Love your cord flexing and sparkling aftermath. Great video and interesting old sets. An enjoyment to watch and excellent commentary. Thanks for the upload.
I used to fix those all the time, and raised my family in the repair business. I ought to get and restore a couple myself, just for old time's sake. Maybe one from each decade.. 50's, 60's 70's, 80's. I loved Zeniths above all others! Hand-wire me, baby.
I had a procession of colour TV's in The UK: They all had tired CRT's. The red parts of the pictures all exhibited flare at the edges. All were 90 degree delta-gun CRT type. A re-gun in any case was more than the sets were worth. I was offered a 405 line NTSC colour TV. It was a prototype from when they were considering which colour system to adopt in the UK. I didn't realise what the hell it was at the time (1985) and I turned it down.
"There is not one flaw in the convergence on this set. It is absolutely perfect!" The color killer works well, too, when the signal gets weak. That is a good set.
Man oh man. You must have a high tolerance for just "fuck it, try it" with these things. SO many of those things, I wouldn't even consider plugging in until I've cleared out the dust and crud from the boards. Really surprising to see that Toshiba at the end. LOVE these videos!
A treat to come home trashed after a long day and find a long Shango video. I don't collect TVs but today I got an old computer monitor for free. It reads *_Radio Shack TRS-80 Video Display_* manufactured December 1977. Looks like it's a modified TV, the case has holes to accomodate a telescopic antenna. It turns on, shows a white screen, bright tube. No idea what could do with it.
I just read the labels more carefully, it actually says _RCA Model no. KTR 122S_ in the back. Would like to figure out what kind of interface it uses, so maybe I could display something on it with a microcontroller or something. If else, guess I could feed a composite signal into it.
That Toshiba Blackstripe TV working just fine is giving me hope tomorrow the one i'm getting tomorrow works. That is if its not listed with some crazy flipper price.
I've got a BK Precision CRT tester I bought new back when having one was the thing. It's the model 490. They really come in handy to verify the CRT condition. If folks only knew the kinda money a tech has in all their test jigs they'd understand why we had to charge so much cause that's how we paid for it. Great videos Sir.
Fantastic, I watch every one of these TV videos, its the exact opposite of how I work on tube electronics and yet if find it quite intriguing. Like Mozart vs. Death Metal. I use a Scalpel you use a Chainsaw. My favorite are the Push and pray moment when you turn the power on. Id be on the isolation transformer, Every electrolytic checked, Variac, 100 watt bulb in between, B+ on the volteter etc etc. Plug it in and duck works too. Them flyback transformers though, they can be scary stuff.
Those RCAs were in every motel room when I was a little kid. Also, those GE Compactron tubes really came to life at 19:45 when you could clearly hear Kellyanne Conway start one of her sewage-filled spewages...
you know american televisions were built with great quality .much better than gold star (aka) lg ,and sony .zenith. blew sony away in picture quality and sound .Zenith was made in chicago of austin ave. on the north side of the city . i use to live in chicago when zenith. was still in business back in the 1980's .i remember. you couldn't. bring a camera. in the plant .i remember. the tube division off north ave in melrose park close to the main plant in chicago .zenith was spread out on the north side of the city . i wish the government. bailed them out like gm .didnt they know zenith was america last television. manufacturer in america .
how bout a desert EOL party,,lawn chairs, turkey crts, your fav hated pop music vids, commercials,a crate of quarter sticks, brewskies, snacks, slo mo go pro video of the boom booms
Awesome bro I like everything you stand for that video of the barbecue and & tv that was great📺📻📺🎞📼📸 I like the vintage tv & repairs and a little impatient I'm sorry I enjoy all your videos I just had surgery recovering at home
Shango066 that comment at the end about the porno made my day Lol also I just got done restoring a Emerson with the identical chassis as the one in your video (I have a video on my channel of mine) the plastic parts are super brittle including the plastic that holds the Slugs in the coils. even though it is High hour it still makes a okay picture I completely restored it. if you decide to try and get yours working let me know and I can send you the Sams in a PDF file for it, it's super hard to find being it's not a common chassis.
Cool, whats the sams number? I have most of the set in filing cabinets. I thought I fired that one up and it kinda worked, maybe it had bad caps or im sure it does
+shango066 it's sams 702-1 your's is just the tabletop version of my console model, I believe it's the same sams it covers several different models and looks to be the same chassis :) I remember in your video it already had a new horizontal phase detector which is a plus, if you do make a video on that set it could definitely be interesting! I found out mine from the factory came with a cap that did not match the schematic in the I.F/AGC section it was supposed to be a .01 but instead was a .47 and you could tell it was original so I don't know how it even worked when the set was new, when I got it restored it was throwing off the horizontal sync till I changed it to the .01 the schematic listed, I also talked to other TV collectors and I guess it's not uncommon for Emerson to put wrong caps or underrated values in their sets, would definitely be a good set for a resurrection video!. if you find out you don't have the Sam's let me know and I'll email it to you, I had to pay $22 for a "digital copy" of the sam's from there website which was a rip-off really for just a schematic and is probably worth more than the entire set, so if you find out you need it I'll just send a copy of the pdf file so you don't have to pay there ridiculous prices as well! by the way your videos are great! being completely honest it's more entertaining than cable/pay TV I probably watched close to all of your videos.
Cool, ill put it on the short list. I did kinda work I remember that. The last few tv videos have been a real pain with copyright issues. I will try and check out the video you made on it later today
I bet the only things worth while are the working tubes if any . well you did get one working set out of the deal. well well now we know what fun things you are thinking of . good idea I love the vintage designs of the sets and they really have changed a great deal. thank you for sharing this all the best always
Too bad that Bradford wasn't from the 60's. It would be made by Westinghouse and their color sets are a rare find. Bradford was W.T. Grant's private label brand.
The sad part is I had that and the older one with the double series string had the 29kq6 horizontal and 30ae3 both in separate Strings that set was newer with the 40kg6
Reminds me of when I was in electronics trade school $@#& years ago & working on some of those old sets. A classmate accidentally touched a live flyback transformer. He found out why we called it a flyback!
Even better, it is perfectly possible to replace the gun with a brand new one. I don't think there is still a factory in the world where they do it, but I know for sure it has been done in eastern Europe up to a couple of years ago.
Would there be a place that sells CRT / Tube testers anywhere anymore? If I have to go to eBay that's fine as well, but even though I've only got some 8 tubes I got out of a Zenith radio (a double diode, two pentodes, a triode, an unknown small tube missing some pins, and one with a plate cap?) that I don't know if they're in functional order. I don't really want to do this for a job per se, rather as a hobby because I always thought tubes were cool, and when I finally got into electronics, tubes were all but gone (ca. 1980).
Wow, a "dirty dozen" (or nearly so). You have enough of those RCA's to make a few of them work, with one for parts. How do you still have some analog TV stations on the air in LA? Mexico?
merchafluerchafletrr?? barchafleurrmafleurrmaaglarre?? ..gee, that didn't take very long: "bleep, click." . excellent. it's amazing how that INSTANTANEOUSLY, they realize that they're not dealing with the realitive chaff of the aremikan puBliK. ..knowmmsaYYinn??

