor, thank you keeping my interest in science alive and making it fun for me
Thank you, Professor Roger Bowley , you did a great job :)
