I thought so too...he brought out Serling's character in a genuine heart-rendering way, but with a quiet dignity as well...just a terrific performance.
I met Jack Palance in 1979, when he shot an episode of 'Ripley's Believe it Or Not' at the US Army Corps of Engineers-Waterways Exerperiment Station-Environmental Research and Simulation Laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi where I worked. He sat under our one-of-a-kind rainfall simulator in a yellow raincoat and hat.
At one time he was a heavyweight boxer under the name Jack Brazzo. During his career he had a run of 15 straight victories, 12 of which were by KO. He lost a close decision in 1940 to a rising young boxer who was eventually the #2 ranked heavyweight (Joe Baksi) who at some point lost a bout to Ezzard Charles. Had he won, Baksi would have fought Joe Louis for the heavyweight title. So that gives you an idea of Palance's athleticism.

I will always remember Jack Palance hosting "Ripleys's believe it or not". He always added to the stories with his unique voice and flair. That was a fantastic show.
No one has mentioned Mr. Palance in the western movie - SHANE /1953 ... playing the bad guy real well, and the gun fight near the end, taking place in a saloon is one of the best, as is the movie ... with Alan Ladd, Van Heflin, Jean Arthur, and a young, but talented Brandon De Wilde.

I have read many biographies on Dorothy Kilgallen. This most brilliant journalist was said to be “ the woman who knew too much”regarding the Warren Commission final conclusion regarding the Kennedy assignation, was murdered to silence her from divulging her conclusions. Do the research!
Maybe you gotta just take my word for it as a long standing fan, this was not at all who Fred Allen was as a person, or what his comedy was like for that matter, at least when he was in control of his material and format (which he definitely wasn't on WML). If you read bios of him, it's astounding to read what everyone who knew him had to say about him as a *person*; he was a universally loved man (by all but network and ad agency executives), one who lived humbly and gave away huge, unknown portions of his income supporting countless strangers and ex vaudevillians down on their luck. He used to walk around with wads of bills in different denominations to give out to the regulars on his walks, to the extent that he would pay in advance if he knew he would be out of town for some reason, knowing that these folks depended on him that much. His radio comedy was notably aggressive for its time, very acidly satirical in particular towards radio and radio executives, but as a person, he was a pussycat. So maybe it's what I know about him outside the show, but when I hear Fred Allen say something inappropriate on WML-- which definitely happens, I certainly don't deny that-- I hear a guy who wasn't good at the game flailing around trying to be funny or at least to latch onto to any observation that would nudge him towards a relevant question. When I hear Hal Block say something inappropriate on WML-- which happened *constantly*-- all I hear is a boob. As I've said elsewhere, you just can't get a good feel for who Fred Allen was if all you've been exposed to is seeing him struggle through WML. :( Fred Allen defense rant over!

Galileocan g Check out Fred's autobiography MUCH ADO ABOUT ME, if you can. It's a wonderful love letter to old-time vaudeville and relates the large amount of dues Allen payed to become a star. He literally had to go halfway around the world to Australia and New Zealand to get bookings!
+Galileocan g I've read many comments on these videos about remarks that WML panelists made which would be considered very inappropriate these days. Having grown up during the 1950's and 60's, I can tell you that such remarks were not meant in a mean-spirited way and it was quite common for people (especially male buddies) to give as well as they took in that area. After all, very few of us don't have some feature that isn't picture perfect. (That's how caricaturists get their subject matter.) Among friends, if they knew someone was sensitive about it, they'd lay off. But being able to take a ribbing and give one back in good humor was considered a very positive trait in such circles. And it was the basis for comedians like Don Rickles: no group got singled out or skipped over, including the ones that were part of Rickles' identity.
Watching these in sequential order, I've noticed that's often the case. He's a very rude person. I can read fans talking about how wonderful he is, but just based on WML (and I don't know him from anywhere else), he comes across as so brusque and curt and insensitive. I know the times were different, but some of this is just dignity and common sense in public. I think he's rude. He also makes fun of people's gainful employment. Not cool.

