    I find it very satisfying to read comments from youngsters here who are seeing this guy for the first time and appreciate how awesome he was. I was fortunate to grow up watching him (I'm 63 now), and while there are still many youngsters who can't accept his greatness at least they've finally gotten to see him. Maybe in time they'll all appreciate what he could do, but even if they don't, in 20 years some kid will be bad-mouthing their icons too like many of the youngsters are bad-mouthing ours today.

      You sir belong to same generation as my father, but I believe that Wilt was the greatest bball player ever and probably greatest athlete ever recorded. And I saw like 10 hours of his footages, bar documentary movies.
      Greatness isn't measured by time when or place where someone lived, but with achievements someone did.

    • @buckfan1969
      @buckfan1969 10 років тому +9

      CalcioEUnico I agree with you on the measure of greatness. Some say the level of competition was inferior, or whatever. But all anyone can do is be the best of their time, and Chamberlain was certainly that. And I've never seen anyone dominate the game like he did. It's not even close. Russell might dominate on defense, or Oscar on offense, but nobody; not Jordan, not Kobe, not Kareem: nobody dominated at both ends like the Dipper did. Ever.

    • @buckfan1969
      @buckfan1969 10 років тому +5

      baroh2413 I don't think it's a matter of people forgetting them; those who saw them remember. The problem is that the majority of people, particularly those who access UA-cam, never saw them play. They're too young to have seen them. It's the same with Oscar Robertson, my personal favorite. All they've seen are the few grainy clips available here, which don't do them justice. Baylor was Doctor J before Julius came along. The Big O was, imho, the best point guard ever. And Barry was maybe the best pure shooter ever. We oldtimers remember them, but we're a dying breed. Someday it will be the same with MJ, and 20 years after that, with Lebron. Such is life.

    A nice quote:D
    "I call Wilt Chamberlain a very honest workman. By that, I mean he always did what his employer wanted. No star athlete has ever given his boss more for the money than Wilt did during his career. Eddie Gottlieb [owner of the Warriors] wanted Wilt to score like no man ever had, so Wilt did. [Alex] Hannum and some of his other coaches wantedhim to pass and play defense, so he did that and he played 48 minutes a night. Those who criticized Wilt -- first for his scoring, then for not scoring more -- really should have criticized his employer."

    Walt Bellamy had 32 pts and 19 rebs/game in his first season. But in his first game against Chamberlain Bellamy was scoreless after first half with his 9 shots blocked by Wilt. At the end of the game Chamberlain had 51 point, Bellamy 14.
    Jordan scored 50 or more points 31 times in his career. Think that's the best of all-time? Chamberlain scored 50 or more points 45 times in one season! That season Chamberlain AVERAGED 50 points (50.4) per game (along with 26 rebounds per game!)!
    Wilt Chamberlain would have eaten Mikan, Olajuwon, O'Neal, Robinson, Ewing, Karl Malone, Moses Malone, Barkley, Rodman, Duncan, Garnett, Jordan, Bird, Magic, Bryant, Durant, James and everyone else alive. He is absolutely the greatest, the strongest and the most dominant basketball player of all-time, only blind and ignorant don't see that.

Today's players and players from 80's on are braking foundamental rules all the time. Traveling, palming and carrying is allowed today, which makes ball handling infinitely easier. Wilt would destroy today's league. He would be unstoppable. Absolutely unstoppable. DeAndre Jordan is a physical freak today, well, it doesn't get freakier than young Wilt.

      You are an infant. There were 3 sec rules in offence. The defensive rules suck now. And nobody would be able to stop Wilt. Back then the paint was clogged and players had to shoot more. And not get rewarded 3 points for making open shots. There was goaltending. On both ends. Wilt wasn't protected by reffs, he was hated by them. Players were allowed to abuse him. Wilt was insanely coordinated, with the loose ballhandling rules of today nobody could stop him. Hell he wouldn't even have to dribble the ball now that they allow million steps. Wilt would get anywhere he wanted with his long legs with 3 let alone 5 steps. Also Wilt would feed on players trying to drive. There was a reason players didn't want to drive when Wilt, Russell and Thurmond were guarding the rim. Also. The seasons were brutal. 8 teams, most of them stacked with the best players in the world. Fucking playoffs all season long. The games were played in harsher conditions, travel was infinitely harder, and the players actually played big minutes. Wilt's stamina and toughness was unparallel. Let alone everything else.

