- Did control of this small town in West Virginia (Virginia until 1863) really change hands 56 times during the Civil War? Kris White of the American Battlefield Trust details all things Romney, West Virginia from the spot of one of Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters during his Shenandoah Campaign.
Look for our numerous videos on UA-cam over the next week, and special thanks to all the donors who helped make this trip possible!
I am born and raised in Romney and all my family still lives there. Romney is a such a beautiful small town.
General Jackson is my 3rd great cousin on his mother's side Julia B Neale Woodson. My great great grandmother Mary E Winn (Walton) was his 2nd cousin. I am a member of MOSB.
I suppose you mean 3rd cousin, as there's no such thing as a great cousin, 3rd or otherwise.
I'm Jackson's grand son. My mom was his daughters grand daughter I mean. What is MOSB?
I live in bunker hill wv this area deserves the historical recognition you guys are giving to us on our areas civil war history. Thanks you guys

Have visited Romney a few times, very interesting place. That whole area is steeped in history. I am a Buckeye born and bred and joined the Civil War Trust many years ago. I contribute to the American Battlefield Trust regularly, though modestly due to my circumstances. Preserving our History is very important!
I lived in Winchester for 15 years... so much Civil War history this this entire area. These videos are very well done. Thank you.
I live in York, Pa. Winchester is on my bucket list of civil war places to visit.
So enjoyable to watch. Well done Gents! Thank you for sharing!
Great information and gave me insight of a relative born and raised in Confluence, PA and participated on the Union side of this.
Just catching up to the ABT now.. Thanks Garry for continuing with these great videos!
The friendship between these two guys is amazing.
The northwest turnpike he talks about comes straight out of Washington DC through wv
This was a surprise. Thank you ABT.
I used to drive from Winchester, through Romney, periodically. I knew a little about Winchester but never knew anything about Romney.
Tremendous wealth of knowledge and really well presented.
Great stuff!!
Thank you very much sharing this
Love your video giving coverage to smaller places in the war. But Romney being western is stretching it. Glad you covered it
Thanks for sharing this. I never realized just how close Romney was to Winchester & how it related to the turnpike to the Ohio River.
Romney is the oldest town in WV.
Ppl from shepherd might disagree
Thanks so much for the interesting history of CSA / US in Va and W, VA . Most only have a H.S. knowledge of what happened, so much more to the war than most have been taught.
I went too the deal school right across from this home I saw it every day
I had a total of 4 ancestors that served in Virginia regiments on both sides. One great great grandfather served in the 7th (West) Virginia and was killed at Antietam, and another great great grandfather served in the 4th (West) Virginia and lost a leg at Vicksburg. On the other side I had 2 great great uncles. One was in the 1st Virginia (Irish) Battalion and was listed as missing after Antietam and the other was in the 36th Virginia. He was the only one who came through the war unscathed.
I had family in both armies as well, as well as Mayor Beckham of Harper's Ferry (killed by John Brown's raiders). Two brothers (both Union) and a cousin (Confederate). One of the brothers (Ohio regiment, the specific one is debated due to a transfer that occurred in July 1863) and the cousin (Lt in a Virginia Artillery unit) fought each other in Gettysburg. They both survived the battle but the Lt., a direct ancestor of mine, would be killed at Yellow Tavern, the same battle as Jeb Stuart.
TJ is my favorite. His foot cavalry loved that turnpike.
Still amaze me distance they covered in very short time. Tough men. Stonewall himself fall asleep few times on horseback not uncommon on all them walking or riding fall asleep. Stonewall & a apple tree getting stuck was funny 1.

Angels were sent down from Heaven to Bear up Stonewalls Soul.... They could not find it so they flew back in Sorrow.... When they got to the Golden Gates above.....They found out by a Rapid Flank Maneuver he had already Cut away in.....🙏
SAD!!! WV schools just RE-Named Stonewall Jackson Middle School!!!!
Makes me sick!!!
The liberals are in the process of re-writing our history and the it has been speeding up quite a bit over the last 10 years or so. It is sad.
@@DannyWalker247 Yes! Very sad when ot gets home here in WV.. Thats outside stuff normally.. u know... But the ADL, and SPL have Targeted sites around the Nation to attack, shame, and change into something that is not, or is to be forgotten... We The People are going to have to fight it out eventually if we continue to be victimized..
@@DannyWalker247would you prefer it renamed Donald Trump's 1-6 insurrection? Traitor is a traitor imo. We shouldn't hold traitors to the country we live in to such high standards. The winners rewrite history. Remember?
I have the mort kunsler print of jackson's March on romeny
I would love to do some metal detecting in the area
Martinsburg bunker hill are other civil war places there's a interesting civil war battle on the parallel road to the one there on 522 in unger wv right on state line
You could have hit the civil war spot on the west side of Romney. Fort Mill up on the high ground.
There are only two monuments that contend for the title of "first", one in Romney and one in Cheraw, SC. The Cheraw monument was dedicated on July 26, 1861, the Romney monument was dedicated exactly 2 months later. Technically the Romney monument is first because it was inscribed to "southern rights", the Cheraw monument was inscribed later. There was a Federal ban on inscribing monuments in the south, but the West Virginians were sneakier and did it secretly.
Please don't tell this. The liberals will come after them. Quite few of my ancestors have CSA information on their tombstones and I am worried that they will try to destroy them.
Banks was allegedly fond of shell.
So was Stonewall Jackson ever actually in that house?
It's the only house Jackson ever owned. He lived there while he was the Superintendent of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.
There's a lot of "Mitt' around Romney.
Mitt needs to swing
Actually, that Romey family has nothing to do with this Romney. And in 2012, they were definitely not Mitt supporters.
Guys, is this now a family home, is it still in the White family, or is it a museum open to the public?
My religious beliefs teach me to feel as safe in battle as in bed God has fixed the time of my death I do not concern myself with that but to be prepared whenever it shall overtake me That is how all men should live then all would be equally brave

PLEASE...learn the difference between these WORDS: CA-VAL-RY and CAL-VA-RY. It was the CAVALRY that was the military term! Good video, but the mispronunciation of THIS WORD drives me nuts!
