All these sightings of The Flying Dutchman, but nobody has ever taken a photo of the most famous ghost ship of all time?
P.S. The Flying Dutchman would be a great name for a professional wrestler.

I remember reading a book about the Mary Celeste many years ago. It stated that one, or more, of the barrels of cargo, had leaked and the contents, mixed with the air, had created a foul-smelling gas. The smell had forced the entire crew to temporarily abandon the ship until the gas could dissipate. Something happened, and they couldn't get back aboard, as the ship had still had its sails set for sailing. In essence, the ship left them where they were, and sailed away, to be found later with the hold cleared of the gas. As far as I remember, it was the major theory at the time.

I am former U.S. Navy, honorably discharged as Operations Specialist 2nd Class. On a clear February night in the Indian Ocean we tracked the Flying Dutchman
    Let me explain:
During an eastward passage across the Indian Ocean in 1994, I was on the midwatch (0000 to 0700). The aft lookout reported a light on the horizon, and moments later we had a weak track on the surface search radar (usually, we had the track before the lookouts could see them). The track grew stronger as the lookout reported the light getting dimmer. A few minutes of tracking revealed that the contact was moving faster than our ship (not surprising, our top speed was 21 knots), and would eventually overtake and collide with us. The Officer of the Deck on watch on the bridge woke the Captain. We tracked the contact until it was lost in the sea return on the radar. The lookouts could see nothing. The Signal-men on watch on the signal bridge could see nothing. We braced for a collision that never came. We watched the scopes and observed the track emerging from the sea return ahead of us. We tracked it out to about 16 nautical miles at which point the port and starboard lookouts reported a light on the horizon. The light grew brighter as the track faded, until it winked out over the horizon.
It was not an aircraft, definitely a surface track. The only submarines in that area would have been Indian Kilo class diesel-electric boats, and they would not have been able to pass us at speed if they were on the surface (if they were submerged, we couldn't track them on radar).
Therefore, I submit that we tracked the Flying Dutchman.

My favorite Flying Dutchman "legend" is by the late British author Brian Jacques. He wrote a trilogy on the topic call Castaways of the Flying Dutchman containing the books Castaways of the Flying Dutchman, The Angel's Command, and Voyage of Slaves about a boy and boy and dog who, being pure of heart, were washed overboard but were still cursed with agelessness and wander the world working to rid the world of evil. When they see that infamous ghost ship, evil is near.

Ship's mysteriously floating around and seeing from time to time, people stay away because they are floating hazzard and Mariners mark their position on a map, so other vessels don't run into them, and then they mysteriously show up thousands of miles somewhere else..
Old 4 or, 5 masted sail vessels, spotted by modern ships from a far, with seamen performing duties and ignoring or not seeing the modern vessel. Or rusted out ships that routinely spotted around the Cape of Hope or Horn, "trying to get around" 1 last time.
I believe that these are the "ghosts ship" stories people would expect when clicking on the video.

    Just sit right back
    And you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
    Aboard this tiny ship
The mate was a mighty sailing man
    The skipper brave and sure
Five passengers set sail that day
    For a 3 hour tour, a 3 hour tour
    The weather started getting rough
    The tiny ship was tossed
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost
The ship set ground on the shore of this
    Uncharted desert isle
    With Gilligaaan
    The Skipper too
    A millionaire, and his wife
    A movie star
    The Proffessor and Mary Ann
    Here on Gilligan's Isle
So this is the tale of our castaways
They're here for a long long time
They'll have to make the best of things
    It's an uphill climb
The first mate and his skipper too
    Will do their very best
    To make the others comfortable
    In the tropic island nest
No phone, no lights, no motor cars
    Not a single luxury
    Like Robinson Crusoe
    It's primitive as can be
So join us here each week my friends
You'll sure to get a smile
    From 7 stranded castaways
    Here on Gilligan's Isle!

The most plausible reason for the Mary Celeste I heard was built around it's cargo. Though not in the way you think. The key was that the hatch over the cargo was open. One issue they had with that particular cargo was it could be come explosive if spilled. The thought is one of the casks breached and filled the hold with fumes. They popped they hatch and for safety, got in the lifeboat while it aired out. Which would explain the rope that they found trailing behind it. They had played it out so they could reboard after an hour or so. Only rope broke. And since they had left the sails up, they weren't able to catch up.

What you didn't mention about the Ourang Medan, that I've heard from other sources, is that it didn't exist on the books. Meaning the name was possibly fake as no one could find it registered anywhere, backing the claims of transporting something illegal.
Also, your reference to "Eskimo" is considered offensive to the Inuit of Northern Canada and Alaska.

    • @MadTheDJ
      @MadTheDJ 5 років тому +6

Except, if that were the case for any of these, the authorities investigating would figure that out pretty quickly. The crew ashore or the company who owned it would be like, "Hey, our ship's missing."
And there would be records and witnesses (port staff like a harbour master, stevedores, merchants) who knew when the vessel departed its last port. Other vessels would have seen it travelling along regular shipping routes.
So that's the heart of the mystery, that a ship left port perfectly fine, fully crewed, and was later found with the crew dead or missing, with the valuable cargo possibly untouched.

