I absolutely love this spread, and can definitely see using it. I can see calling the last group “possible outcomes” to emphasize personal choice. I almost forgot to say a HUGE thank you for the link to the book! As a history nerd, I have been wanting to know how the actual card came Tarocchi was played, and I’m delighted to see it is included at the end of the book!!! ❤ I think I’ll have to re-write the instructions in my own words to finally understand it. 😂

I love this workshop. I tried the Simple Tarot and my Scapini deck. I find it so unusual and yet, it felt innately familiar. The pairing process seemed so natural, so perfectly right, it made me wonder why we ever stopped coupling cards. Benebell this is a terrific series!
This reading style reminded those days when I was doing my research on old ways of divination during ancient times - the methods used are usually popularly used in french style cartomancy.. Very fun. I've never used it for tarot... but since I have been going back to Tarot of Marseille I might just give this a go. Thanks for the share - made me want to go back to those old style methods which I always had that experience of accuracy (but was too lazy to do for myself most of the time due to the time it consumes lol)
Yes! I study the history of tarot! And I was trying to figure out what caused tarot readings to go from tableau and 45+ card spreads (check out Kaplan's 1970 guidebook with the Swiss 1JJ deck... :O ) and it was really Waite's Ancient Celtic Cross which... seems to be made-up... But anyways Eden Gray's Complete Guide there were no massive spreads, most were 12 cards or 15 max. Tableaus and long lines TELL DEEP STORIES and identify people and forces - but... It means you HAVE to know your deck and can't spend all day looking up meanings for 55 cards. Right? After Gray large spreads seemed to have been declared old-fashioned. You can't find a pointer to 4 different people that might help in a 3-card spread!
I finally got to this! Great video! For some wierd reason I feel like the predictive future part went better/easier for me than the first horseshoe of the past. I definitely plan on doing this spread again when I have more time on hand (ah a dream) because I feel this spread deserves (and needs) more dedication and time from me. Benebell This Spread is interesting I've never seen spread where the cards were counted into piles like this before. I've been a Tarot reader since the 1970's an was always taught to read reversals, to use my knowledge of the cards with my psychic abilities. I am so glad you are teaching an speaking of this in readings. I know that some people shy away from predictive psychic readings because they feel it leaves you or the client you are reading for no choice or decision making in the future. I was taught that by what we see of cause is never set in Stone. We always have choices .My mentor taught me what tends to happen with future or predictive readings is. Unfortunately we are a creature of habit and even though we are sometimes shown another Path to follow, or a warning we tend to ignore the signs. We all know the Saying Forewarned is Forearmed. Haha well, I can't imagine this being a much appreciated reading method in a professional client reading setting, lol. Imagine your client's face as you take up half an hour to count and deal out cards into all these crazy piles. But it is fun to try out at home on a lazy weekend. ^_^*

I love 19th century tarot books. They are unapologetic in their fortune telling and odd specificity. Stuff like 4 of Swords: A short man with syphilis will visit Thursday.

Anyway talk about spot on for present situation and well we shall see about future as I have two big events coming up and and the cards were insightful (used mathers interpretation). Again thank you. I am really thinking of incorporating this into my daily tarot working for a bit.

Also, I just noticed that at around timestamp 9:10, you can see for just half a second my true facial expression: I just finished all the counting and dealing and it's as if my face is saying "Fuck man..."
This was interesting. I did it using The Golden Tarot by Liz Dean which is a pip deck that uses the same order of Majors as the Marseilles. I did use the meanings provided. I did not count my cards right and had to adjust, which perhaps that put them in the order the universe wanted. ;) Though I would probably not use these card meanings in the future, they did give me some additional insight into my own card interpretations and meanings....adding another layer. I think I will try this again in a few weeks using one of my RWS decks and my own card meanings.
Pile 1 and 2 were particularly interesting. I've recognized more from pile 1 than 2. Reversals were a bit of challenge as I don't usually read with reversals, but committing to the series after all. Final future card seems to confirm certain fears about material, with final present card being impulsive. To some extent it all seems accurate. Good spread.
Yes! I love this reading method, too! It's a little nutso what with all that focused counting in the beginning, and the card pairings do get a little tedious halfway through Horseshoe #2 haha but-- fun all the same.

I attacked Eteilla's 1790 book with Google Translate and discovered where Mathers got his 26-17-11 horseshoe from. Eteilla called 26 the soul, 17 the spirit and 11 the body. Mathers 1888 was "mostly Eteilla" (yes, with Levis' trumps) but... gotta know French or be super patient to read Eteilla. All the spreads in Mathers' booklet come from this "Cours théorique et pratique du livre de Thot" (1790) Book is available in lit. archives!!
❤ Thank you for this additional information. I like Etteilla’s definitions better. It’s also possible to read the last round as “potential outcomes” instead of “the future”... although I realize Ms. Wen was trying here to be faithful to the Macgregor Mathers book.

It’s such a centring approach to Tarot, it’s almost meditative and is like using yarrow sticks for iching, it’s purposeful and elaborate.

The fun part is, in the papers for the Golden Dawn (i.e. Liber T and some other papers), Matthers himself contradicts what he wrote in this book.
Gotta admire Mathers for his imagination. "Ancient" mode of reading I just made up yesterday ;) still a fascinating reading though
