In the 90's, when the Gracies first brought BJJ to America, the premise was taught that the safest place u can be in a fight is a clinch. Whenever i asked of defense techniques against biting, gauging, & groin shots, i never got an adequate response. I've used groin strikes & I've been bitten in clinches in fights, so for that reason, I've never studied BJJ.

Mathematicx: I agree. You can also add to that the fact that BJJ says virtually nothing about MULTIPLE attackers not to mention, I am still looking for ONE knife defense that does not make me shake my head.

Multiple attackers no doubt you don't want to grapple at all, eye gouging and scratching isn't going to win a fight though. Freestyle wrestling is the shit, nobody on the street expects you to change levels lol! Around here atleast!

@@XMartinv90x I agree, my first street fight went to the ground I was in top mount and he gouged my eyes until I put him to sleep. If you're in a bad spot and you choose to scratch instead of defend the submission or immediate threat you're going to get put out most likely.

TO THIS FORUM: 1) Some people wonder why I do not show the ratings for my videos. The reason is that they are too honest and many "garage" martial artists are in denial as to what real street violence is about. Although this video got many more good ratings than negative, 4 people saw it fit to give it a thumbs down lol. No doubt they are those well to do BJJ fanatics who have never had a street alteration outside of their fenced in backyard. Those people do not get a free pass from my channel. 2) MOST of you still have not seen the issue with grappling. You do not realize that you are talking about ONE ON ONE,WEAPONLESS fighting. That is where the mistake is made: MANY street confrontations involve MULTIPLE assailants and /or a weapon! In BOTH cases your grappling CANNOT be as you all described. TRY AGAIN lol.

Hi Sayf, I was wondering if you could do a video demonstrating the 5 take downs you talked about in the video. I would also be really interested in how you set up these take downs. Would you actively look for the take down or would you only go for it if you happen to end up in a clinch situation. I am a low -level bjj practitioner and I appreciate the reminder that alot of what is taught does not make sense in a street fight. Thanks.

I was ambushed by 6 man around 7/6 months ago I was pushed and I almost fell on the floor and I knew if got on the floor I was fuck so I rolled backwards onto my feet and I was swinging it out with them, until knives where getting involved so I split. Great lecture, much needed. I grapple because it's my best weapon, my hands aren't as good but I can control people pretty well in a clinch, in a clinch I can bite and gauge. I've melted people into the ground and in every street fight I've been in (minus the times I've been jumped). In most of my fights I've had relatives (cousins) or friends with me so I never had to worry about getting sucker punched or soccer kicked, and my best take down is the single leg. But now I see it's vulnerabilities, I'm guessing take downs using clothes manipulation and maybe some kind of leg sweep is more fitting for the streets.

I grapple because I was recommended to it to help my Rugby tackling. The place I went to was BJJ but the coach taught HS wrestling and drilled us on those takedowns in addition to giving us light body blows when we ended up on the bottom while saying "gotta move".
That was 5 years ago. I keep it up for the fitness and I have to be honest and say for my ego. Body control is good and all, but this channel is spot on about the brutal honesty of fighting. F-it, I have pepper spray because this isn't a duel. If I fight I intend to live and BJJ isn't going to help me.

I grapple so I can become difficult to manipulate(my body). I do not want to be just like a rug that a powerful person can lift, and slam to the ground. I grapple so if I ended trapped under another person's weight, limbs, grip, and strength; I can escape... then get up, then run or get back to fighting standing up if I choose to.

