This was worlds different from Sarah Bernhardt, who literally broke her leg in order to get into character for a play performance. That's where the expression comes from.
Remember this? A performance that has passed into Covent Garden legend: In July 2009, American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato slipped during the opening night performance of The Royal Opera's Il barbiere di Siviglia, breaking her leg. Not only did she finish her performance as Rosina that evening, but also went on to perform in every scheduled performance of the run, singing from a wheelchair. #music #opera #london
Impresionante! eso es ser una gran profesional, no importa lo que te depare el destino, ella sigue a delante. Grandísima mezzo y grandisima profesional, brava!!
What a story! How inspiring for Joyce to create something so great and find so many positives out of what must have been initially absolutely devastating. Bravo!
this is just amazing... like i already knew how legendary Joyce is but this just proves undeniably how professional and committed she is to her art! brava!
That is an AMAZING story! Fantastic that Joyce and the rest of the company rose to the challenge. Also impressive that she was able to perform so well in spite of the pain she must have had during the first week or two.
Joyce is extremely fortunate. I broke my left fibula about 4 inches above the ankle joint. I taught the last 11/2 months of kindergarten with the broken leg. It took two doctors three months to finally figure out it was indeed broken and then I was the one that pointed out the break on the x-ray. Good thing my GP had given me an aircast to wear.
i think this amazing. can you imagine how many people who live their lives in wheelchairs you have inspired? people who are differently abled are constantly told "you can't do that because you are in a wheelchair". You showed them that yes you can do anything - such as singing the lead in a mozart opera! kudos joyce!
Just broke my ankle and tibula 3 weeks ago stepping off of a curb. Thought I had sprung it too. 4-6 weeks in a boot and its very hard to not put weight on it. But I get to stay home.
My school performance gave my part away because I had foot surgery. No imagination. I was mobile by the time the show was opening and didn’t even need a crutch. More people with disabilities should be on stage- temporary or otherwise
I actually bought a Metropolitan Opera production of this opera last night which I love. But, as someone with a disability who has spent time in a wheelchair, I actually think I may look into buying this production. I’m interested in seeing how she manages the whole show
"Break a leg."
"I will!"
*breaks leg on stage*
디집어져
At least she got into the...cast.
BOOOOO!!

Great moment in history, right there.
Love Joyce DiDonato!!!
Keine interesse armenian scheiße.. Toto cutun'yo.
Commitment to her art!. Wish I'd known who she is back then, Likely I would have Enjoyed this Musical/Play.
As they say the show must go on even with a broken leg bless her for doing it in a wheelchair
Joyce is a wonderful, wonderful artist. So talented and generous.
What an inspiration this could be for a singer/performer who has a handicap or disability!!
Great artist, great trooper, great person! Love her!
Wow! I have so much respect for this woman! What an inspiration she is!!!!
I was there. The singing was luminous and magnificent. What a girl, what a singer.
You are remarkable in every way, Joyce! Thank you for your artistry and heart.
Blessings on your continued success!
She is extraordinarily person and singer. Thanks a lot for posting this video
She’s great, for sure, but I don’t worship her, I admire, affection & respect her. She isn’t God, after all.
Crazzy Lady ...I love Joyce Didonato , one of the best opera singers
Crazy Lady, indeed!

Well, she doesn’t say so. Brava for her performance, in any case!
“And then I was whisked to the emergency room” casual 😂
Love her!❤️
This just shows that there's no reason a person with a disability cannot sing opera. Opera is accessible. I love this
this is just amazing... like i already knew how legendary Joyce is but this just proves undeniably how professional and committed she is to her art! brava!
It was such a bliss to hear Joyce Di Donato in this video, it made my day. Thanks!
Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!
Amazing! just amazing!

That's why you never say "good luck" when they go on stage. You say...
lmao

She is extraordinary to accomplish all of this, wow, a true artist
Amaaaaaaazing!!!!!!
What a brave soprano!!!
she is a mezzo. :)
I am sorry. Isee I was wrong. EXcuse me.
Thanks.
Makes me remember when Simon Keenlyside sang all the second act of The Magic Flute with a broken hand...
Kudos to her for sticking to it and finding ways to work with her injury instead of forcing them to cancel the show.
"Forcing" is a little extreme
Lmao they would have never cancelled, they probably had an understudy.
she's amazing!!!!!
wonderful talent

What a great insight into possibly every performer’s worst nightmare!
Maravilhosa! 👏👏
Legendary solution.
Coudn't they find some sock or something similar to one which was used in that epoque?
show must go on haha
An odd comparison, perhaps, but Axl Rose had to do the same thing singing for AC/DC after he broke his leg. Performed in a wheelchair.
What year was this interview from?.
Interessante
i think somebody could act with her singing
What the hell has happened to understudies?
This makes for a much better story.
And after all, what is theatre (including opera) all about, if not telling a story?
I'd really like to know too.
wow broken leg or arm
You know the understudy was PISSED
no understudy?
