Twelve years ago my husband and I wanted to break up, silly misunderstandings, thinking that going our own way would be better. This song learned us that nothing in the world could replace the feelings we still had for eachother, that noone else could kiss us ever without reminding us of eachother, and that separating would mean that there always would be missing in our lives and that there would be no winners, only two lost and loosing people. This year, we will be married for 25 years.

Ha, so many people hid their ABBA records under their beds in case their so called friends saw them, fear of ridicule, why? Such great songs, sung with great tuneful relish, pop songs at their best, there has always been a difference between pop songs and album songs, dictated by the record companies, they all made money, music is a business after all, feel sorry for so many artistes that could not give us what they were capable of.
Agnetha always said that she absolutely loved to interpret sad, emotional songs. Agnetha also admitted that after recording this song in the studio there were tears. But by the time of this TV-performance above Agnetha already had been in a relationship with a Swedish business man.

ABBA songs were all this lighthearted and sometimes a bit cheezy songs that my parents would listen. Then I heard "The Winner Takes It All" and made me realize how powerful and emotional this song can be, reaching you deep inside and make drop a tear by the sadness and heartbreak driven by the lyrics. Imagine being so heartbroken and yet you keep on the last one, to keep on as the show must go on even if it is the last one before the curtain falls.
Definitely one of their better songs musically with poignant and powerful lyrics. Glad you discovered it. The best music was made in the 70's and 80's, in my opinion.
@@Kurt77777 Thanks, one of their better songs, far the lighthearted and cheerful ones that were raging all over. The 70s and 80s were indeed fertile for creativity and experimentation and really enjoyed how Benny and Bjoern experimented with early synthetizers. It was really anything under the Sun and give a try in getting popular with local gigs. Nowadays, the music seems so bland, so generic, with no place for taking risks with rising stars.

To know the real events behind this song just listen to the interview of ABBA group discussing the divorce. You will see why the song feels so soulful. It is simply because what you are listening to is her feelings and not words.
Same Germanic language stem and also same roots. Old English and Old Norse (Vikings) where heavily influenced of each other during the Viking age (8-11th centaury), hence a lot of grammar and words are still shared. Swedes have an easy time learning English and German :) We sound a lot different now adays, but the roots are the same, so picking up Swedish as an English speaker would most likely be a lot easier than trying to learn some urgic or romance tree languages.

The best ever. When she sings" does she kiss like I used to kiss you does it feel the same when she calls your name" sends a shiver down my spine Every time !
They spent their time, energy, and effort on making great music instead of a wild show with lots of gyrating and grinding. To maintain the musical voices they have, it would be impossible to jump all over the place without the strain showing up in their voices. I like their presentation better than those that try to wildly dance all throughout the song. Just my humble opinion.
thank you ! Lucky us, we've known this time, we were kids then but today we keep the good memories. It helps. Believe me... "Merci c'est vrai ! et nous gosses à l'époque on a connu ça, aujourd'hui on garde de bons souvenirs. ça aide. crois moi"
Here I am at 84 hearing the footsteps of the angels 2 years after my last post and enjoying ABBA as always. I do believe they are good enough to join the Heavenly choir if other requirements are met.
The way an artist can 'contain' himself or herself whilst singing about something so gut-wrenching and life-changing in their lives is indeed a marvel, dear James-of-Schult. But this group just has too many brilliant hits for me to determine which one was their very best ... you know?!? Most of their hits were hip-shakingly and ear-shakingly good !!! You know?!?
Well, Agnetha's ex-husband Björn had written the lyrics. And Agnetha stated in several interviews that she has always loved to interpret sad, deep, emotional songs.
LET ME MAKE IT 2,000,000,000 !!!! HOW CAN ANYONE NOT LIKE THE CLASSIC BEAUTY OF AGNETHA AND FRIDA. ABBA WERE TOTALLY AWESOMMMMMEEEE!!!!!! SUPER 70'S AND AWESOME 80'S FOREVER. ROCK ON C B AND C A !!!!!!!!!!!.
IF perfection exists in music than this song should be a perfect song.. vocals are huge.. lyrics fab..this song will be played ever and ever.. it s an eternal song
"and I understand...you've come to shake my hand"...gets me every single time dammit...such emotion and meaning *sigh* ... the sign of a brilliantly written and performed song...well done
Maybe the best pop song ever. Even the 30 Secs intro. That's music. Reduced to the max. But also a little opera in one song. And even the lyrics. ABBA on it's top. Never better.
"Smoke on the water" isn't really pop, more rock, even hard rock, hard to compare. But I think it is only a super great riff with a good rock song arround ;-). My favourite in this area would be "Better the devil you know"
I have disregarded Abba for so many years never giving them a chance due to maybe over exposure and cheesy films but I started listening to them the other day and I haven't stopped since,so many masterpieces its hard to pinpoint which song is the best.
unfortunately this is because these days, they wouldnt sell as much. groups, or artists that created the music for abba would nowadays be working behind the scenes.