I absolutely ADORE the ladies' dresses in this episode - Arlene's flowing dress was elegant and glamorous, while Dorothy's sleek black dress was ever so chic!
I really enjoy this show. I was 4 when this one was shown, but don't remember it. But it does bring back memories of the 50's when I was growing up. Thanks for sharing.

Almost impossible to fool this incredibly intelligent panel, especially the celebrity guest. They didn’t get them all but they got the majority of the professions. Great show that I enjoyed as a child

My favorite of all time. Saw it in the theater when I was 6. Watch it apres ski every January, now. The location is a magnificent supporting character.
Fred Allen's quip at 5:40, "Do you think the President is giving the country another Gettysburg address?" needs a bit of explanation. After retiring from the military, General Eisenhower bought a farm near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, about 1950; he had a heart attack during his first presidential term in September 1955 and spent some time at the farm recuperating after his six-week hospital stay was over, so his "address" was newsworthy at this time. "Giving the country" proved true after all: the Eisenhowers donated the farm to the National Park Service in 1967.

This is the first show that the panelists make separate entrances in the center. This was suggested by Arlene to "show the dresses" on a prior show and the letters from the audience must have been overwhelmingly in favor. 2 episodes later, the "What's My Line?" shown at the beginning is superimposed over the picture, finalizing the beginning of the show.
And the superimposed "What's My Line?" two episodes later is in upper-and-lower case letters, unlike the logo on this show which is all uppercase. It's the same typeface and similarly uneven placement and angles of the letters, but it's not really the same logo.
The first episode to feature separate entrances was November 13, 1955. November 20th had them stationary in their sears again. This is the second time.

you have to go into settings and change it. I have no idea why it is an option. I watched a video of the Swedish chef from the muppets, they intentionally put in funny subtitles as an option. that made sense there, especially since you can't understand the Swedish chef, but here, it makes no sense.
The Secret Service man has the most serious and executive look on his face. A no nonsense kinda look. Like "alright, let's get this over with so I can get back to work".

I think you're right, the volume level is unusually low. I'm sorry to say though I really can't fix this. With my current setup it would take me hours to first fix it and then upload the replacement video. I hope it's not a problem in other shows-- this hasn't come up before.
Yes, I do and I've had similar problems with the last couple (in sequence) prior to this. It's not horrible, but a little low. Certainly not so bad as to spend a lot of time fixing it. I'm was just glad to find out the problem isn't on my end.
Yes, it's true that the audio portion is so low as to be almost incomprehensible. However, in such situations, I always keep a set of earphones handy--such as the ones I'm using right now! (It makes a world of difference.)
In this 1955-1957 collection the last 3 or 4 have been quieter. If you have a video editor open the video, "normalize" the audio and then re-render the video.

Jack Palance plays a really good Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde. 1968. He is excellent as a vicious Southern gang leader during the Civil War in: The Desperadoes 1969, unfortunately the film was hacked to pieces, carelessly censored, and totally ruined, more than any other movie of the time or since, and no complete print seems to be available anywhere.
These shows started coming up in my recommended because I looked up Dorothy Killgalen in relation to JFK conspiracies. I had never heard of her. I’ve now watched a few of these and I knew who Tony Randall. I’ve never heard of most of the others, in the episodes I watched. I’ve never heard of Jack Palance. Interesting guy though. I love that everyone is dressed up. They seem extremely polite and well mannered. Of course this aired 68 years ago and my grandpa is not even 68 years old. To me this is ancient.
Yes, I'm right. I'm watching this from episode 1 through in order, and at first I thought it was a fluke, but it's not. There's the same boisterous and blustering guy yelling in the audience as part of the routine, week after week, the same guy. I understand they're plants, to rile the audience up. But yeesh, this is really over the top.
I’d noticed the laugh too and you’re correct that it could be a plant. But having been to a number of TV tapings I’ve seen the warm up guys laugh enthusiastically to try to get the crowd going. It’s also possible that it’s a member of the stage crew since directors and producers are sometimes at stage level during the shows.
@@cuttersboi08It's my friend Jim Obrian we were teenagers,and would take the train 15 cents each for token, from Brooklyn and watch the show. The theater was built above the train staion very noisy. No fee, we sat in the middle of the audience and Jim would hoot and hollar. Attended 2 x a month 😅

