I need to let you know that as a New Yorker who moved to Seattle and went from city to summit life, your videos have helped me so so much! I purchased my water filter based on your videos and I've impressed my Seattle mountaineering friends with it. OutdoorResearch gear has blown me away! I love it! My dude, keep on keeping on! Thank you so much for your videos!
In the winter i include one of those silver space blankets. If you get stuck overnight you can sit against a free on your pad, arms inside your jacket, under the space blankets.
Nice kit. Though I’ve done a great deal of backpacking (including thrus), I am primarily a day hiker. However, my theory is never to go in the wood without expecting to stay there. So over the years I’ve refined and pared my system down. My regular three season day pack weighs about 15lb with 2 liters of water, and has everything I need including shelter. It’s only a little minimalist, and I like carrying the weight because it keeps me trim and used to it. Not for everyone, but it works for me.
I agree with you, day hikers should plan to stay out an extra day. A lot of people don't even bring water with them. You just never know what could happen.
I would add a large contractor grade trash bag as a rain skirt or ground cloth or tarp as needed and a small hank of cordage. I’ve used both as pack repair and pack liner in a pinch when my (cheap) pack split. I also do what through hikers do and wrap a few feet of duct tape to my hiking poles. Good for shoe repair on the trails.
Great video. Saw you on The Restless Ones channel last night. That was a riot. You were awesome. Regarding day hikes, I would always follow REI’s 10 Essentials and them modify based my needs for that particular hike. Good stuff man. Can’t wait to see your Cranberry Wilderness video. Cheers.
Just got my Z-packs Nero delivered today! Can't wait to take it on the trails tomorrow. One change I made was I replaced the closed-cell foam back pad with my REI Flash sit pad. It folds in half and doubles as a pillow for overnights
I switched to the 30 oz Evernew bag. My replacement Sawyer bags leaked after a few trips. The original Sawyer bag that came with the filter lasted 2 years
Nice! All of my hikes have been day hikes. I always carry the Walmart 5x7 blue tarp. It makes a great ground sheet for those moments to sit and relax for an a few hours. Great gear items for a day hike my friend ☺️👍
Very informative. Good call on the Mio energy I do the same thing but I use the great value powdered version I’ve got it down to two of those are equal to one monster LOL
Just checking in kekoa(warrior) had a rough week probably gonna ride out to the Mojave desert (My Harley) build a fire and have some me time. Used to take my dog with me we'd 4×4 out into the darkness build a fire and chill. Still trying to see if we can manage to fly you out to California (budget flight)😅 and we can hit some mountain or desert hiking. I'll keep you posted little brother. Love and aloha Big Duke.
Yeah you're right.. sometimes I forget that people have alot going on, my ol lady lets me go on a couple trips a month.. you got a nice 6 month vacation coming though..
Thanks for the video. It seems like anytime I have my pack in hand it’s for a weekend or a little exercise so I fill it up! I suspect I would be a “one more thing” kind of person. No poncho to build an emergency shelter?;)
You can use some water to wipe down before camp. Take some clothes off an air out. I bring sleep clothes so I'm not sleeping in wet clothes. Also you can try some baby wipes or wet ones.
I used to have that mindset. After 4 years I've never once needed a knife bigger than 1" as for Paracord, lots of better rope out there that doesn't stretch. I don't bring any cordage for areas that I am familiar with. Backpacking trips definitely but not day hikes to places I've been.
One thing no one mentions when discussing getting lost on the trail are the poorly done or absence of blazes. Am I the only one that thinks the blazes are always there when you don't need them and when the trail isn't obvious, the blazes are no where in sight. It's time we backpackers demanded better trail markings. People die due to poorly marked trails. If you got hurt in a car accident and it was shown that a stop sign or light or yield sign was missing, you could pursue legal actions. We have standards for all kinds of things, why not trail markings? We need a group to address this issue. The Nation Backpackers /Hiking Association. Dixie? Darwin? Frozen? Big Foot? Any suggestions? You guys are some of the most admired among hikers. (Count me in with those that admire you) What do you think?
Solid load out for your day hike. If more people packed in a similar fashion it might help them avoid potential dangerous situations.

I'm building up my day pack now, so timely information!

Because of you I've had a cut smartwater bottle and sawyer filter. Thank you brother
I have been wanting you to do this video. I am one that does short day hikes 10 to 15 miles. Am sure others will appreciate the info to thanks.
A lot of people would call 10-15 mile day hikes long. I'm with you though, this is the range I enjoy. My favorite is 20.

The are testing out some different options for their back pad. I'm torn between the closed cell foam and the egg carton style sit pad.

Good stuff Frozen! I’m stoked to follow you on the AT next season. Thanks for sharing! Cheers.
Thank you. Believe me I can't wait to start!
Thank you my friend for sharing this comprehensive review list. It is greatly appreciated. Please take care out there. 🤗

How about a a lite tarp for a shelter encase you do get caught overnight and it's raining or one of those SOL bivy bags?
Situational like many other things.
That was some great info!
thanks for sharing. I just got into hiking and been doing 6-14mile hikes so far!
Very good ideas, Thank you very much
Good information Frozen. My puffy and rain jacket is always in my pack. You just never know

I love those AliExpress sit pads!
Good one!
Thanks!

Picardin works so so good..day hikes are no where near as fun as camping trips though..great video dude..
Agree with you. Sometimes that's all people can do is day hike because of many reasons.
Yeah you're right.. sometimes I forget that people have alot going on, my ol lady lets me go on a couple trips a month.. you got a nice 6 month vacation coming though..

Nah between the pack, sit pad, rain jacket, and puffy I'm pretty sure I can figure it out. An orange garbage bag can be very useful as well.
What brand of buff do you prefer?
I just get the original buff. Lasts until you lose it.
How do you clean yourself up before you hit the rack at night. I can't sleep when I'm all sticky from body sweat ?
You can use some water to wipe down before camp. Take some clothes off an air out. I bring sleep clothes so I'm not sleeping in wet clothes. Also you can try some baby wipes or wet ones.
I'm surprised you didn't mention a fixed blade knife or paracord.
I used to have that mindset. After 4 years I've never once needed a knife bigger than 1" as for Paracord, lots of better rope out there that doesn't stretch. I don't bring any cordage for areas that I am familiar with. Backpacking trips definitely but not day hikes to places I've been.
No navigation aids other than a map?
And phone GPS
Nice vid
What is the first item called?
Trekking Poles? They are the Leki Carbon TI.
1 thing you forgot - a cheap shopping plastic bag for the trash you pick up on the trail - its just good trail karma...
True. I usually bring a gallon ziploc freezer bag for my trash and others. People are slobs.
So you buddy Shug Junior
would never carry all that on a day hike
Then dont.

I agree this happens a lot! But it all comes down to trails needing volunteers to help with things like that.
Nice legs
I watched this until he showed us the trekking poles. From the look of his pack he has enough stuff for a through hike on the AT.
😂
