For artists looking to get into look development work, I think you can learn a lot from this video. If you're gonna end up painting over so much of the initial model, you probably could spend half the time on modeling all the little details and wrinkles and started with a base skeleton model. Luckily you didn't spend too much time with the polypaint/texturing because you ended up covering half of it up with paint strokes and photo textures. As a client, I'd rather see more time spent on iterations of what this character could look like in loose illustration/paint form (like do his teeth glow? what if fire came from his cheek slits? or nose hole?) instead of one halfway rendered character.

Flipped normals has some good tutorials as starting points, just gotta get your hands on whatever 3D program you want and start messing around! If you slow down his videos you can see a bit more of what he's actually doing as well.