The Radio Shack "trash 80" computer did indeed use a TV (GE I think - I had the actual TV) but without the tuner circuitry.
Judging from the labels, I think it may be an RCA. It has a DIN connector coming from the front.
+MisterTalkingMachine you might be right about it being RCA. It's been a long time.
I just read the labels more carefully, it actually says _RCA Model no. KTR 122S_ in the back.
Would like to figure out what kind of interface it uses, so maybe I could display something on it with a microcontroller or something.

I wonder I you could make a video in which you explain how these CRT testers work and what all these readings really mean.
I don't know, for some reason I kinda like that Emerson TV.
That Toshiba Blackstripe TV working just fine is giving me hope tomorrow the one i'm getting tomorrow works. That is if its not listed with some crazy flipper price.
"Give the booty a little pinch" that's entertainment right there lmao
Now shango has tubes and parts galore.
24:20 that is a neat little fly back... I hate to use the word cute but I'm inclined to agree with you.
I've got a BK Precision CRT tester I bought new back when having one was the thing. It's the model 490. They really come in handy to verify the CRT condition. “Nope, nobody home” LOL
Wow, some real nice specimens there! But just like people, we could all use a little rejuvenation to come back from the dead!
Wow! I was wondering when I was going to see sparks in one of these electronic restoration videos! Now I'm satisfied! Well done!
That TV at 20:00 sounds like its screaming in pain
I want that Toshiba!!!