They found the Bismarck on the bottom of the ocean a few hundred miles away from where the vessel was reported sunk. So unless the Titanic and other ships surface from the bottom of the ocean... I don't see that happening.
Only 110ish people were saved from the Bismarck and your more likely to find the sunken crew being spotted instead of the Bismarck! Probably 800+ sailors were left in the water in fear of uboats attack

@@TheArchangelSeth well, that does sound pretty freaking cool and Metal! I'd like to be on that vengeance ride! Unfortunately, those poor men were probably unaware of the genocide the Nazi's committed a few years later. They might be embarrassed and dry dock.
It'd be an awesome site to see that battle ship RISE! I believe it's still 1 of the largest ever built! Germany lied about it size because of the Treaty of Versailles. Unfortunately or fortunately, battle ships aren't built like that anymore. Cruise missiles and such keep the need for big BIG guns down.
I don't think a full broadside from a Battleship has been fired since the 80s! What a site, feeling and sound! Then 4 or 5 ships at the same time! My lord! Fireworks would never be the same!
But if the Bismarck rose jamming Vogner or Zimmerman (Classical composers) with 1/2 burnt 1/2 bones 1/2 crew blows out of the sea and are pissed off, Id run the other way

Someone (a author of a book about this) theorized that the Mary Celeste crew after finding leaking barrels of alcohol in the cargo hold secured a life boat with a rope to the ship and all aboard got into the lifeboat to trail behind the vessel until they felt it safe to reboard. However something happened and the trailing boat became separated from the Mary Celeste and were unable to catch it all perishing leaving the Mary Celeste to sail into legend.

Sorry, I'm sure this has been pointed out before but, the radio was turned to the universal distress signal? There is no frequency for a universal distress signal, I mean channel 16 or 64 UHF/VHF channel perhaps but that's a standard channel to have your ship radio set to. The distress signals that are universal, "mayday" or "pan pan" are signals sent, nothing to do with a specific signal channel.

