I never comment on videos but I had to come back to this one. I tried this and instantly gained about 50-80 feet. My discs are flying completely differently than they ever have. Thank you!
At the start of the video, I was thinking "what the hell is he going on about, this makes no sense". By the end I was completely convinced this is the most helpful nose angle tip I've heard. Great stuff, looking forward to trying it out, thanks!
First of all... GREAT CATCH! Secondly, this video is incredible. Love how you guys keep coming out with new ways to explain what we should be doing. These little cues go a long way, so thanks for always being willing to innovate and try new things for the community instead of repeating the same tired advice that never really clicked for some of us.
I tried this today and wow!! Huge success. One thing I noticed is I wasn't getting any height because I wasn't used to it but even 20 feet off the ground the throws were gliding and flying the right shape. Thanks guys!
This is BY FAR the best tip I've gotten to date. As a new player, I really struggled keeping the nose down. This tip literally doubled my distance. Thank you so much!
I made a playlist of all the nose down videos from my favorite content creators. I took this list and my tech disc out to practice, and this was the video that worked. The flipping up the back of the disc was the way to go for me. Thank you! This is the only video I've found that explains nose down in this way.
This is huge! I really can't thank you enough for this Mikey. Went out to the field today to try this tip and for the first time ever my 9 speeds flew nose down and with the correct flight! Consistently threw over 300 which has previously been my max distance on a good day. Can't wait to continue using this mental cue
Watched, thought "Let's try it." Grabbed my son, went to our local course...and on my second throw, a 318 ft par 3...GOT MY FIRST ACE EVER! Star Sidewinder, 2nd oldest disc I own. I'm 50 years old, primarily forehand thrower b/c every backhand throw goes 250 feet :-) BUT NOT TODAY!
Everyone always told me to "pour the coffee" and that never helped me with nose angle. This is more of "turn the key in the lock" but explained much better.
Woah! I'm 75 and just now getting into this wonderful sport. I can't wait to try this. Even though I've thrown a few Frisbees around, I totally underestimated the difficulty in throwing these much heavier discs straight, flat and far. I realize that there really isn't any point in trying to progress in the sport, until you can learn to release flat. Thanks! Take care and be well my friend.
Great tip video!! I want to add a warning though. I tried this yesterday in field work and my for arm kills today. It does work, but I would advise you stretch your forearm twice as much as you normally do during your warm up and the first sign of sting or tingling either stop or flatten your launch angle a little bit. When sitting around watching TV, work on your stretches to your forearm. I'm going to give myself about a week of stretching before I practice this technique again. The results were instant and unbelievable, but I need to get my body ready for it.
So this is a MASSIVE THANK YOU coming from someone who has heard, “Just pour the coffee bro” for like 10 years and literally never understood what that actually meant until now. You guys just fixed my nose up driving problem with this one little mental queue. Seriously, thank you from the bottom of my heart!! Your channel has the best coaching content on UA-cam hands down.
YESSS! I've been saying this for a while now -- it's about BOTH "pouring the coffee" AND "turning the key" (aka "flipping the disc" in this case)! It's because the disc is released at ~10-11 o'clock and not at 12 o'clock or 9 o'clock. If it was released at 12 o'clock, then "pouring the coffee" would be the only way to get the nose down. If it was released at 9 o'clock, then "turning the key" / "flipping the disc" would be the only way to get the nose down. But since it's somewhere BETWEEN 12 and 9, then BOTH are necessary. Great vid, thanks!
Yep this is exactly it! If someone can just put the disc at the 10 o'clock position, and adjust the nose angle to the compromise of two cues, that's ideal.
Gave this a try today and finally got some flat, straight drives with mid-flight turn! My timing is still horrible but at least the disc is pushing forward instead of stalling out and dumping left.
I love and thank you and Josh for all of your training with nose down. My only thought would be able to shave the hard throws, with a VERY! slow motion camera. Blessed love. The old guy.
