"Join me at the table, and let's see how this works." That totally threw me off! It makes sense, since this itself isn't a game that you "learn how to play" - my brain just wasn't ready for that change in routine!
Exellent video! I think this is a must have for a Scythe player! The possibility to remove some group of hexagons is fantastic...that will make the gameplay tighter and the combats much more possible to happen than before...great!!!
On our local forum we've discussed the modular board and while the majority of us agrees it's AWESOME and a must have, there is one thing that stands out: once you remove a tile or two, as suggested for lower player counts, that barren landscape looks really, really ugly. I just wish there was some nicer art beneath so that when you take the tile away you still get some eye candy. One solution would be to make the art on the very board nicer, but still distinct enough so that players don't confuse it with actual hexes (although, come on, you can clearly tell the difference between playable and non-playable area). Other solution would be to add a blank tile with art, but that just gives you extra pieces to knock around :) Maybe it should have been all water... What do you think? Is it going to look ugly to you when you play a 2p game and there's that desolate landscape?
@@WatchItPlayed We got over the "ugly" design pretty quickly, for starters. :) We realised we now really have two modes of play with 2p: more warlike, conflicty style if we remove sections or more euro-style, play-your-own-game if we don't. Both work, and we choose depending on the mood. If we remove sections we use the barren landscape to house resource and money tokens :) But to tell you the truth, we rarely play Scythe 2p nowadays. We're busy playing Spirit Island and Gloomhaven, just the two of us. Scythe gets pulled out when we have 4 or more! :)
@@dwarrenmsp I still ignore the rule. It's only a major issue if you have people who really study the game to make "recipes" for move orders. I've played 100 times, but even I wouldn't know the secret formula to getting 6 stars in 12 turns or whatever it is. If it starts becoming an issue then I'll start policing the rule.
@@StevenStJohn-kj9eb I'd never thought about it but the Crimera balance is insane if you let them have the Patriotic board, they can spend a dollar to get two cards and a heart, then spend one card to get four dollars and a mech(given that they've already upgraded and promoted). That makes them crazy powerful and put them on track to get maximum popularity. No wonder they banned that one.
@@andrewh5568 upgraded, promoted, and built a monument I think you mean. It's powerful, but they do have to do some work before they get to that point. It's up to a neighboring faction to disrupt them with combat. But I agree they have the potential for a really nice engine.
@@WatchItPlayed the board in the base game of Scythe has tunnels in the middle of the map that allow you to move units between them, I don’t see that on the modular board
@@generalx90 You'll see one pictured here: ua-cam.com/video/iyZ9V6w3-1Y/v-deo.html These work the same way as in the base game, so there wasn't anything new to mention in this video. Hope that helps!
I love the new enter and exit scene thing you’re doing for transitions. I would enter stage left if I’m leaving stage right, though. The continuity is a little jarring.
This is neat, but is it necessary? Maybe I just haven't played my copy enough to need it. At least it's easier to set up than the last modular board I bought (Small World: Realms, which I've never even bothered trying to assemble)
I don't think it was necessary but there was enough demand that they'd be fools to leave the money on the table. I'll probably buy it when it comes to my local games shop.
After 25-30 plays my group would really like this. We've played enough different faction/board combinations that while the game is still interesting, the core strategies for each faction are getting a bit predictable. We have the expansions, but the new endgames and airships don't produce a randomized starting point.
I just watched all these Scythe videos in your "play group" but should the 7th ENGAGE! video of Catan be in here as well or is that must a mistake? Thanks :)
How does tge suze if the modular board compare to the size of the enlarged board? My friends and I absolutely love the enlarged board, but mods would be really cool too

They are large enough, I don't think you'll find that happening to any significant degree - but it's also going to depend a bit on how aggressive your players are.

Quite a difference in costs between making double layer player boards, and a quadruple layered (remember, each side is unique), folding main game board. Would dramatically increase the cost of this expansion. That said, each player will have to decide if they think the hexes being loose is something they are okay with or not - glad the video could give you this to consider.