Never understand why the Ebony Roslyn is never mentioned. A 60ft long tea clipper that vanished from a trade fleet during a storm. They recovered the ship four days later in calm waters with no crew but the captain's bird and the ship's mascot (a mongrel dog) alive and well. Only the crew were missing. The last entry in the log was not written by the captain, and whilst initially thought to be French it turned out to be gibberish with a few random french and spanish words thrown in. A skeleton crew was assembled from the other four vessels in the fleet and the ship was commanded by an officer from the Betty Clarke, the lead ship of the fleet. The officer began a fresh log, with the dog, bird, old log and captain's possessions along with any diaries and journals belonging to the crew sent over to the Betty Clarke for examination and storage.
Two days into the resumed journey, after the search for overboard crew was abandoned, there was a thin fog. This seems to have spooked the skeleton crew who insisted that strange voices and cannon fire could be heard. They lost sight with the rest of the fleet and both the acting captain and medical officer noted in their logs that the men were panicked and delusional but that the fleet had indeed gone from view. Both men put it down to the late watch having allowed the ship to drift from course.
It is worth pointing out that the other ships in the fleet never reported anything, no shouts of alarm, no cannon fire (the ships had no cannon. Only a few firearms and blades). Also the rest of the fleet's night watch reported that, whilst the fog did obscure a lot of the surrounding waters, they never lost sight of the Ebony Roslyn. Come the morning the skeleton crew abandoned the Ebony Roslyn and refused to return, leading to several men being put in the brig and the officers receiving demotions. Even so, they refused to return. A new crew was assembled and dispatched to the vessel, and it was moved into the centre position in the fleet formation. Each watch was ordered to keep in constant visual contact with a watch member on the Ebony Roslyn, so if anything strange _were_ to happen, the other ships could launch teams to investigate and lend aid.
At this point, the crews of the fleet were stretched thin. Many men were pulling double duties as the first skeleton crew were relieved of duty, a second had been formed and sent over to the ship and additional guards and watch members had been drafted. Scared, tired, four days from the nearest port and in curiously calm waters for the season, the various captains all noted that their crews were close to breaking. Three of the five ships ordered double rations for the crew to raise spirits with extra alcohol rations delivered at the end of the shifts. The two ships that did not were the Ebony Roslyn and the Red Esther.
The rations aboard the Ebony Roslyn were sealed in case they were contaminated in some fashion and the captain of the Red Esther was a teetotal Presbyterian who allowed no alcohol aboard.
The fleet now deviated from their course and made for the closest port to report the situation, get new orders and to offload the crew who had made up the first skeleton crew of the Ebony Roslyn.
The day before they were due to arrive in port, shortly after 3am, the Ebony Roslyn deviated from course and tried to leave formation. The Betty Clarke was forced to evade a collision at the last possible moment, causing several unsuspecting crewmen to be unfooted and to receive minor injuries. The Red Esther attempted to intercede and the Ebony Roslyn actually struck her across her bow, causing moderate damage and several holes below the waterline that needed to be attended with considerable urgency. Armed boarding parties from the other ships were sent aboard the Ebony Roslyn and found only two crew members, both seemingly having died in their sleep with no visible causes. The rest of the crew was missing, though various other clues suggested some conflict had taken place. A hatchet with blood on it had been buried deep into the ceiling of the main hold. Several recently fired guns were left, loose, on he floor of the galley, and all the water barrels had been smashed open. A bloodied shirt and rags were found on a table in the captain's quarters and the words 'never we yet, but this and no' were scratched into the door of the main crew quarters.
A total of fifteen entries had been made into the log, written in the same gibberish as the original log, making no reasonable sense and dated up to five days into the future. Despite the ship having never left the sight of the other fleet vessels and their watches, and with no life boats launched, the crew were missing.
Further more, the original skeleton crew who were either in the brig or confined to quarters were also found to be missing. Having effectively lost a almost a quarter of her original crew, the fleet's captains ordered a full room by room search of each ship. All off duty crew were locked in their quarters under armed guard.
They made it to port without further incident. However, the mystery was not over. The Frigate 'Boundless' had arrived nine days ahead of them, twelve days after they were supposed to have reached their final destination. The Boundless had recovered fourteen members of the Ebony Roslyn's original crew. They had told a tale of startlingly different events. The fleet HAD encountered a storm and been blown apart but had managed to find eachother again in the morning. In addition to the five fleet ships was a pair of ships, a clipper similar to the Ebony Roslyn and a smaller passenger ship who had both taken considerable damage from the storm. The crew of the Red Esther were effecting repairs on the two new vessels and the Ebony Roslyn's crew noticed a light hearted and cheerful attitude aboard the Betty Clarke where several ladies from the passenger ship and their crew had come aboard the Betty Clarke, bring fine food and drink as a means of thanks for their rescue. The crew of the Ebony Roslyn claim nothing was untoward until that evening when loud explosions could be heard from the rear of their vessel. The ship tipped and pitched and barely avoided being capsized. All of the survivors found by the Boundless had been thrown or had jumped overboard, at this point. The ship righted itself but rather than send men boats to pull men from the water, the entire fleet and it's two companion ships sailed off to the north, where as their course was west, northwest.
The crew clung to scraps of debris that had flown clear of the ship as it was thrown around and they lashed larger parts together to keep themselves afloat together. The boundless found these men after two days adrift.
The two stories were wildly at odds but the timeline and testimony of the Boundless' crew backs up the crew of the Ebony Roslyn. What is more, the fleet crew that arrived was in order regarding the listed manifest carried aboard the ships themselves, but the manifest held by the fleet's owners showed that, despite claims of lost crew etc... the crew that arrived in port was a total of nineteen men OVER that of the full fleet's compliment.
Whilst authorities in the port tried to determine the truth of events, most of the crew of the fleet escaped custody or abandoned their ships. The Boundless and another frigate in port were holed, quietly, at night, and the Ebony Roslyn and Red Esther were sailed out of port, though the Red Esther was later found adrift and taking on water not far from shore.
In total, 43 men were missing out of a total fleet compliment of 75 men. Many others did not fit their records, being listed as welsh but having a french accent etc.
The only crew members to be confirmed by their families as actually being who they said they were were a number of the rescued Ebony Roslyn's crew.

I've seen a ghost ship in the sense of a ship abandoned and adrift. Twice actually. As for ships of the dead... well, ghosts don't exist outside of the imagination.
The first ship I saw was the Cal'Shto. A small transport ship under civilian contract to the Royal Navy. It was meant to be delivering cleaning supplies and chemicals in the Mediterranean. The crew abandoned it after a gas leak. The captain reported deliberately running her aground to stop her drifting as the cargo was too heavy for the anchor to hold on the sea bed. Somehow the ship broke free and continued adrift and spent weeks missing until we spotted her after being tipped off by fishermen in the Canaries. We sighted her just after dawn and then we recieved a garbled, static filled transmission. Then we heard a series of pops, explosions from below the waterline, and she started sinking rapidly.
I was working security for an insurance adjuster and her team. Two theories held out. The entire thing was an insurance scam by the ship's owners as they had much higher quality insurance whilst under the Royal Navy contract... or, the abandonment was genuine due to the gas leak, but that pirates or scavengers took the ship at high tide and sailed it towards north African waters to be either scrapped or used as bait for an ambush. When our ship, a naval destroyer, turned up... They scuttled the ship, either deliberately or due to panic. When we got on board, it was deserted except for the royal marines.
The other was a cargo ship called the Gato Negra. That was in the Philippines in the aftermath of the Christmas Tsunami in the early 2000's. It had been abandoned due to cargo coming loose and threatening to capsize the ship. After the crew were gone, the cargo mostly fell either off the side or down to the base of the hold. The ship drifted for eight days. We went to evaluate it but local authorities wouldn't let our team on board. I never found out for certain why, but the team suspected that the local authorities were covertly looting cargo left aboard before claiming it was lost to the sea. Still, we won't going to push the subject given they had a military vessel with machine guns and we had a privately hired boat with some fishing rods and a flare pistol.