This legit was a lifesaver. I tried everything under the sun and couldn't get nose angle negative. But this tip gave me nose down 95% of my throws last night with the tech disc. Now to reign in how nose down. Haha I was averaging -6 nose angle. So now to dial it in. But to give it 19 launch and still be nose down is huge
So I watched this video and it made a huge difference in my ability to throw nose down(have a tech disc so have good data) but at the same time I went from avg maybe 15% hyzer to throwing almost flat. So whatever I’m doing is getting nose angle down but it’s causing me to throw flat or even ahny, even when I’m not trying to. And I can’t fix it. Lol. From what problem to the next. I want to emphasize how long I’ve been trying to throw nose down so am deeply appreciative of this video!
This is my problem as well. My wrist does not let me 'pour the coffee' easily. To compensate I end up anhyzer. I'm assuming this tip will lead to more of that.
My experience is that when you do the flip near the release point it does not appreciably affect the hyzer angle. I have a bunch of throws where my nose angle varies but it doesn't impact my hyzer numbers much.
Not gonna lie, when I first clicked this I thought it was another of Mikey's spoof videos, and I may or may not have been a little disappointed that it wasn't...lol. But man what a great video! Amazing tip! You know I'm trying this! Nice job Mikey!
No exaggeration, this might be the most important disc golf instructional video made yet. I'd bet that 90% or more of MA3 and below players struggle with this and "pour the coffee" is the go-to advice and entirely NOT a fix for the supination that this cue fixes.
I'm MA1 and struggle with nose angle and distance. Luckily courses where I'm are wooded and don't have holes over 350ft typically. This exact thing I've been working on a little bit, but after this video I'm going to put a lot of focus/time into. It's nice to have this confirmation that it will work.
My first nose down throws came in a lesson with Josh with an earlier form of this verbal queue. Now I am trying to drill the feel of the nose down angle into my body. Consistency is difficult and the nose angle drifts quite a bit. The good thing for me is that the nose + launch angle work has halted my pendulum style backswing the had me throwing launch angle negative with a positive launch angle. The final thing I am looking at is if I should try to do the entire backswing nose down or just flip it at the hit. Speeding things up or not focusing on the "flip" still does show I don't have it in muscle memory though. Figured I would personally attest to the methods in this video by another techdisc user
Good stuff, I've also found that throwing with a reverse swoop but still a positive launch angle can get extreme nose angles (-8 is my best), not sure if it's as practical but say I want to throw 10 degree launch angle, if I reach back at 30 degrees then reverse swoop to a 10 degree launch instead of a 30 degree launch, even without any "turning the key" this gets a lot of nose down. Id rather stay on throw plane since it's simpler, but turning the key feels just as advanced of a mid-swing adjustment, but probably better.
I literally went out and tested this right after the video and got amazing results, thanks! -5.8 nose angle with 13 degree launch angle and close to my max speed! I tried this before but it felt like too many moving parts that time, but this time, I did a lot of slow warmup throws with standstills to get the feel of it and then it felt pretty natural when I powered up: ua-cam.com/video/JvvnPn6oEbU/v-deo.html Expose more of Josh's secrets, please!
This is actually what i did to learn how to throw the overstable discs & go further, i thought i was imagining it, then i really put my eye on it as i did it, and realised, im at a point where i seem to throw alright but every now and then i start to get stuck on my front leg and twisting and slightly straining my butt muscle 😂
Yes, but it's actually easier to rotate your wrist into a nose down angle, than keep it on that angle once you get used to it. Try to keep it relatively flat and flip it a little bit. When you rotate into a nose down angle, your miss will be flat instead of trying to maintain a nose down angle and accidentally throwing nose up. I remember seeing a good vid from Gannon burh on this subject that helped me.
