    The version where you reach around your opponent with your arms under your legs used to be a lot more popular in BJJ. But then there was a tournament where it caused the top guy to vomit all over the bottom guy. It was even worse because with his arms wrapped around his opponent's torso there was nothing to deflect the vomit from hitting his face/mouth. The video made the rounds on the internet and people just kinda stopped doing doing it after.

    This is an instinctive technique for some people. Maintaining good posture goes a long way towards stopping it. ...The canopener usually works great as a counter I have found. Thanks for the video 🎉

    Afaik, the actual reason for Do Jime's prohibition was that it damages the kidneys even before it starts to hurt. And, when the technique is pulled fast, that damage to the kidneys can easily become crippling, or even deadly. Additional risks come from a sloppy execution (leg-scissor not below, but ontop of the lower/floating rips) that can easily lead to fractures, and even to punctured organs.

    I landed this on a friend in my catch wrestling club twice my size and got a tap. I was really surprised, I was just trying to control him in guard and thought "that worked on you of all people?!"
    I guess because he had more room between his ribs and flanks it was easier to dig the knees in.

    Most useful adjustment to a sport grappling guard so it can become more useful for self-defense. The floating ribs are weak for everyone.

    Tbh this might become a thing later on in competitive jiu jitsu. The mothers milk submission has similar mechanics in terms of it's diaphragm compression. Mechanically, they are similar.

    Ashi-garami is literally in the 101 of BJJ. In gi, it is considered reaping if the foot is placed (even by the uke) over the center line, but even so, it is one of the first things learned.

  • @moonrunrs
    @moonrunrs 4 місяці тому +2

    Do Jime may work if Uke doesn't resist whatsoever and just takes it until the technique hurts. But any beginner guard passing technique will negate it quickly. I've been doing BJJ since 1998 when the tight closed guard was the bread and butter. I've never felt the need to tap or felt threatened by it.

    Robert W Smith wrote about dojime in ‘The Way of the Warrior’ which was his follow up to ‘Secret Fighting Arts of the World’. He relates a story (assumed to be fiction) about a lady judo fighter who uses dojime to thwart a would be rapist. It’s presented in the book as an outlawed and mostly forgotten technique, albeit a highly effective one if you know how to apply it.

      Wow. Not trolling. But this is how martial ars legends are created. Maybe I'm missing some heavy sarcastic humor here. Its bread and butter in brasilian jiu jitsu, and is used as a stalling neutral guaed to defend and to set up an attack like arms bars, leg triangle chokes, cross collar choke, sweep reversals. But never a submission in itself! Unless you are a grown adult attacking a 13 year old. C'mon guys and gals. If you think u can submit a grown man with this you are dreaming. Join a bjj gym and find out.

      The classic escape would be the (also (nowadays) banned in competition) Daki Age - grab the opponent's lapels, lift him up while standing up yourself, slam him into the mat as hard as you can (to sum it's pattern up - before it was banned completely, it used to be a full point (Ippon) in the very moment Uke was held in mid-air, prior to the actual execution).

    Also about the rib crush, not thinking this is an actual move, people refuse to tap and end up getting injured from this.
    This was done in a James Bond movie before lol.
    A real way to demo this is to have the person on all 4s and then stand over them with your legs around their ribs. Squat and put your heels together like a ballerina and then slowly stand/straiten your legs.

    Know your tachi-waza people. Ne-waza or ground grappling is amazing but I no longer recommend ground fighting outside of sport. Yes grappling allows you to control your opponents but they could still injure or maim you for life even if you defeat them. Stay safe and train hard everybody😊

    • @theunknownatheist3815
      @theunknownatheist3815 4 місяці тому +1

      Going to the ground intentionally is not a good idea- but you need to train newaza for when you END UP THERE either accidentally or against your will.
      And forget this “just don’t let them take you down” BS. 🙄 Sure, train to avoid or stuff takedowns, but you can’t guarantee it will always work. A good high school wrestler could be a real handful to deal with even.

    It may do jimi it doesn't work all the time.....it uses muscular strength not like a tendon strength. I knew this from a young age It can not be applied for long periods of time like any sikako with the appropriate tendon lock. You will not see success with this technique in advanced grappling. Not intermediate, Not beginner but Advanced do jimi will not work the leg muscles exhausted before the initial tap. This is strategies for advanced when the opponent try shimiwaza and it is just a little off a inch off or blocked with a little space the muscle stamina will exhausted if the position is not achieved, resulting in diminished cardio vascular system and diminished muscular system. There is a activity that allows this technique and but after finding out the actual mechanics of the technique it doesn't work at black belt brown belt level newaza randori. IE: NAGA, IBJJF, Sub Only, WNO, Grappling Industrys, Kosen Judo and of course ADCC..... If somebody has no frame of reference for grappling and looks at a technique for five minutes or a few minutes a week a short time or very little then they may have difficulty understand what actually goes on the spacific details. Especially when it comes to position with high contact that look unique to the beginner. The position of do jimi is a foundational position for many shimiwaza's as proven and other techniques. Kani basami also was allowed for many years before 20 years and is a entry for ashi goruma and sikakos in sambo and advanced grappling. There was never a problem with Kani Basami the first twenty years of grappling....... If you understand the basic body mechanics and the injury of Kani basami then the nitappu can be just as bad as the knee is blocked out very similar to Kani basami but more precise because the hands are involved and more coordinate then the legs usually. As in all contact activities the cardio vascular system, the muscular system and central nerva system all need to be warmed up properly to prevent injury and insure proper reaction and best reaction.
