    I saw a photo online that affected me so much I couldn't sleep. The next morning I "adopted" an orangutan and fund raise for them. I hope to go to Borneo in the next couple of years

      @keithmuehsam8990 really? Smh that was the saddest comment i ever read by this species needing help does not take away from the fact that humans need help as well. Everybody donates to different causes. If you're so worried about it, then when you donate your money, then send it to the vets.

    I fell in love with orangutans due to one single meeting of one back in 1971 or so. I was a teenager still in high school in a very small town in Mississippi. Once a year there was a small carnival that came to our little town. They had a 18 wheeler trailer that had a single chimpanzee and a orangutan in separate cages. As I walked through looking at them I stopped at the orangutan cage and was looking at her/him. The cage had two separate pieces of wire cage about 8 or 10 inches apart. The holes in the wire was small enough that the orangutan or us humans couldn’t stick our fingers in to come in contact with each other. I had a pack of chewing gum and I took a piece out, unwrapped it and put it in my mouth. The orangutan stared at me doing that and I could tell it wanted a piece.. It tried sticking its fingers through wanting a piece but we couldn’t reach others fingers. I had a piece trying to give it to her. There was a paper Coca Cola cup in its cage and she picked it up and tore a long strip. She poked that strip through the wire enough that I could place the gum on it. She gently pulled it back, took the gum and started chewing it like I was. That’s when I knew how smart and amazing orangutans are! I’ve never forgot that and realized at that moment how wrong it is to cage such a beautiful, intelligent animal! Humans are evil for destroying their habitat and putting them in cages for entertainment! I wish I could do something to stop that! Amazing majestic orangutans deserve better!

      Dale, thanks for your story--how wonderful! There is an organization that's been extremely successful in restoring rain forest / orangutan habitat in Borneo. Its U.S. "parent" is "Health In Harmony," in Portland Oregon. The action branch in Sukadana, Borneo is called ASRI. ASRI is about 12 years old. It was founded by an American doctor and an Indonesian dentist, and is now run by Indonesians. It works in partnership with local people to restore ecological and human health. it's really inspiring. You might want to look at their website to get a sense for how you could help them, and even visit!

    People see these little babies as such cuties, I do as well. What most don't see through the little cute baby is a full grown adult orangutan. They grow up just as people and other primates. Honestly who would want a full grown orangutan with fierce and strong will. People need to leave them alone to live freely and beautiful like they were meant to be. Teaching them after losing their mother they become used to humans as their saviors and good people, which in the wild would get them killed by the same people that they came to trust so much.🥺

    • @elizabethstops2362
      @elizabethstops2362 9 місяців тому

      You're not getting the point of this video. Their habitat is being destroyed by palm oil companies. Man is destroying their way of life. If you kill their mothers, the babies can't survive. Their not humans, but they are pre humans. So they are killing our ancestors there's no "wild" for them to live in.

      I feel you but there's some problems. First of all, palm oil is disguised under like 30 different names, and it's in almost all packaged/processed foods. But even if we could successfully identify everything containing it, a boycott is never going to be widespread enough to take effect. And even if it could get big enough - the most likely result is that the boycott puts out of business the smaller companies that do sustainable palm oil production, only increasing the reliance on the ones that cause the deforestation, since they're big enough to withstand the boycott. The truth is that the only way this is going to change is if the local governments force it to. But they can't because they're either bought out by the industry, or the industry is more powerful than the local governments. So, unless we literally have a successful international revolution against capitalism, the only solution I can see is if people in the west force OUR governments to implement restrictions on products that would force the palm oil industry to change their methods - because they will continue as long as our countries are buying indiscriminately. From the consumer end it may do a little bit if one tries to intentionally support companies practicing sustainable palm production by buying their products - if you can afford the increased prices.

    Dr. Birute Galdikas is an amazing woman and truly a groundbreaker in orangutan conservation. I enjoyed reading her book "Reflections of Eden:My years with the orangutans of Borneo." The orangutan who holds her hand on that cover of the October 1975 National Geographic magazine is still alive and having babies in the wild today.

