There has been lots of buzz around the idea that 8 gauge strings are once again a viable choice. This renaissance is largely due to my friend Rick Beato's video on the topic of light strings which I will link below. In fact, it was a discussion that I had with him that was the tipping point for me, thus causing me to switch to 8s. That in turn begged the question, " can you get a good clean sound with 8s?" Rick and another friend Marshall Harrison all gave me good reason to exam my ideas about gauges. It's been thoroughly proven that 8s sound good with overdrive. However, what about clean sounds? What about hard to get clean sounds like a Jazz sound? Herein I tackle that and more. In addition, I squash the myth about the strings themselves having a "tighter bottom end." There is a fun bloopers reel at the end, so hand around to the end.

Glad it was helpful! One thing that I've learned is that playing neo soul on light strings is an absolute pain in the bottom! It's simply way too easy to make mistakes and due to the slightly less mass, the strings don't support the sliding of diads for any length of time (as they do in that style) on the higher strings. On my Neo Soul vid I had to do so many damn takes! Ugghghghghgh!

Ajin, I actually have never heard of one that is "anti-rust." However, the best gauge for eights is Curt Mangan. If you look at my description, you will see a 20% off discount code. I believe that they make the best eight gauge strings. Give them a try! You will not be sorry.

I have a hereditary problem as my body destroys calluses, and by that I mean we (my family) don't get them. They start to form then go to bed to wake up with them 90-100% gone. It gets so bad that when I try to practise it feels like I am playing on razor blades and immediately have to stop. So much pain I am seven months in, and you wouldn't know that I wasn't in my first week. I play 10s, and I wonder if 8s would help at all? I did try 9's at first for the first month.

@@streetwiseguitar5113 Been using D'Addario for the 9 then the 10's, and I have never even heard of Curt Mangan. PITA trying to find 8 online since no shop here carries them locally.

But do they stay in tune as well as heavier gauge strings (provided you have a proper set up, etc.)??

I certainly don’t see why not? I think also a lot with depend on how hard you play. PS thank you so much for watching the video I sincerely appreciate it.

Anecdotal evidence, but once stretched (takes 10 minutes). My 8 gauge strings almost never go out of tune and I’m a blues player who bends a lot

I love the sound of 8s with overdrive. But I can’t stand the plinkiness I am experiencing with a clean tone, how do you mitigate that?

Good question! What kind of music are you playing, how hard are you picking, and what kind of guitar and amplifier are you playing through?

Thank you for your reply!I play blues, I try to pick softly as picking hard makes the plink happen. I play an upgraded Yamaha Pacifica 012 (SSS, graphtech nut, stainless steel saddles) with about 3mm action. II am playing through a Blackstar Club HT40, but the dreaded plink also occurs when playing clean through any preset in Amplitube. Thank you in advance, you seem to be the only one addressing this!
