At 54, I've seen metal born, raised, ruined, and resurrected twice. Gojira is exactly why metal doesn't die. Ever. Huge moment. True metal is alive and well here.
Memorable and impactful, Gojira did fans of 'our music' proud. A three minute interlude that will live long is the memory, long after the Olympic torch has passed 🤘🏻
Absolutely not a metalhead myself, inknow nothing about that genre and i have even never heard about them but damn that was epic !! Loved every second of this segment. Was absolutely insane. Probably the best moment of this crazy ceremony
@almamater9566 Man, thank you. I think I can speak for a majority of the metal community when I say, that right there is the spirit of metal music across the genre. You just feel it. Metal comes in many sub genres, but Gojira is a great example of true metal music in it's purest form today. True music- manship, power, feel... spirit. Saw them live a few years back and they're unforgettable.
Hi. Your points are serious and convincing, mate. You missed a big one though, if not the main one: how the French do things, and how they did this ceremony more specifically. Thomas Jolly (the artistic director) and his team were willing to take great risks to make it a very unique and comprehensive show. Tony Estanguet - the head of the Olympics organisation team -, the whole French Olympic committee and the authorities not only backed them without a blink but were very enthusiastic about their ideas. Breaking codes and promoting artistic audacity has been very much at the heart of French culture for the last 1,500 years. Now you’ll be forgiven for not giving a damn about the French and what they are about, obviously. Still, my question is this (I don’t know the answer): which countries do you think would put out such a show, in front of an estimated 2bn viewers, where at some point a beheaded queen opens a song ending with rivers of blood pouring out of every window? I genuinely wonder.
You are so right! Thanks for sharing. Some things I edit out cause I have a tendency to ramble for too long. I cut 15 minutes where I went on about more of the politics side of things which I try to avoid cause, well yea we all know how crazy it gets. But this is I agree the biggest point and yea probably almost no one else would back such content (especially these days). Thanks again for sharing. And thanks to Thomas Jolly and everyone else that had supported.
To anyone who has ever seen Gojira live ..(I have x3 in Vancouver) they play at least one song from every album…as they get more experienced..the songs get better.. and as someone who is almost 50yrs old..going to show s is a young man’s game..But you can bet your gold metal..I will see them every time they come back to Vancouver..even if I’m old and in a wheelchair… One of the best live performances ever 🔥🇨🇦🤘🏽
@@sunpeaksturner True! Seen them a few times and the music manship, professionalism, production, and delivering a concert you'll never forget, has gotten better, exponentially, every tour. You feel their music in your bones for days after the show. FEEL it.

@@mikesmith6594 ... literally have picked up and dusted off a pick that was dropped on a lonely, sad, small stage somewhere in Columbus, Ohio. That Spirit just fired off across millions and millions of homes through Gojira. And they felt that! That... thing! That is why heavy music will never die. They are genuine. They just made so many of us so crazy happy, lmao.
You are awesome brother. I love how you access and breakdown concepts. I fully support your content. I've subscribed and liked. You got a fan in me. Looking forward to see you progress and grow. Much love. Passion for metal.
I felt the same way years ago. I recall seeing an interview or a special about how they (Gojira) experienced a sort of inauguration into the extreme metal realm. They played a festival where every metal band that were there flocked to their dressing room to party with them after their show. The bands that were legendary at the time all welcomed them and gave their official stamps of approval, so to speak. Joe expressed his amazement at receiving all the love. They just wanted to play their brand of metal.
This epic performance was not only a reenactment of the French Revolution but also a a tribute to the victim of the terrorist attack in Bataclan which targeted the Eagles of Death metal concert. The boat on which the opera singer stands is the boat on the coat of arms of the capital, whose latin motto the "fluctuat neg megritur" (it floats, but it does not sink). Hence the fact that the performance represented the liberty (against the tyranny of artistocracy and opressive zealots).
Extraordinary performance.... But NOT the first metal band to perform in an Olympics ceremony ; the South-Korean Post-Metal band JAMBINAI played at the 2018 Winter Olympics Games at Seoul ! Ok, they sound different than Gojira and most of metal bands but JAMBINAI is unique and particular in the scene... They deserve more gratitude !! And even if they didn't sing since it was primary an instrumental band, they belong to the Metal scene.... So JAMBINAI were the FIRST METAL BAND to play at a O.G. ceremony !!! But this Gojira's performance was epic with all this imagery into a such historic place with a politico-historical representation of France is still today ; Freedom, Liberty and Equality (which matches perfectly with Olympics spirit) !
I guess the main reason for Gojira to be on Olympics is because France wants to celebrate diversity as we have seen in all the others scenes of the opening ceremony.
If I may bring a little more input: in the 2015 Paris attacks, more then 90 persons were killed ( including three of my friends) while attending Eagles of Death Metal concert in Bataclan/Paris. They were killed because of religious intégrists. Now, the setting at the Conciergerie, A huge symbol of the French Revolution , putting down the dictatorship of monarchy and of the church….Just think about it. In a time were religious integrists from any religion try to impose their way of thinking…. This was a huge French « fuck you all, nobody dictate us what to think or revolution is what you will get ». What a tribute to my friends, what a tribute to cultural freedom. I don’t listen to metal music, just occasionally, but I was for once so proud to be French, like after our caricaturists of Charlie Hebdo were killed… we all gathered as one people at the Place de la République, and on every square in each end every village despite’s the threat of more attacks… call us stubborn, for sure. Call us cocky, that too… call us provocative… definitely us.. And sure we love to complain about everything… but this opening ceremony with Gojira… you got the whole package of who we are and how we react to things…
Trust is a great band. I featured them in an episode a while back. They are also the ones that swapped out Maiden drummers: Nicko Mcbrain > Clive Burr .
So...regarding the reasons that led them to this point, you don't think that the fact they being an environmentalist band and having environmental messages hellpped them branching out? Its incredible you don't mention this in your deep analysis.
ooops wrong bassist, and getting gold for a netal album in France,is like getting a seat on a rocket to mars, close to impossible, and i am the French dude that did the Fortittude cover, same style as the emperor of sands Mastodon also my stuff,Vive la France,Vive GOJIRA.
it very dificult to survive as metal band in France,on top of that singing in english as a non hiphop thing, its almost impossible,i am french, they still listen to 1970 pop crap
All of these "It should have been MY favorite band who is MUCH heavier" comments are so smooth brained. Like, just say nothing instead of being cringe.
I understand.. and sort of agree with the argument for Meshuggah. But this was Olympics in Paris, so Gojira is the pick. Meshuggah has more than earned the notoriety that Gojira has received. But so has Gojira. Both of them are extremely influential. Meshuggah has been at it for far longer and is obviously one of Gojira's influences. Meshuggah deserves their own moment. Not just being mentioned by Bill Burr or Ozzy's son.
They are both deserving (as with many others). I think we just need to appreciate anyone having the chance to perform in this type of setting. It was a huge win for so many bands, not just Gojira or whoever had been picked.
At 54, I've seen metal born, raised, ruined, and resurrected twice. Gojira is exactly why metal doesn't die. Ever. Huge moment. True metal is alive and well here.
Just for clarification, which is important! The idea for the staging came from DAPHNÉ BÜRKI, who worked with Thomas jolie.

🥇for Gojira
The period that was showed was the French Révolution, not Les Misérables. 😉
Most Gnarly Day in History Gojira performing at the Paris Olympics 2024!
Been a Gojira fan since 2010. I’m so happy for them and metal! I knew they were the next Metallica. Awesome video man! 🤘🏼🔥❤️