If you are training in LE or MIL, there are times when you may hope to bring an arrested Criminal or Terrorist into compliance, without cracking their skull, in order that they might give you more information about other Criminals or Terrorists in their web during "interviews" of such upon incarceration. There's a time and a place for everything - even this grappling device :-) - ua-cam.com/video/xuYmMS5iDds/v-deo.html
However, when such may pose greater risks to the Operators in LE and MIL than reward, i.e. a Criminal or Terrorists armed with an edged weapon they have already cut someone's head off with - shoot them!!!
In the grey area - you need to be well versed on all grounds, for stated purposes, as just mentioned.
For personal defense, if, where you live, authorizes concealed carry - DO IT, get the training needed to make you proficient in being able to employ such under stress; and, accompanying empty-hand skills in order to facilitate break of contact in order to put an equalizer such as a firearm or other concealed weapon into play (obeying local laws of course - as some devices like a Fast Strike, may or may not be legal where you live - ua-cam.com/video/i_pQDzaCwtc/v-deo.html).
You cannot dictate the terms upon which you might be attacked. To consider such is absurd. Anyone is prone to being bumrushed by a gang of evil-doers, closing on them rapidly in an engulfment, in a crowded place, wherein, you might well need to know how to deal with having a whole bunch of hands on you, all at once - necessitating grappling experience.
It's nice to fantacize being Donnie Yen playing Yip Man against 10 blackbelts and never getting into a grappled position, but that ain't reality. You need to be well balanced - but also realize, if you are bumrushed by a gang intending to football tackle you with 12 on one, you might need to bite, claw, and pinch some space - open, in order to employ strikes, to get you even more space.
This one time - 24 inmates from one cell, and 24 from another, came towards the doors of their cells and said to me (I was sealed in the Boss Man compartment for the 48-man wing - and therefore couldn't just run out into the open hallway for rescue, i.e. as a safeguard to isolate such things):
"Hey Boss Man, we can pick these locks from both sides and you wouldn't have a chance." I said:
"Yep, I cannot kill 48 men - however, I'll do my best to take out the intial wave and I ain't pulling no punches."
They replied, shrugging their shoulders and backing off the doors - "Boss Man is crazy."
Ultimately, all fighting, armed, unarmed, with nuclear bombs even, boils down to this one question:
Is each life sacred - did God truly make us in his image (Genesis 1:26), and do we have a God-given right to defend that which God has made?
If so, then Romans 13:3 is true - "The authorities are not a terror unto those who do good; but to those who do evil."
Answering that - you have to then consider, what is evil in the sight of the Lord? And I'm talking about the Lord Jesus Christ here - as Romans 13:3 points to authorities in a Judeo-Christian context.
Considering that - and Christ' message to us - that this is not all there is, the best is yet to come, and the joy of the Lord is our strength - Nehemiah 8:10, in Christ, we who have believed on him and in so doing, will not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16), owe it to those who cannot defend themselves, to know everything there is to know about war - in order to contend against such as would desire to kill, rob, and steal, such lives and liberties as, at least in America, we here see is worthy of defense -
Life (ALL life - and not just, "Innocents" as some Islamic terrorist see "Innocents," as only Muslims - whereas, anyone else is not considered - "Innocent"), liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and freedom and justice for all, as our Constitution protects and Declaration of Independence proclaim, and as our rules of law contain, according to such, at least, that was my solemn oath when I took both LE and MIL oaths to serve and protect the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic - and even,
earned a Masters of Science in Strategic Intelligence, in Denial and Deception, and how to identify, exploit, and defeat foreign intellignece activities designed to attack such as our Constitution provides, as an Honors graduate of that program - Denial and Deception Advanced Studies Program.
But God will not be mocked - see Psalm 2 and read Revelation 19, for a start. The CIA, NSA, FBI, MOSSAD, ISIS, or whatever other acronym under the heavens, and those employed in their causes, are not going to win the war for our souls. Christ alone has, already, and said of such in John 16:33 -
"In the world you shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
I rest in his peace, righteousness, and ability to raise me from the dead, not mine. And for such, lay down my life in order that others might be free to know him as well, through his Word, the Bible - and defend such with all my heart, mind, body, and spirit, in continuing training of one who was redeemed, who was once lost, but in Christ, was made whole.
Be not decieved, fighting and physical exercise, as the Apostle Paul mentioned, offers little value, and can become a very - false idol. Christ has ALREADY overcome this world. It is finished.

There’s a misconception that if you grapple you’re first option is the ground. In BJJ the goal is to stay on your feet, get back to your feet and if you can’t there are other options. I train BJJ for self defense, most street fights I’ve seen end in a headlock, 100% of the time they don’t know how to get out of it. I’ve used principles from BJJ at work dealing with aggressive youth, just knowing where the weakest part of the grip is eliminates a lot of problems.
Easiest way to look at BJJ is like soccer, basketball, or football; you don’t shoot a 3 pointer if someone can’t block your strong side, you just take the layup. You don’t shoot from the box if no one is around, and you don’t throw a slant across the middle if the other team can’t stop the run game. Once you know how to play the game it’s about what moves have the higher success rate. BJJ is about options, what do you do when you fight an untrained person; now what do you do when the other person also knows BJJ. The same as boxing you learn to throw the jab but you also learn how to react to a jab.
The right move done at the wrong time is the wrong move

The worst possible postion would be to fight somone with your back on the ground and an opponent on top of you. BJJ teaches you how to handle that . Noone should jut pull guard in a fight unless its all you have..in which case you might stand a chance..Wrestling is awesome for getting people to the ground, but what then?
