History of the Thomas Macy House, 99 Main Street, Nantucket

In this presentation, explore the history of the Thomas Macy House, located at 99 Main Street, Nantucket.
Built around 1800 by Valentine Swain as a typical three-bay house, the house passed to Thomas Macy during the prosperity of Nantucket’s whaling days. Macy enlarged the house, embellishing it with Federal ornamentation, and it stayed in his family for generations. In the twentieth century, Jacqueline Harris and her family owned the house for decades before donating it to the Nantucket Historical Association.

My grandmother was a Macy and she always said that all the Macy’s in the the US were related.

I am also a relation but I don't think this Thomas Macy may not be my branch although I do have a Thomas Macy's in my lineage around that time. The Thomas Macy (my 6th great grandfather) around this timeframe was one married to Anna and was the son of Paul and Bethiah Macy. Love all this history that I can really get into because it is my history. Original settler Thomas Macy and Tristram Coffin were my 11th great grandfathers so that is also a name I am related too. Love it!

I'm related to all these people. The closest instance in my tree where my ancestor was born on Nantucket was Reuben Beard born in 1763. His father, Richard Beard was believed to have been born there in 1718. He married Eunice Macy born in 1721. It's likely that Reuben Beard knew Thomas Macy born in 1787.

Thomas Macy's first wife Elisa had a son Rowland who was the founders of the Macy's Store. My fourth great grandfather Thomas Barnard married Elisa and was Rowlands stepfather. My grandfather Robert Newcomb Barnard was the first not born in Nantucket but was born in Gloucester MA.