One of them is named Gabe. With a few other hints, I'm guessing it has something to do with gambling and cards! Hmm. Could this be the reason audio is so low? With my eyes I SEE WML, I see the text, they just don't fit together as crazy as it sounds, could two different shows be "supernaturally spliced" one over the other? Why yes! Yes, I DO hear the theme of Rod Serling's "The Twighlight Zone" running through my mind..
I'm not sure what the deal is but every program since about the beginning of Sep '55, the sound is barely audible. I've got my computer speakers on full blast and can barely hear the program.
Bamberger's parade was in Newark, New Jersey, home of the flagship store of that retail chain. Macy's bought them out but kept the Bamberger's name at this time, then folded them into their own chain later. Hudson's parade was in Detroit and as far as I know is still going on under the name of America's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Obviously, the 1950's were far less "politically correct" than today (yet, conversely, certainly more mannerly and polite), but it's still a little jarring to hear Fred just come right out and tell the second contestant that he "looks heavy." Usually, the panelists would use polite euphemisms like "robust" or "healthy." Another example of Fred's alleged discomfort at being on the panel manifesting itself in what I'm assuming is unintentional rudeness. On a more pleasant note, Dorothy looks especially lovely tonight, with her black "wiggle" dress making her look unusually curvy.

The volume on this video is way too low. I do like the series, and have watched a number of episodes, but I had to dump this one, as the only way to hear it clearly would have been to cram the phone against my ear. I already had cancer once, and don't want brain cancer, so I never put the phone against my head. Sorry I can't watch this episode though. I like Jack Palance. I think that the first time I was allowed to stay up really late to watch a TV show, was for a Dracula movie, with Jack Palance doing an excellent job playing the blood sucking fiend. My father was watching it with me, but fell asleep on the sofa. My mother used to watch this show during chores when I was very young. I would often be hanging around while she did the chires, so I am familiar with a number of old shows she watched, and am now enjoying them decades later in my mid sixties, except for the soap operas. I've never liked soap operas. Real life is more than enough of a soap opera for me.

Almost impossible to fool this incredibly intelligent panel, especially the celebrity guest. They didn’t get them all but they got the majority of the professions. Great show that I enjoyed as a child

My favorite of all time. Saw it in the theater when I was 6. Watch it apres ski every January, now. The location is a magnificent supporting character.
Fred Allen's quip at 5:40, "Do you think the President is giving the country another Gettysburg address?" needs a bit of explanation. After retiring from the military, General Eisenhower bought a farm near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, about 1950; he had a heart attack during his first presidential term in September 1955 and spent some time at the farm recuperating after his six-week hospital stay was over, so his "address" was newsworthy at this time. "Giving the country" proved true after all: the Eisenhowers donated the farm to the National Park Service in 1967.

This was a really great tv show but I don't think an updated version of this would work today.

This is the first show that the panelists make separate entrances in the center. This was suggested by Arlene to "show the dresses" on a prior show and the letters from the audience must have been overwhelmingly in favor. 2 episodes later, the "What's My Line?" shown at the beginning is superimposed over the picture, finalizing the beginning of the show.

And the superimposed "What's My Line?" two episodes later is in upper-and-lower case letters, unlike the logo on this show which is all uppercase. It's the same typeface and similarly uneven placement and angles of the letters, but it's not really the same logo.

I always liked jack palance.I watched Bronk,when new, and also his movie of Dracula, and Ripley's Believe it or Not.He created an LP, during the 1970's, and it can be had in CD form now.I can barely hear this.