      It's a wonderful book. I was an anthropology student at ASU when Goodall,
      Fosse and Galdikas, all Leakey students, had been doing their daunting work for over a decade. Still, after many reads I am most enchanted by the book and the work of
      Birute and only found it a year ago. Please pass the word to others who may not know of her and her biography -- she is as enchanting, intelligent & compassionate as the Orangutans.
      A truly great read that is so modestly presented yet so adventurous in spirit and deed. Love to see a good documentary on her life's work and the Orangutans which have so often been overlooked because of man's (I do mean men) violent nature & dominance.

    Has anyone ever considered relocating to another rainforest area on another continent. Is it possible food wise?

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 2 роки тому +1

      Deforestation is a problem everywhere and not only is relocating an entire species from their natural habitat not possible but orangutans wouldn't survive it as they've adapted over millions of years to live only in Indonesia and Malaysia. They're also a keystone species so without them, other animals and plants suffer. It's quite possible that orangutans will be extinct in the wild in our lifetime if deforestation, poaching and the illegal pet trade isn't immediately and seriously addressed by the Indonesian and Malaysian govts.

    • @keithmuehsam8990

    I love orangutans, but I think that, these videos are bias and one sided. They don't show, how the people in these countries are starving, and strugling to survive. It is wrong what they're doing to the forest, but we should not judge them, for wanting to feed their families. We should work toward a solution, to solve both problems.

    Ridiculous introduction. Orangutans are the SYMBOLS of the Bornean and Sumatran Islands yet there is much rural sprawl, logging, poaching, and habitat destruction for palm oil plantations that have destroyed millions of acres of original tropical rainforest and thousands of orangutans in the most cruel ways imaginable. But the babies have black market value and hence the lucky ones make it to overflowing sanctuaries. The orangutan is on the coinage, paper money and stamps of Borneo but most Borneans have never SEEN one.

Dian Fossey started later in the 1960s. It's also disappointing that Leakey's role in setting this up is quietly ignored.

      I can't blame her for trying. There's only so much begging and pleading can do. At least she was trying to think of another way. How did this effort harm what she was already doing? You should really back up you statement at least with a link.

    As much as I like orangutans, I prefer to spend my money on palm oil. The good doctor's ecotours are simply too expensive for me. The only way these orangutans are going to survive, with all the clear cutting of rain forests being conducted by developing nations trying to meet the demands of the marketplace, is to find a niche in human society as a pet. Cats and dogs have been very successful in using humans to populate the Earth. If orangutans are so gentle, why can't they be pets?

    Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The aspect ratio is the ratio of width to height of something. This video has an aspect ratio of 16:9. They named the whole show after the ratio between the sides of the video frame.

      Many times palm oil is listed as "vegetable oil" in the ingredients in many products, according to a man from Borneo in another orangutan video I had watched yesterday. Either way, whenever I do read that its in the ingredients, that item is put right back on the shelf!! I refuse to help these money-hungry bastards destroy the lives of these beautiful innocent souls!! ❤

      Palm oil isnt the real issue. Its the fact the Indonesia is a poor country and make a lot of their money by selling goods. If it wasn't palm oil it would be another crop. The African palm tree isn't even native to indonesia

    What beautiful animals. l can't fathom why they are not just cutting down some of the forest (which would be bad enough) but why ALL of it? Greed, greed, greed corruption, CORRUPTION! ;(

      theresa42213 Idk if it's greed as what's more likely as bad economic conditions mixed with a poor government. I'm sure there are some of those that can be described as greed, but I have a feeling a lot of people there are just doing what they can to support their families. Greed is possible to fix by regulation, but country wide issues that have lasted generation are unfortunately not as easy.

      +theresa42213 In the 80s environmentalism wasnt really all that popular. Palmoil was high priced and in demand so they pretty much cut Down all the Rainforest of Borneo to make palmoil plantations.
