Thank you, Lynn. One of my favourite poems, and also one of the reasons I decided to start this channel to begin with.

This was my and my sister's favorite poem that my Grandmother used to read to us when we were children.
Written the same year my Grandfather was born.
Had to listen this Halloween weekend. Such a fitting, suspenseful poem.

Thanks, Roman. That's quite a history you have with the poem. It's one of my favourites, too.

I am now in my late 70s and read this poem for the first since schooldays. I was embarrassed when I shed a tear or two, and so I was pleased to find this video where the reader shares his emotions too. Unpretentious and very moving. Thank you Mattie. ❤

My second time listening to The Highwayman Mattie and it moved me again - even more than the first time. It’s the raw emotion that pours out of you. Truly stirring. Thank you Mattie.

This is such a powerful story and one of my absolutely favorites; ( I have so many favorites, ha ha )
    Many , many thanks,
Have you ever heard Phil Och’s UA-cam version -
It’s so beautiful and so apparent that he feels the same way about this great poem as you do , Mattie .

It is a wonderful and moving poem indeed. It perfectly captures idealized romantic love, and it gets me every time. My love of this poem was the principal motivation for starting this channel. I learnt how to film, light and edit just so that I could read this poem. And it took me so many takes! Every time I reached the poem's climax, I would break down. I was entirely unable to finish the poem without tears. Finally, I just accepted that tears would have to be a part of my reading.
Thank you for introducing me to Phi Ochs, Trish. His version of this poem is truly beautiful.

I watched your performance of “The Highwayman” again. Love it. I was first introduced to this poem many years ago in school by a substitute teacher. Her performance was great also. I fell in love with it then and have read it countless times since then.

Really enjoyed this reading. Refreshing to see your emotion shining through, which is how a narrative poem like this , should affect us when we read it/hear it. I'm teaching this in my English Literature class and I love it. Thanks for taking the time :)

Thanks Stacy, I very much appreciate your comment. This was my first video and many attempts ended up on the cutting room floor. I had some odd notion that I shouldn't get too "caught up" in the reading myself, as that might distract the audience. So I'd start filming, and then give up if I felt the tears approach. Which they always did; it's just such an incredibly moving poem. Finally I gave up and just let the reading take me where it would. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

    • @MattiesStoryland

Thanks Crystal. This was my first video. I did so many takes trying (and failing) to keep the emotion under control while I filmed it, because I thought it might be a little distracting for anyone watching if I got too caught up in it. In the end (as you can see) I just gave in, tears be damned. I have to say, I'm glad I did. Especially knowing someone else got a little teary-eyed, too. Thanks for that.

Thanks Robert, that's very kind of you to say. I will absolutely read "Maud Muller", and thank you for the suggestion. I'm working on two story requests at the moment, as well as three other poems (two of which are original) so it may take a little bit before I can get to it - but get to it I shall! Thanks again for watching and commenting.
