Bookbinding - Using a Ploughing Aid

  • Trimming the edges of a book using a plough is an ancient yet effective technique, but getting the book positioned correctly in the laying press so the cut is accurate can be a frustrating part of the process. A ploughing aid can help this by setting up the position of the book out of the press and guaranteeing an accurate cut. As far as I know no-one produces these commercially (yet), but they are relatively simple to make and an absolute boon if you use a plough! (Credit to my friend Bob Hamer who made this one for me.)
Footnote: I understand from others that the original design for this simple but effective device was probably created by a John Alabaster here in the UK in the late 1990's. We are indebted to his ingenuity!

Excellent combination of tools. Done in that way, the book will never have the shape of a trapezoid. Thank you for sharing.

I think you have saved my sanity with this video, Glenn, thank you! I have an edition of books to plough and cutting a straight edge quickly and accurately was one of my headaches.

Glenn, I definitely need one of these! I've cocked up a few books with poor ploughing because they have twisted in the press, despite my best efforts to get them straight before ploughing. Problem is I just don't have any woodworking skills. Can you suggest anyone who could make one for me like yours?

Not really I'm afraid, though it is pretty straightforward for someone who is handy. Show them the video so they can see what is needed.

Do you have such an aid for backing? :) I find I have the same problem at that stage - I need 7 hands!!!

No, but what I do do is ensure I have waste sheets attached to my book block and then use a couple of small pieces of double sided tape along the top edge of the backing boards to help stick them to the book in the correct place before putting it in the press. It does help hold things in place. Otherwise you are right, 7 hands minimum . . .