I think you're right, the volume level is unusually low. I'm sorry to say though I really can't fix this. With my current setup it would take me hours to first fix it and then upload the replacement video. I hope it's not a problem in other shows-- this hasn't come up before.
Yes, I do and I've had similar problems with the last couple (in sequence) prior to this. It's not horrible, but a little low. Certainly not so bad as to spend a lot of time fixing it. I'm was just glad to find out the problem isn't on my end.
Yes, it's true that the audio portion is so low as to be almost incomprehensible. However, in such situations, I always keep a set of earphones handy--such as the ones I'm using right now! (It makes a world of difference.)
In this 1955-1957 collection the last 3 or 4 have been quieter. If you have a video editor open the video, "normalize" the audio and then re-render the video.

These shows started coming up in my recommended because I looked up Dorothy Killgalen in relation to JFK conspiracies. I had never heard of her. I’ve now watched a few of these and I knew who Tony Randall. I’ve never heard of most of the others, in the episodes I watched. I’ve never heard of Jack Palance. Interesting guy though.
I love that everyone is dressed up. They seem extremely polite and well mannered. Of course this aired 68 years ago and my grandpa is not even 68 years old. To me this is ancient.

Yes, I'm right. I'm watching this from episode 1 through in order, and at first I thought it was a fluke, but it's not. There's the same boisterous and blustering guy yelling in the audience as part of the routine, week after week, the same guy. I understand they're plants, to rile the audience up. But yeesh, this is really over the top.
I’d noticed the laugh too and you’re correct that it could be a plant. But having been to a number of TV tapings I’ve seen the warm up guys laugh enthusiastically to try to get the crowd going. It’s also possible that it’s a member of the stage crew since directors and producers are sometimes at stage level during the shows.
@@cuttersboi08It's my friend Jim Obrian we were teenagers,and would take the train 15 cents each for token, from Brooklyn and watch the show. The theater was built above the train staion very noisy. No fee, we sat in the middle of the audience and Jim would hoot and hollar. Attended 2 x a month 😅

One of them is named Gabe. With a few other hints, I'm guessing it has something to do with gambling and cards! Hmm. Could this be the reason audio is so low? With my eyes I SEE WML, I see the text, they just don't fit together as crazy as it sounds, could two different shows be "supernaturally spliced" one over the other?

There used to be 3 Thanksgiving parades? On the same day? Must have really tied up traffic! I guess they loved their parades back then.
Bamberger's parade was in Newark, New Jersey, home of the flagship store of that retail chain. Macy's bought them out but kept the Bamberger's name at this time, then folded them into their own chain later. Hudson's parade was in Detroit and as far as I know is still going on under the name of America's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Obviously, the 1950's were far less "politically correct" than today (yet, conversely, certainly more mannerly and polite), but it's still a little jarring to hear Fred just come right out and tell the second contestant that he "looks heavy." Usually, the panelists would use polite euphemisms like "robust" or "healthy." Another example of Fred's alleged discomfort at being on the panel manifesting itself in what I'm assuming is unintentional rudeness.
On a more pleasant note, Dorothy looks especially lovely tonight, with her black "wiggle" dress making her look unusually curvy.

I agree. Dorothy looked very attractive, as usual, but I think it would have been Arlene, whose figure was shown off perfectly by the cut of her gown, who would have been more likely to inspire plenty of "ooh la la" remarks by the guys. I know for certain that "Steve Morgan" would have whistled.

The volume on this video is way too low. I do like the series, and have watched a number of episodes, but I had to dump this one, as the only way to hear it clearly would have been to cram the phone against my ear. I already had cancer once, and don't want brain cancer, so I never put the phone against my head. Sorry I can't watch this episode though. I like Jack Palance. I think that the first time I was allowed to stay up really late to watch a TV show, was for a Dracula movie, with Jack Palance doing an excellent job playing the blood sucking fiend. My father was watching it with me, but fell asleep on the sofa.
My mother used to watch this show during chores when I was very young. I would often be hanging around while she did the chires, so I am familiar with a number of old shows she watched, and am now enjoying them decades later in my mid sixties, except for the soap operas. I've never liked soap operas. Real life is more than enough of a soap opera for me.