yeah that should actually help a lot, thanks for the breakdown there. i naturally tend to flip nose up so this should help correct that both in thought and action
Imagining Josh checking in with his morning cup. Yup, there's Jon. So let's talk about coffee. Pouring the coffee at peak reach back was effective but I didn't like the tension of wrist locking downwards (That's why the call it pouring the coffee for all of you not reading this. Perfect analogy). But there was another issue for me in my form in that that's another cue. Peak reach back is heel down, nose down and the weight shift into the brace. Too much neural load for the Pentium 2 CPU in my head. In one of Danny Lindahl's last videos I saw he had this outward wrist flick he would do at peak reach back. At that time my RHBH was OOC and I was training a LHBH that wasn't going well. Trying that Danny boy wrist flick felt natural in a field of very un-natural things. Shout out to Danny Lindahl (Easy boss, this was pre-OT to me. relax) . So, here's the thing. to me and maybe to some others an adjustment during release point is an advanced thing where your in synch. You have the timing and weight shift into the brace on lock. Then you can do the Mikey technique. I'm not there yet; I haven't field tested it enough to say Danny's wrist flick at peak reach back is a nose down alternative to Mike and pouring the coffee but it does feel like a turbo charge pull into the power pocket.
So I’ve only had a chance to try this a little bit but at least on my early attempts this seemed to result in disc coming out on an anhyzer. Does this suggest something is wrong about my hand position at the point of release?
Been trying this for weeks and I have no problem flipping the desk over to get nose down. The problem is getting the positive launch angle. I watched the video Josh did about throwing nose down in nine throws, and that guy was having the same problem, any suggestions on drills?.
Gonna be honest, when I go watch slow mo of top players, I don't see a wrist flip and I don't see them finishing palm up. Either I am misunderstanding the point of the drill or it isn't what pro's do.
@@dillonwhitten5212 try to flip the disc over your forearm the way he describes but hold on to it. It will spin if you don't let it go. Wrist should be straight at all times, at least feel wise. As you pull the disc forward into the pocket, the weight and momentum will push against a straight wrist and cause it to bend slightly. This allows you to use opposing forces. The wrist is pushing away from the target. The disc is pressing into the wrist, towards the target. This will cause a strong release.
Forehand is active wrist to make spin, backhand is a strong wrist to rip the disc out of your grip and create spin. At the moment of release on BH, your wrist should be steel, the disc should weigh ~25 kg's and nothing you can do will keep it in your hand.@@dillonwhitten5212
This activates your biceps by means of the distal biceps tendon, which is responsible for supination. It's the only way through a backhand throw to get any action from the biceps, in addition to forcing nose down.
I cannot possibly describe how excited I am to use this to screw up my form on the course later this week! is there anything in the flight of the disc that would indicate to you that you need to be making a correction with nose angle? I'm thinking mid-round when you might start getting tired or losing focus; what you would be looking for as an indicator that you might need to employ this technique into your swing thoughts?
I cannot wait to get to the field and work on this! I've been playing 6 months and I've managed to thrown nose down twice. So frustrated. I think this could change everything.
Is Overthrow going to give a follow up to this question? I've tried the tip and yes, you can get it nose down but it impacts the release angle. More detailed follow ups would be appreciated.
Isn't this the "turn the key" tip which has been shared for long while? Just recently noticed it to be much more helpful for nose angle than the "pouring coffee" tip. However, at least for me external rotation makes elbow dip more easily and does not feel as powerful internally rotated pull-through.
I have the tech disc, I bought it last September, and I was wondering if they have the Android app for it yet and if so How do I get it since it's not in the Android store?
I tried this, and it wasn't quite working for me, but when I instead focused on having my thumb flip up in my follow through...I FINALLY FOUND A WAY TO THROW NOSE DOWWWWWNNNN!!! So for me it was the same motion that you're describing, I just needed to think about what my hand was doing after the disc left it, not what it did during the moment of release, and then the magic happened. Now all my discs are in low earth orbit and I need to buy new ones. Anyway, I love stuff like this. Thanks! Also, if Mikey can do the video AND then content...why is Josh?