@Stan Eb Pelton Its pretty difficult when you're really close to someone and you have to get over it. I would have liked this song to have been a duo, it is still absolutely a stunning rendition and lyric, but I sort of wanted Agnetha to sing some lines and then Frida, on their own and then somehow both of them .............. just imagine Not taking away from the greatness of this song, it would have been just as beautiful if Frida had to sing it
I'm nearly 70 and have seen so many great groups in my life, but ABBA remains one of the best . . .so nice that we can enjoy their performances over and over again here on UA-cam. . .

Agreed , Abba were quite unfassionable among muso snobs in the 70s but they produced amazing melodies and moving lyrics , This song for me is their best
Trevor Garrard Yes they were. I still think of my brother saying how much he loved ABBA. I did not get it. I liked Andante Andante and Nina. Pretty Ballerina. My brother loved this group when they were uncool. Now any cool DJ or industry pundit will say they loved them in the 70s. They did not. My brother did. This is one of tneir best, most moving songs.
No matter what people say... ABBA made some of the most memorable and touching songs ever! I am old enough to have heard a lot of music, but I always end up here. Awesome!
I fell in love with this song from TikTok & had no idea it was so old. I also didn’t know there were more lyrics then what is on TikTok. Such a beautiful song. It’s so perfect. It’s liberating while also being extremely painful & emotional. It’s beautifully perfect.
I was a teenager when this song debuted. How i loved this band and this song in particular. It brings back such sweet and painful memories of dating in high school. Oh! all that romantic drama, ...the many broken hearts, sometimes me, sometimes them, but always, always.........."The winner takes it all" and you know just how painful that felt after a breakup. Long Live ABBA
Damn. How many of you can't even sing through this song without feeling a lump in your throat and wanting to cry? Such incredible vocalization, background harmonies, piano accompaniment, and just simply the overall feel of the musical composition.
CruiseControlOne I gotta go, sniff. my allergies are, starting to cry! umm. Ive listened to it tons on mp3 , but watching her pour her heart out with him next to her ....it hit me like a buick outta nowhere like Brian's song. dude. this is maybe the greatest song ever
I love this song, a true masterpiece. But this song was never meant to be a 1:1 description of Agnetha'a and Björn's separation and divorce. Björn had said he was just a bit inspired by it, but it was not written especially for Agnetha. At the time of this recording Agnetha was in a relationship with a wealthy Swedish business man.
So True Twenty years ago i have been riding the White horse of life Now when life is limiping out from body, i can feel the lyrics I wonder it took so many years to get down to soul pf the song Just noticed the SCORN in her eyes The pain oozing out through voice and eyes
@@zachsplawn9131 No, of course not. But you misinterpret something: Agnetha had always confessed that she truly loved to interpret sad and emotional songs as there was so much she could lay into it. She's a master of this. At the time of this TV-recording, however, she had a relationship with a wealthy Swedish businessman and had moved forward with her life. I am just saying this, because some comments said that they saw tears glitter in Agnetha's eyes.... And although Agnetha confessed that the separation and divorce from Björn certainly hadn't bee an easy time, she also wasn't more willing to stay in that marriage than he was
I had the same situation at home, I know that terrible feeling it is the hardest thing for a woman to survive, these people who live their children have no hearts! 😭❤️❤️
You know this song had to be hard to sing because of her cheating husband. I watched an interview of her saying she didn't want to sing the song because of the pain, but she wanted to let others how much he hurt her and their family (their young son). There will never be another group like ABBA. Music where you can close your eyes and just feel it.

I've heard thousands of songs sung by countless great vocalists. None are better than this. None. And English is her second language. MINDBOGGLING.
Most Scandinavians can speak perfect English as the language is related.
Why is picking up Scandinavian language so difficult for an English speaking person, then?
@@ieronimo18 because they dont have to. Besides, its a one way related language