    I vividly remember watching Wilt when I was a youngster and a young man. He was absolutely the most dominant player to walk onto a court. MJ, LeBron, Kobe, Bird, Magic, Shaq, Hakeem, Kareem, they all came way after Wilt (well Kareem was long after Wilt's prime, anyway). I am a huge Celtic fan and I always thought in my mind that Russell had it all over Chamberlain and I wondered why Wilt couldn't win as many titles. Russell was incredible, make no mistake, an athlete way ahead of his time. He once jumped over a dude the way Vince Carter did three and a half decades later except Russell just laid it in softly... but I digress, Chamberlain was a beast and though much of his early one on one competition wasn't nearly the size he was, he was tested by collapsing defenses, guys getting as physical with him like players did later in the 80's when the Celtics and Lakers clotheslined each other for the fun of it. Chamberlain was the best player I ever saw. Mikan was before me, but I see film of him and kind of laugh. Chamberlain was the first big superstar that came out of high school and college with a roar (though his heavily favored college team lost in the NCAA tourney final his sophomore year). He was brilliant to watch. Really without a weakness that he didn't correct -- except shooting foul shots. He developed a fade away jumper later in his career when he was tired of stuffing the ball and players through the hoop. I have loved watching all of the great ones play, but this guy was the best. He just never had as many great players on his teams in a prolonged way. The '67 76er's were stacked with great players, and the Lakers were even more so loaded in '72. If there is any rub at all, it is that those Laker's teams, with an aging Chamberlain, should have won one, maybe two more titles. But really he played a career with less stars around him and with my Celtics with so many HOFers running up and down the floor like madmen. When he had West, Goodrich, Hairston and the like, he won. He will always be the greatest force in NBA history to me.

      Indeed, you see how Lebron is like a bully with his size and athleticism? Imagine how much of a bully Wilt would be today, especially if his coach asked him to play using his power to dominate. He played more like a finesse player back then, learning to shoot fadeaways and so on, because back before Wilt came to the league there was a stigma about big/tall guys just being big brutes who couldn't actually play, so Wilt wanted to prove them wrong and show he could do anything that even the smaller guys could do. When he did assert his power back then, he was even more unstoppable.

Wilt Chamberlain was the most physically gifted athlete of all time and he would obliterate the competition of today. The defense was hard as shit back then and apparently shit can be pretty fucking hard. The defense is smarter today because as time progresses there is bound to be revolution and shit, I mean we aren't cave mans and hunting dinosaurs and shit anymore. Wilt was a Goliath and he was Superman, man. He was 7'1 without shoes, and about 7'3 with them. He was extremely fast and agile for his height. Oh yeah, most "great centers" of the past 20 years are not even seven footers, they are 6'11, etc without shoes. Wilt was bigger, stronger, faster, and more capable. His coordination was off the charts. Don't even get me started on the 100 point game, the 55 rebounds, and 50 points per game season. Put him into today's soft league, and he would kill your favorite bandwagon wannabe MVP Stephen curry. Wilt was Superman. Look up, "Wilt Chamberlain, a real superman" case closed, goodnight

      Let's use the long jump record as an example. Bob Beaman jumped 29 feet 2 in during the Mexico Olympics. This record stood for over 30 years. He did this without modern sports medicine. Only a small few have come close to long jumping 29 feet. If Beaman had today's training techniques he would be jumping farther. Wilt chamberlain was a natural athlete who high jumped 6 ft 7 inches in college, ran the 440 and long jumped. He played for the Harlem globetrotters before playing in the nba, he challenged Ali to a fight which didn't take place because of Ali s legal problems with the government. After leaving the nba, he played professional volleyball. If he had access to modern training methods he would still be a dominant force. He is in the same category as a jim brown who were natural athletes and who could play in any era. The argument that he played against smaller opponents is laughable because you could say Shaquille O'Neil was dominant because he was much bigger than his opponents. There are a few athletes who could play in any era because of their natural talent. Michael Jordan, wayne Gretzky , are part of that club.

    I appreciate this video and it demonstrates how ignorant we are not knowing our history.
    The stories about Wilt and watching the film are unreal. He was a FREAK. The most athletically gifted basketball player we've ever seen. To be that Big, fast and Strong is incredible. To play a full 48 mins in 78 games is just wow! Imagine Shaq in elite shape and playing great defense.
    Wilt would dominate any era of basketball. If I'm starting a team all-time, I'm taking Wilt #1

    I grew up watching Wilt on TV every time his team was on. He was spellbinding. Too bad TV back then in the boondocks where we lived was so fickle. There were games when the best tuning we could arrange was a slow, upward scroll, with a trapezoidal frame. And it was worth it to see him!