I have 2 questions. 1) Did Josh coach you on this technique before or after OT trained with a techdisc? 2) If it was after, and we don't have a Techdisc,; Can it be dialed in without one? Without the stats, this seems to me a last stage tweak to a well oiled machine which this guy is not.
I can see Eric Oakley's form in my mind; I don't have to look it up on UA-cam. Eric and Danny worked together a lot on physics of flight. But I don't think Eric did Danny's outward flick at peak reach back
Great tip! Any chance you could create a bit of video showing what nose up and nose down discs look like to the thrower immediately after ejection from their hand? When you watch someone else throw discs from down fairway and off to the side, nose angle is comically obvious. How about teaching us all how to train our eyes to see nose angle from behind as our disc rockets toward the basket? A flat throw should look like a thin horizontal line while nose up gives a sliver of top view and down a sliver of bottom view. Maybe it's like sexing chicks (not what it sounds like) at a poultry farm and no one can explain the ability yet everyone learns how intuitively with experience? I gotta say, whenever I witness a really good drive, it's obvious as hell, watching from behind near the tee box, that the disc is flying nose level as it slices effortlessly through the air.
It actually reduces the chance of off-axis torque because it puts the disc at a better angle. When you throw nose up you increase the chance of wobble because the disc travels too far off-plane. It's not that simply throwing nose up creates the wobble. It accentuates the wobble that you get. Everyone has different levels of it. Nose angle problems make it worse. 🙂
Okay another Zen moment. There is no spoon. I hated pouring the coffee technique for nose down. Too much tension in the wrist too early on peak reach back. thank you Mikey
Kills me that Mikey can stand still and throw faster and with more spin than my best throws! Running off to the net to try this tip with my tech disc right now!
If you flip it like that, wouldn't you be releasing it on a anhyzer? Thats how i move my hand when i want to change my angle. I dont get how that makes it release nose up or down. I throw nose down a completely different way. Imagine if im shaking someones hand, i exaggerate my wrist angle pointing down....
What the heck is the point of pouring the coffee when this works so much better and seems like less strain on the wrist? Pouring the coffee (ulnar deviation) is a much more awkward wrist movement compared to the larger and more prominent movements: pronation, supination, flexion, and extension.
I had unsubscribed from Overthrow Disc Golf after the ARM the disc video as I felt that was another long form video that just wastes the viewer's time. Not the first video that has done this. This is a much better video, tight and more concise. Still not subbing again yet but at least you guys are back on my radar.
Imo, alot of am's are throwing too much angle and the wrong stability. Throw nose down flat shots with a neutral disc, and work your way out from there. Philo had a good video on throwing flat hyzer, flat, and flat annhyzer angles, and if you combine this tip with those angles you have pretty much every shot you will ever need, besides utility shots like rollers...
My question is what drill can I use to become 6 foot tall with really long arms? I'm a little under 5' 6" right now, and I feel like this is really limiting my distance. Well, that and a lack of coordination and skill. But if I could just grow those last 6 inches, I'd be golden.
As an am who used to struggle with being 5'6" myself, turning 14 was the cue I needed to really stretch my game to that 6' mark. If you haven't tried turning 14, I strongly recommend it.
Ok, I tried. It's hard. The disc has a lot of momentum and trying to flip the disc up caused anhyzer release a lot for me. Keeping the back of the disc up for the whole throw wasn't the right trick either So far, it's only costing distance accuracy, but Imma keep trying it. I get my longest throws when I just try to be smooth and natural with the form I've developed over the years
Every comment: OMG YOU CHANGED THE WAY I THROW THATS INCREDIBLE!!! Me: *tried this once and the disc went 120 feet almost completely behind me and hit a car*
Have watched it several times. Still thinking this is intentional oat. Which we have been told not to do until this video. You might want to clarify somehow
We haven’t ever used the term off axis torque. If this cue creates OAT for you then don’t use it. It obviously doesn’t for Mikey or AB. Use the cue that works for you.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf just ment in general not anything from you guys. Must not be my cue as it did not go well with everything coming out anhyzer and short
@@troyruggersame thoughts here. You'd think they could do more of a clarification than "just dont use it" when clearly lots of ppl on here seem to be having the same issue and also having hard time distinguishing the "flip" from the feel of putting on OAT (yes, OAT is a thing whether or not overthrow has said it, lol). The motion feels very similar to me to what I've been working to remove from my releases over the past few months.

