"Heliotrope Bouquet" by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin Arrangement by Spencer Doidge from the book "Fingerpicking Joplin". Martin 000-17s; mahogany construction
You do Joplin justice. I'm learning this piece on the piano, and I've never thought of it being played on the guitar. It sounds so mellow and flows so organically. I love it. I guess it goes to show that being able to hit more notes at the same time doesn't make an instrument more sophisticated. Thank you for posting!
Your guitar has a beautiful soft, full sound. I love the tempo at which you play....so sweet, soothing and comforting, not to mention your amazing skill. Thank you.
This is slightly cut down, the best version is featured in the 1927 silent Jewish Prudence (sometimes just called Prudence), which is here on UA-cam somewhere. That is where i first heard this, so to me thats the one, but this is still fantastic.
very good! i've been planning on playing this tune on my ukulele for years, just so that i can say "next tune is heliotrope bouquet." greatest song title ever. and after seeing you play i will finally do it! thanks!
Wow! Beautifully played. It's a pleasure to hear someone who really gets and clearly enjoys this genre of music. Thank-you so very much for posting. Can you also play Pineapple rag? Thanks again.
Wonderful rendition.... Mike Currao taught me this on Tenor banjo..It was he who sent me the link to this video to see just how great it is....I love playing it and wish I could play it as well....
Really nice. I have Doidge's book and you seem to have economized some of his transcriptions. E.g. he has the first chord up around the 7th fret. You've put it down at the 2nd fret which makes the move to the next chord much easier. I hope to learn to play this arrangement as well as you do! Thanks, John
Truly exquisite playing. I love the gentle swing you give it. Strange the 'how many fingers' comment, I dont take it like that, it not flash at all. Like all the best guitarists you make it look so easy.
Hey! Wait a minute! Smoke On The Water?! I'm confused! I don't remember putting that in. I'll have to check my manuscripts. You're playing it close to the same tempo I did. I did the intro like a ballad, then went into tempo similar to yours. This tune was ahead of its time. It's good Broadway jazz, but that didn't come for another 30-40 years. --SD
;) sheepish grin. Not sure what I was doing there either. Just being perverse, most likely. But anyhow, glad you dropped by and watched my versions of your arrangements.
I'm learning a few rags at mo-inc Maple leaf,Entertainer and Heliotrope arr Doidge and Delta Rag n Al's Slow Rag by Jaffe. It's quite hard work but very rewarding.I am much inspires by your playing.I'm trying to get Lolax's book as I really enjoy Weeping Willow Rag but prices on net are extortionate
I have learned almost whole song just buy watching your video the only problem is sequence between 045-052 sec....is there online any notation/tablature for this particular arrangement since this is the only one in the key of B, most of the online stuff is key of A ?
Sounds Great!!! Just learning it now... One question did you notice there are some errors in the notation vs tab for this piece? I can read, but was just wondering. Anyway great job!!!
Allan Jaffe has a ragtime book with this song, but I'm more a fan of Scott's Sunburst rag, and a bunch of Joseph Lamb rags. I like Topliner rag, American beauty, and Ragtime Nightengale. I should post a video. I'm working on it.
Well played.I have the same book and am attempting to master a few of the pieces inc. this one. How long does it take you to learn a piece like this. By the way do you play any of Alan Jaffe's ragtime book pieces.I would like to hear you play the two self composed pieces from the book
thanks. this was so long ago I forget how long it took me. if i picked up the book again and tried an all new piece...probably would take a good 3 weeks off and on before I had it all stuffed into memory. and that's playing it at least an hour a day. slow learner... :) I tried to learn "Gladiolus Rag" and never got to a point of having it all down. I don't know Al Jaffe. I'll have to look him up. cheers.
Check into a recording company called "kicking mule".. Phenomenal finger pickers and tab books to accompany them. This song is on one, but in a different key.

Wonderful rendition. I really like the slightly modified ragtime tempo with the swing feel. I play the same tune on Tenor Banjo in a traditional ragtime tempo of 140. Check out my UA-cam Video of The Calliope Rag....
You don't allow your videos to be embed in external websites, too bad. I don't understand why you did that after I embedded some of your videos in my website, but let it be that way.. not cool.
This remains the best rendition on UA-cam. Inspirational to those of us who struggle through every new piece.
It is inspirational, but extremely frustrating watching this guy play chords that dont seem to exist on my guitar
You dance up and down those strings like a Black Widow on a Web.
Very well done!
Thanks.

shadowfox544 im learning it on piano too , im suprised how this piece can be played that good on guitar
Let it also be noted that he does Chauvin justice as well...
This is absolutely brilliant I really want to be able to play this as well. Loved the ironic Smoke on the Water intro.
BEAUTIFUL~!! The Heliotrope is meant to be played slowly,
--softly and sultry and sensual. Well done here.
Excellent job on a very nice guitar!
Your guitar has a beautiful soft, full sound. I love the tempo at which you play....so sweet, soothing and comforting, not to mention your amazing skill.
Thank you.
I Love this song! I was learning this a while back I think i'll dig it out again! Thank's.
I've been playing guitar for 14 years.. Dude you are a fantastic player!

Still one of my favorites you've ever posted!
this is the most underrated version of this song

Nice. Great to hear some guitar ragtime. Of course, Scott Joplin only wrote the final two strains of this. The first two were by Louis Chauvin.
One word. FABULOUS!!
Fantastic playing and very smooth tone! I might check this arrangement book.
Wonderful rendition.... Mike Currao taught me this on Tenor banjo..It was he who sent me the link to this video to see just how great it is....I love playing it and wish I could play it as well....
you should. thanks for watching. watch my other ragtime things (i have a "joplin" playlist, check it out)
Bravo!!
Gorgeous playing. Lovely mahagony guitar. I'm struggling just to learn "Mple Leaf" from Doidge's book.
Sounds great!!
Bravo!

Amazing job! I am endeavoring to learn this myself, but I'm terrible at reading sheet music. :(
Sounds beautiful! Where can I get the music?