That GE sounds like a car when the belts slipping!!!!!!!
I love the styling on the Emerson at 13:44. really cool look on that thing
13:48 one of these days I'd like to see you push as much voltage as the tester can supply into a dead CRT, just for shits and giggles.
My grandparents had that GE compaction set. If I remember correctly it was kind of heavy for the size. None of us was allowed to mess with it.

Shango, something like that Bradford, what do you do? I assume you salvage the tubes, but how much further do you go to disassemble and part it out?
My Aunt had that Emerson set. It was on one of those metal tv stands. I was a kid but I believe that was a sleep timer.

Wow: Analog TV lives! I just looked up KZNO-LP. They broadcast on analog Channel 6!

LOL “ not on my watch “. I’ve never seen you wear a watch!
I wonder what was the most worn out crt on this channel?
My grandparents had a little Toshiba like the one at the end. Except theirs was a tan case. They had it in their kitchen.
Do you have any videos that show the parts needed to make a black and white set to show color ?
This is considered a classic!
I bet the only things worth while are the working tubes if any . well you did get one working set out of the deal. well well now we know what fun things you are thinking of . good idea I love the vintage designs of the sets and they really have changed a great deal. thank you for sharing this all the best always

Remember brighteners? Doubt if you could find one in 2017 except in a broken TV. You must be as old as I am.
The third one is a Motorola!
Surely the first Panasonic would make a good parts set; those things were well made.
I am sure there is red mercury in the broken image lamp inside the TV😍
20:57 wow, and that did something
The end comment was great 😂
nice scores on that lot, Love the resurrection!
If you wanted to fix up one of those Taiwanese RCA sets, it should be pretty easy since you have three parts sets at your disposal.
Reminds me of when I was in electronics trade school $@#& years ago & working on some of those old sets. A classmate accidentally touched a live flyback transformer. He found out why we called it a flyback!
9:44 I always wondered, couldn't you just create a vacuum again and reseal it?
Even better, it is perfectly possible to replace the gun with a brand new one. I don't think there is still a factory in the world where they do it, but I know for sure it has been done in eastern Europe up to a couple of years ago.
@@1959Berre I found a video of a group of people doing just that! ua-cam.com/video/_Q5bEGikmNQ/v-deo.html

How do you still have some analog TV stations on the air in LA? Mexico?
where did you find these? video? your description tells me nothing and i cant find the video on my own. anybody knows?
Emerson is even junk today. The swap meet turntable video... Case and point.
i have one of those blue ge tvs and it works but it has an open coil so it will no longer do anything.
Do you keep tubes and parts from sets you can’t save?
Bradford - W.T. Grant Department Store. Could be Easterthen U.S. transplant to California. Grant operated out there too?
what happens inside the picture tube that makes it weeks at first then "wake up"?
Love watching your videos!
When I he broke the ac power cord from the tv it scared the living shit out of me when sparks came
Same here! I screamed & nearly threw my phone.
i was expecting it, as soon at i saw the black marks near the base, Seen it before myself.
I think that Bradford TV set was sold by W.T. Grant see--> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._T._Grant
Yep, Bradford was W T Grants electronics line
Man..where do you find room to store all of your electronics?
+Guardian Observer He doesnt sell everything
+ddorfpunk1 234 Very true. A collector buys but never sells.
oh look a terracotta pot shaped like a tv. and free dirt!

What exactly does rejuvination do to the elements
Seems like it overvolts them and heats them up. Not sure what that'd do, possibly burn off a layer?
It applies a bit more voltage than normal to the heater & then when you press the button it dumps a charged capacitor across the grid-cathode connection, this burns off some of the emissive material off the cathode to expose a fresh layer.