Good stuff, fellas
The reflexes on this kid! Clutch catch of the day 😂
Thank. You.
Been trying this for weeks and I have no problem flipping the desk over to get nose down. The problem is getting the positive launch angle. I watched the video Josh did about throwing nose down in nine throws, and that guy was having the same problem, any suggestions on drills?.
This was such a good video. Now that it’s been a few days, has anyone applied this change and found that their elbow is very sore?
Gonna be honest, when I go watch slow mo of top players, I don't see a wrist flip and I don't see them finishing palm up. Either I am misunderstanding the point of the drill or it isn't what pro's do.
Ive been throwing nose down but also into the ground since practicing this. 😂
Guess i need to practice launch angle now
That’s a great problem to have!
What is the advantage of flipping in either direction as opposed to starting the disc the way it should finish? Does it affect shoulder rotation?
It creates the spin
My impression is that spin is mainly created by your wrist unfurling. Please elaborate
Aren't you worried about a hyzer coming out anhy then?
Is Overthrow going to give a follow up to this question? I've tried the tip and yes, you can get it nose down but it impacts the release angle.
More detailed follow ups would be appreciated.
Isn't this the "turn the key" tip which has been shared for long while? Just recently noticed it to be much more helpful for nose angle than the "pouring coffee" tip. However, at least for me external rotation makes elbow dip more easily and does not feel as powerful internally rotated pull-through.
Yeah. Just a different cue to think about :)
I have the tech disc, I bought it last September, and I was wondering if they have the Android app for it yet and if so How do I get it since it's not in the Android store?
Yes, it is available. Search for it as techdisc
Curious on what the optimal negative nose angle is?
Josh says -4 based off of a research paper
Is it showing the nose angle compared to the horizon, or compared to the launch angle?
I would assume compared to launch
Confused, how does throwing nose down (edge up) relate to throwing hyzer which appears to be edge down.
Why is Josh
@@OverthrowDiscGolf That's merch I'll buy. Just saying.
Mikey here. The world in which Josh isn’t the face of our channel is a world you don’t want to live in Lolol 😂
@@OverthrowDiscGolf well, this video just added +102' to my throw, so he'd better step up his game.
It’s literally Josh’s tip 😂
You should have used the “soup nation” mnemonic! I am all about soup nation in making sure I throw nose down ever since hearing that from you guys!
#soupnation
Hooked it into the neighbors house, thanks! 🔥
lol. Rip
Did you guys rehang that door? Looks so much better now.
We did not
I have 2 questions.
1) Did Josh coach you on this technique before or after OT trained with a techdisc?
2) If it was after, and we don't have a Techdisc,; Can it be dialed in without one?
Without the stats, this seems to me a last stage tweak to a well oiled machine which this guy is not.
1) It was a cue I gave him
2) I had the cue before tech disc. It’s how I got my nose down originally. It was later verified through TD
If you can see the stamp/top of your disc at all then it is likely nose up. You want to see the inner rim of the disc as its flying in front of you.
Explain to me how this doesn't create off axis torque?
It actually reduces the chance of off-axis torque because it puts the disc at a better angle. When you throw nose up you increase the chance of wobble because the disc travels too far off-plane. It's not that simply throwing nose up creates the wobble. It accentuates the wobble that you get. Everyone has different levels of it. Nose angle problems make it worse. 🙂
Wait what? I'm going to have to try this... Maybe it will cure my bonapane blues.
Okay another Zen moment. There is no spoon. I hated pouring the coffee technique for nose down. Too much tension in the wrist too early on peak reach back. thank you Mikey
This makes me throw anyhyzer!
That probably means you’re chest is open to the target at release
Kills me that Mikey can stand still and throw faster and with more spin than my best throws! Running off to the net to try this tip with my tech disc right now!
If you flip it like that, wouldn't you be releasing it on a anhyzer? Thats how i move my hand when i want to change my angle. I dont get how that makes it release nose up or down. I throw nose down a completely different way. Imagine if im shaking someones hand, i exaggerate my wrist angle pointing down....
Kinda crazy I always thought nose angle was down pointing down away from my body not toward the target initially. Potentially a game changer
What the heck is the point of pouring the coffee when this works so much better and seems like less strain on the wrist?
Pouring the coffee (ulnar deviation) is a much more awkward wrist movement compared to the larger and more prominent movements: pronation, supination, flexion, and extension.
Mikey is an absolute bomber! Casual 65 mph standstill. #Standstillnation?
Yeah, seeing this and Nick Krush's standstill 520 footer. ?!?!
I had unsubscribed from Overthrow Disc Golf after the ARM the disc video as I felt that was another long form video that just wastes the viewer's time. Not the first video that has done this.
This is a much better video, tight and more concise. Still not subbing again yet but at least you guys are back on my radar.
Ok
Imo, alot of am's are throwing too much angle and the wrong stability. Throw nose down flat shots with a neutral disc, and work your way out from there. Philo had a good video on throwing flat hyzer, flat, and flat annhyzer angles, and if you combine this tip with those angles you have pretty much every shot you will ever need, besides utility shots like rollers...
I didnt shave my arms today so I can try this tip out tomorrow
Perfect 👍 lol
No coffee was spilled or poured i the making of this nose down video!
My question is what drill can I use to become 6 foot tall with really long arms? I'm a little under 5' 6" right now, and I feel like this is really limiting my distance. Well, that and a lack of coordination and skill. But if I could just grow those last 6 inches, I'd be golden.
Manabu and Emerson Keith are two short homies that can throw far. This ain't basketball.
As an am who used to struggle with being 5'6" myself, turning 14 was the cue I needed to really stretch my game to that 6' mark. If you haven't tried turning 14, I strongly recommend it.
Physically get stronger and work on becoming more explosive. Physical strength is overlooked in disc golf. It will help.
Mason Ford is also rather short with big distance, learn the form and how to feel the hit.
@@jjhill001Can personally confirm. Played with Manabu at SeaTac in WA last Fall and he was parking 400+ft holes with mids.
I believe the Tech Disc site warns users not to throw into screens, but it doesn’t seem to be doing any harm to your disc.
Right. We’re kinda testing it at the moment
Twist it. Bop it. Push it.
This is making sense to me. Does flip and slap make sense? Cause I think it might. Haha
This looks like adding more possible variation error to a throw instead of just keeping your wrist position the same throughout the throw.
Ok, I tried. It's hard.
The disc has a lot of momentum and trying to flip the disc up caused anhyzer release a lot for me.
Keeping the back of the disc up for the whole throw wasn't the right trick either
So far, it's only costing distance accuracy, but Imma keep trying it.
Not surprising actually. If you do this it forces your grip to the rim a bit more and your fingers can’t slip out from under the disc as easily.
Anthony Barella calls it turning the key.
AB describes this as “turning the key”
MIKEY i could kiss you. I knew something was wrong with my wrist but nothing I tried ever work BUT THIS DID!!! Thank you!!!!!
@@honjarvey for my first interaction with this page it felt snippy and short. I won't be bothering again.
Or as Anthony Barela says... "turn the key"
Is there a video of him talking about this cue?
@@pontusstromberg7499 Go to Anthony Barela's page and find the video titled HOW FAR CAN I REALLY THROW? (feat. Grace). At the 5:27 mark he tells her to keep the nose down and turn the key.
The forearm hair is $ cue
isn't that another way of explaining (an)hyzer?
Definitely not. Different wrist movement
whats up guys whats up whats up guys guys whats up…..
